Welcome to Spring!
We have continued to have a tremendously strong surgical case volume. The demand for care by our faculty and staff is as strong as it has ever been,
and I have been very proud of how you have continued your focus on excellence. This past week I had an opportunity to round in the Holding
Rooms and Operating Rooms with a focus on our universal protocol processes. What I observed was an impressive focus on patient safety and
keeping the patient at the center of what you do.
As we have continued to grow in our volumes, the stresses on our support systems of instru-
ment management and Environmental Services has also increased. We have had an intention-
al focus on these support services and have engaged a team to help identify where we need
to increase our resources for the instrument processing teams and environmental services
teams. This is an exciting opportunity for us to tighten up our processes across the board –
we will be discussing more with staff soon on some measures being taken to improve these
resources. I want to thank those of you who are diligently using Censitrac to provide feed-
back on any variances you encounter. This has helped us in a significant manner to identify
issues and act to resolve them.
April is also bringing to us an amazing event – the AORN Expo. This is followed by ASPAN
in the first of May. We are planning to send as many staff as possible due to these important
meetings being held in our back yard. I am very excited about the impact your attendance to
these conferences will have on practice in our perioperative enterprise.
I am proud of the care you provide to our patients, I am proud of how every one of you rep-
resent us in our community. Thank you for your dedication to excellence.

Cyndi was getting a patient ready for surgery, the pt needed to have surgery on the Right hand. The signed and scanned consent in epic, stated the left hand. It was plainly evident the left hand had NO INJURY. Cyndi picked up on this mistake and quickly called the surgical team to come to the bedside in the PACU to redo a consent for surgery for the correct hand. I know this sounds like a minor catch but this is something we as Nurses do daily to keep our patients safe.
