The Neighbors in Need Fund was established to provide

financial assistance NOW to those residents of Warm Hearth Village who are unable to afford the full cost of their housing and care.

The Benevolence Endowment focuses on FUTURE needs of residents at the Village. The Endowment was established in 2003 by Village residents who wanted to ensure the Warm Hearth Foundation could provide financial assistance to those in need well into the future.

Our tradition of caring, and our mission to enrich the lives of all residents makes the Benevolence Endowment an imperative in

order to meet future needs.

Lights of Love

The Annual Lights of Love Ceremony was held in December 2014. The illumination ceremony is beautiful and inspiring as candles are lit in celebration and remembrance of family and friends. This year’s ceremony recognized 55 individuals.

Contributions were made through the annual Lights of Love Campaign. In addition each year those recognized with a leaf on The Giving Tree are included in the ceremony. Lights of Love is a holiday tradition at Warm Hearth Village.

On October 10, 2014, the Warm Hearth Foundation set sail on its 2nd annual tropical themed fundraiser to benefit Neighbors in Need. The evening offered the sounds of the Key West band and The PanJammers, a gourmet cheeseburger throw-down featuring Hethwood Market, Mountain Lake Lodge, Kems and The Village Gourmet, and a silent auction filled with lots of great items.

Over $24,300 was raised from sponsorships, ticket sales and silent auction purchases to benefit our Neighbors in Need Fund. The Cheeseburger in Parrotdise Event is an annual fundraising event for the Warm Hearth Foundation’s Neighbors in Need Fund. We look forward to spending time with our donors in the community at this event each year.

Grant Writing Pays Off!

The Warm Hearth Foundation finished the third quarter of 2015 by securing ten grants to support its charitable mission. Over $17,850 was received to assist with the Neighbors in Need program.

Grant funding for the Neighbors in Need program is used to provide for meals for seniors receiving charitable assistance at Showalter Center and the Kroontje Health Care Center. In addition, grant funding can be used to meet individual needs such as medical/dental emergencies, medical equipment, food/nutritional, transportation and other emergency situations. Special thanks to The Trolinger Trust, The Community Foundation of the New River Valley, The C.E. Richardson Foundation, The Sam and Marion Golden Helping Hand Foundation, The Corning Foundation, and the American Electric Power Foundation for their generous grant support!

The Warm Hearth Foundation kicked off a new tradition with the 1st Annual Parrot Strut 5K and 1 mile fun walk on Labor Day weekend. Seventy-Five runners participated in this new event to raise funds for the Neighbors in Need Fund. The Parrot Strut is a partner event with the annual Cheeseburger in Parrot-dise Fundaiser.

The 3rd Annual Cheeseburger in Parrot-dise event followed on September 25th. The event was filled with wonderful music from the Key West Band and the PanJammers. Hethwood Market took home the title in the Cheeseburger Throwdown. Many thanks to all our contestants including, The Village Gourmet, Kems, and Blue Ridge Mountain Catering for their participation.

The events raised over $26,000 for the Neighbors in Need Fund. We would like to thank everyone for making this event so much FUN and for helping us raise funds for those in need at Warm Hearth Village.

Financial Planning Seminar Series

Showalter Center Gets Renovated

During the fall of 2014, the Warm Hearth Inc. Board of Directors approved the renovation of Showalter Center. The project was extensive, revitalizing both the interior and exterior of the four story building. A capital campaign was launched to help with the costs of the project and generated $93,375 of a one million dollar budget. Thirty-nine donors stepped on board to make this project a success.

On October 6, 2015, the community witnessed the rebirth of a grand building on the Warm Hearth campus. Several hundred guests and local businesses were on hand. Many commented on the new look and function of a 30 + year building still faithfully serving the New River Valley. Many thanks to our generous donors for making Showalter Center not only serve today’s seniors but also tomorrow’s.

In 2015, we received a grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to include a Resident Service Coordinator position to benefit the residents of Trolinger House and New River House Apartments. Cindy Wiley-Lamb, hired as Resident Service Coordinator, has worked diligently to connect residents with community resources so that they are more empowered to care for themselves, participate fully in our community and enrich their personal lives through wellness and education programs. Cindy has become a trusted source and referral point for residents facing significant challenges with managing financial resources. Specifically, Cindy has generated resident cost savings totaling $52,944 to date. This is how the savings breaks down: Utilities at $23,876.12, Food $3,181.44, Health & Medical $7,636.45, Legal Assistance $5,200.00, Personal/Clothing $3,711.97, Veterans Aid $7,840.00, Other $1,499.00. Cindy has assisted residents with various programs in the community including energy assistance and SNAP benefits. In addition she works with the Warm Hearth Foundation to provide donations of food, furniture and adaptive medical equipment donated by individuals and local businesses.
