A gap year: Helping hands

It was on a Saturday morning in December during the Christmas break when we arrived at Devil’s Rock. First we set up camp so we could get a good night’s sleep to prepare for the next day’s caving adventure. Secondly we made sure we had some waterproof clothes.

At ten in the morning the next day, we entered the cave. After a few hours we stopped to eat something. As I pulled a sandwich out of my backpack and took a bite, a horrible scream echoed through the cave!

Looking down, I saw a horrible sight; Liz was fl oating face down in the black, icy water. I jumped in and pulled Liz out of the water. Although Liz’s face was grey, she was still alive. This was probably because her broken helmet stayed on her head after she fell. Working quickly, I tied her to the rope and told the others to pull her up. When we arrived at the top somebody put a blanket round her. Although Liz was feeling terrible she had a smile on her face. A single tear ran down her cheek as she saw me, so I reached out and squeezed her hand, and told her everything would be alright.

GUIDE TO THE CAVE

Spring is the best time of year to go, but take some warm clothes with you because it’s cold inside the cave, and make sure to take food and water. When you arrive at Death Valley, fi rst go to Devil’s Rock at the end of Forest Road; everybody knows where it is, so just ask. Secondly go along the small path past the rock. Then go another 50 metres. That will take you to a group of rocks surrounding a big hole. Climb down the hole and turn left to enter the cave. Finally, when you’re inside the cave, walk

carefully and use your headlamp because it’s easy to trip and fall. You’ll be amazed by the beautiful underground rivers and strange rock formations.
