Comedy, Tragedy, Satire The Ancient Greeks invented three types
of plays: tragedies (sad ending), comedies (happy ending) and
satires (made fun at real people and events). All the actors were
men or boys. Thespis was one of the most famous and successful
actors in all of Ancient Greece. In his honor, actors today are
called thespians. Famous playwrights: Aeschylus, Sophocles and
Euripides (tragedy) and Aristophanes (comedy). AGUS

Masks and Costumes Actors used masks, wigs, platform boots to
make them look taller and padded costumes to make them look fatter
or stronger. The actors costumes had to show clearly who was who.
The masks had very exaggerated expressions so the audience could
see them from a distance. The masks were made of stiffened fabric
or cork and then painted. Happy characters dressed brightly, and
tragic ones wore dark clothes. AGUS

AMPHITHEATRE The amphitheatres were open-air and built in a
semi- circular shape on a hillside. The shape of the theatres gave
everyone in the audience excellent viewing. Greek theatres had
great acoustics by design. The Dionysus theatre in Athens, is the
oldest theatre in Ancient Greece. One of the best preserved Greek
theatres is at Epidaurus. AGUS
