THE HEART: The heart is the central organ of the circulatory
system. Its function is to pump blood around the body Every time
the heart beats, it pushes blood through the blood vessels of the
circulatory system.

THE PARTS OF THE HEART: The heart is separated into two sides
right and left The two halves are separated by the septum. Septum =
a wall of tissue that separates the sides of the heart and keeps
the oxygen-rich blood from mixing with the oxygen-poor blood Each
side of the heart is also separated into two compartments. Top of
each side = atrium Receives blood that comes into the heart Lower
chamber of each side= ventricle pumps blood out of the heart Valve
= flap of tissue that separates the atrium from the ventricle and
prevents blood from flowing backwards and also between ventricles
and blood vessels
FAST FACTS! The average heartbeat is 72 times per minute. In
the course of one day it beats over 100,000 times. In one year the
heart beats almost 38 million times, and by the time you are 70
years old, on average, it's made it to 2.5 billion beats.
