Warm up: May 7, 2012New paper please…Describe our “Star”1) Its name2) What it is made of3) What it provides to life on Earth
Core Learning GoalThe student will be able to explain the physical behavior of the environment, Earth, and the universe.
Today’s Objectives:
Students will be able to…
List and describe the outer parts of the sun.
Plot the cycle of sunspots and determine the pattern from data given
The SunParts of the Sun Photosphere – is the bright visible
surface of the sun (6000°C)
The SunGranules – light and dark areas of
photosphere: when magnified looks like sand grains
(results from Hot gases rising and cooler gasses sinking)
The SunSunspots – large dark cooler gas
regions on the photosphere.

The SunSunspots are caused by magnetic
effects resulting from the equator of the sun rotating faster than the poles.
The SunSunspot cycle – increases and
decreases on a __11__ year cycle.Average sunspot is about the size of
the earth.
The SunGalileo was first to observe
sunspots and went blind because of the sun’s harmful radiation waves.
The SunChromosphere – reddish layer above
the photosphere (color layer).
The SunCorona – The outer most layer of the
sun (2 million °C) can only be seen during a solar eclipse.
Time to plot the:Sunspot cycle
