WARDEN'SWORD

WARDEN'SWORDBy Janet Hoskins, Interim Warden

April is an interesting timein academic institutions forit represents both abeginning and an ending. The beginning is obvious, and not unique to us. I seethe obvious signs of springin the grass which is

starting to turn green, new buds on the treesand folks walking comfortably along thepaths wearing only light jackets. As well, onApril 4, Christians everywhere celebratedEaster, with its message of hope andrenewal.

The ending, for us, is the end of theacademic year. Classes are over and examsare in full swing. Students are preparing toleave our classrooms and our residence, some for the summer and some forever. Ilook forward to the University of ManitobaConvocation this month when manyJohnians will receive their degrees and goout into the world to make their marks. There is some sadness in saying goodbye topeople who have been a part of our dailylives for four years but we look forward tothese same people coming back as alumni tovisit and tell us of their continuing success. Ithas been a great pleasure to have had gradsfrom as much as 75 years ago returning tocontinue their fondly rememberedassociation with their College.

We say goodbye soon to some of our fellowsas well. But, at the same time, membershipfor the upcoming year is now being decided. Our community has been greatly enriched,

not only by Senior Fellows who have spentextended periods of time at the College, butalso by Junior and Visiting Fellows whohave been completing a graduate degree orteaching on a term appointment. It is withsome considerable excitement that we lookforward to finding out who will be joiningus.

As you know, we are part of the Athletes'Village for the 13th Pan American Games inJuly when St John's will be home to 200athletes. We don’t know what exactly thiswill mean, other than the entire College willbe inside the ‘secured’ area and we are all inthe process of being accredited. Since ourChapel will be inside the Village, it (and ourChaplain) will undoubtedly have a specialcontribution to make to the spiritual life ofthe Games. Our Café and food services willbe open and available, not only for ourathlete guests, but also for receptions hostedby participating countries and for ouruniversity colleagues. This promises to be avery exciting time for Winnipeg, theUniversity of Manitoba and St John’sCollege. We are pleased to have thisopportunity to show ourselves off to theworld.

The Café Patio is near completion. There is alast bit of landscaping to be done and thepatio furniture to be put in place. We’relooking forward to a grand opening in Juneto formally thank everyone who contributedto this project and to officially launch it as anattractive part of our College grounds.

These are just a couple of the more obviousthings that are going on at the College andthey are just the tip of the iceberg. Pleaseconsider coming to visit us if you’re in ourarea. We’d love to see you!

The 17th Annual Marjorie Ward Lecture was offered by coloraturasoprano, Tracy Dahl, at the end of February. Her presentation, “TheRoad I’ve Travelled” was a finely balanced mix of performance andlecture.

Tracy Dahl is a Winnipeg artist on the international opera andconcert stage. She has been acclaimed for her performances withthe Metropolitan, the San Francisco, and Canadian Operacompanies.

Following tradition, the Marjorie Ward Lecturewas preceded by a dinner for Fellows, Staff andspecial guests and it was followed by areception for the audience of approximately170 people. THE XIII PAN AMERICAN GAMES

The University of Manitoba Campus will beone of three Winnipeg area “villages” thatwill house over 3000 athletes and teamofficials for the 1999 Pan Am Games thissummer. St John’s College is privileged tobe a participant and will house over 200athletes in the Residence from July 18th -August 10th.

The Residence rooms will be reconfigured toaccommodate double bunk beds and specialarrangements made for team administrators, trainers, coaches, and other officials. Inaddition, the north and south academicclassrooms will become administrativeoffices and meeting space for the teams.

In the past year, a lot of effort has gone intopreparing St John’s for this historic event. Agreat deal of planning through monthlyVillage Team Meetings, as well as individualwalk-throughs with local organizers andvisits by team representatives from manydifferent sports, has ensured that we willbe ready for our guests.

In the summer of 1998, St John’saccommodated a number of groups whosepurpose was to “test” venues for varioussports. We hosted over 120 athletes in earlyJuly during the Pan Pacific RhythmicGymnastics Competition held in the newInvestor’s Group Athletic Centre. Youngathletes from many Pacific Rim Countrieswere in Residence and it proved helpful forus to understand the possible challenges thatwe will face in 1999. During May and June,1998, Team Canada Volleyball Women’s andMen’s Camps were housed with us and willreturn again this May in final preparation forthe Games.

We anticipate that the Daily Bread Caféand the new outdoor patio will be popularduring the Games. While we will not befeeding the athletes in Residence webelieve these areas will be used as socialgathering places for our guests as well asour regular campus clients.

One of the very interesting challenges forall of us at St John’s will be getting to workeach day. Because all of the Collegebuildings are enclosed within the fencedvillage, everyone has to be accredited topass through security. All support staff,(we anticipate adding 10 to 14 additionalhousekeeping staff too) and facultymembers are included. It will bememorable!

NOTES FROM ALUMNI & FRIENDS

In 1955, having graduated from high schoolwith a couple of small scholarships, Iattempted to enrol in a post-secondaryinstitution. Treated with beaurocraticdisdain, I found the experience demoralizingand gave up on the idea. Soon after, however, I received a telephone call fromLaurie Wilmot, then Warden, who said StJohn’s was interested in students of mycalibre and would match my scholarships. Hearranged to meet with me and guided methrough the buildings, making me feel atease and eager to begin my studies. Andthat, as Robert Frost said, has made all thedifference.

Yours in appreciation,Judy Morton (‘59)

The Rt. Revd Terence Finlay, Bishop ofToronto, wrote recently and commented onhis long-standing relationship with theCollege: "My association with St John's datesback to kindergarten or pre-kindergartenclass which I believe was offered by theCollege. My teacher was Helen Armitagewho presently resides in Toronto…"

Happy Birthday to Dr Jack Abra whocelebrated his 90th birthday on May 1st,1999. His family had a reunion to honourthis special occasion. Jack is the widowerof Marion Smith Abra, father of JohniansJohn, Doug (‘68), and Robert, grandfatherof Katherine (‘97) and Allison (‘99).

Dear Friends,Sometime ago, I wrote to tell you that I hadterminal cancer with a short life expectancy andtherefore I would not be able to continue ourcorrespondence. As it happens, I am still alive. This is now January 31st, 1999, having fooledthe predictions of the oncologist.

However, I’m here but I am very weak. I am in ahospice and while I would like to write and I verymuch enjoy the letters I get from many of youwho write me, I can’t write anymore due tomedications… It is too much to ask [Eileen] towrite to the considerable number of friends Ihave, and tell them how I am and keep them up todate as to my condition. So, I am taping a formletter which will go to a number of friends... Weboth do appreciate the thoughtfulness of those ofyou who have written and have kept in touchwith us by other means. I cannot begin to sayhow much that means to a person who is on hisway out, to put it mildly. It’s not that I’m afraidof death, far from it, anything but afraid of death.I rather wish that my death would come soon forI do not like the weakened condition that I am in,

I do not like not being able to write, I do not likenot being able to use a fork to pick up peas forexample, I do not like the tremendous shakinessthat developed in my hands, I do not like theweakness and the fear of falling. So there aremany things that are unpleasant about the dyingprocess…

Let me say this to you, that never in my life haveI so appreciated the friends that I have, as in theselast days. I think of all they have done for me intheir letters and messages which remind me ofold memories. I am reminded of my good life thatI was able to share with them, which made mylife so interesting. It really is due to their effortsthat I have so many thanks.

Both “Hail and Farewell”, to quote thegladiators. For I sort of have a feeling that I haveone battle to fight yet, and then that will be that, for Art Hough... All my very best to you andyours.

Art Hough ('39) died on February 25th, 1999.See page 12 for obituary.
