Stretching the TruthWeve all heard the saying, Liar, liar, pants on fire. Lying is never a good idea, especially when it comes t
applying for jobs. You may feel that it is not morally wrong to lie, or that a little white lie is not that bad. Howeveno matter how you try to color code it, a lie is a lie. If you are one who has a tendency to embellish your resum
or application to paint yourself to be someone you are not, well then, need anymore be said? If you see a job thseems to be perfect for you, but in the job description, there may be one thing that you havent done before, you ma
still have the opportunity to apply for the position. For example, you first want to assess your skills. You may havrelated skills that may transfer to the skills required. List those skills and how you acquired them. Then write
cover letter that shows your potential in performing the job that has been advertised. The worst that will happen that your resume/application will end up in the circular file. The best that can happen would be that the prospectiv
employer will see the potential in you and decide that experience isnt as important as initiative. But dont lie. Lie
have a way of snowballing. Like Lays Potato chips, you cant just stop with one.

Ways to Improve Your JobSearch
1. Always have alternatives. If jobs are scarce in your usual line ofwork, look in other industries, other towns, or examine otherskills you can market.
2. Have multiple target employers. Don't spend all your efforts onjust a few.
3. Consider other forms of work: self-employment, part-time, etc.4. Spend more time on your job search. The average seeker spends
just five hours per week. Treat looking for work as a full-time
job.5. Concentrate on small companies, those with 100 or feweremployees, who are creating two out of three new jobs since
1970.
6. See at least two employers per day. The average job seekervisits just six per month.
7. Don't be put off by rejection. If the employer has no vacancies, ask if they know of anyone who has.
8. Be prepared to "toot your horn" by being able to tell employerswhat makes you stand out above others.
9. Use a number of job search methods. The average job seekeruses just 1.6 methods. The more fires you have burning, the
quicker your search will be successful.
10. Find or create a support group for yourself. Check the localEmployment Security Commission for Job Clubs, which arehighly effective. Or buddy with someone else who is looking forwork. Or enlist a friend or family member to give support
and/or a kick in the rear to keep you focused and working at
your job search. Bottom line--nothing is lonelier than a solitary
job search. Be kind to yourself--you deserve support.
11. Be prepared, mentally and financially, for a long job-hunt. One job-hunter in three gives up too soon. Remember--gentle,
loving, stubborn persistence is the name of the game.
