A well-known rider, coach, trainer and judge, Phyllis built her professionalcareer in her beloved Virginia.Graduating from UCLA in 1971 with a degree in Political Theory, Phyllisimmediately turned to the horse show world with passion. Her success, ridingwith Marcia Williams in Pasadena,CA, launched her promising professionalbusiness in New York and Virginia. Dedicated to the thoroughbred hunter, sheand her students won frequently on the “A” circuit throughout the mid-Atlanticand in Florida and California in the 80’s and 90’s. As she wound down hershowing, she worked with many of the top riders in the area. Several of herstudents and riders are now successful professionals in their own right. Shecapped her career as a well-respected “R” judge until her retirement in 2013.Phyllis is survived by her husband of 44 years, Bill Farland, and their latest in a30 year line of standard schnauzers, Leo, who live in their homes in Rockport, Maine and LaQuinta, California.Phyllis was the consummate horse-woman, dedicated to her sport and her animals.
