Congratulations
Yacht Club of the Year 2005-6
“Congratulations on an excellent night Friday. I think it was a terrific opportunity to recognise everyone's achievements, particularly those
who volunteer and to a club like Albert Sailing Club, who are the essence of what VicHealth is supporting with respect to being
welcoming and inclusive.” (Shelley Maher Vic Health)
The future of yachting in Victoria
Current Position
1. Actual & “perceived” participation is middle aged, middle class, males (except juniors)
2. Anachronistic, exclusive & fragmented clubs – perception ?
3. Club membership growing with population but low overall
4. Youth & junior participation not growing
5. An “Event” State
Trends 1. Increase population
especially in coastal areas & our demographic
2. “Social” participation growing faster than competitive sailing?
3. Increased competition for youth & juniors involvement
4. Increased demands of volunteers
Comments ? Feedback ? Others ?
What needs to change ?
• Junior, youth & family participation • Accessibility of clubs
– Image & Actual – Community benefit Boating Safety & Education
• Unity of the sport • Increased support of volunteers &
“professionalism”
Go Sailing & boating
A program to increase unity in the club community and help clubs increase
participation, member performance and race management capacity
Key Ingredients
Common branding – Go Sailing & boating Sound club management structure – appropriate
plans & policies Participation programs – especially junior &
youth to attract families – training & instructors Improving sailor performance – coaches Capacity – to support major events – race
officers
A quick survey – who has ?
Current Strategic Plan Current Risk Management Plan Current Membership Protection Policies Current Inclusion policies or Sailability program Junior participation program Schools Teams Racing program YA accredited Training Centre Coaching Program Race Officer Development program – funded Adopted the Go Sailing & boating branding
“Enabling” Objectives
• Increase our capacity to deliver major events through the development of Race Officers
• Increase the performance of Victorian sailors through the development of Club & Class Coaches
• Increase participation through the development of Instructors for training of the community – increasing community access and benefit
Why ? Reason 1 = Participation
• Participation in sailing & boating at clubs is keeping up with population growth and boat registrations
• Youth Participation fell last year • Clubs are poorly utilized – we have plenty of assets in
terms of building & boats – albeit aging, but a shortage of instructors
• Clubs can be the vehicle for community boating education
Participation programs build community involvement and membership
Why ? Reason 2 = Public Benefit
• The environment is changing = clubs needs to have plans & policies that mirror the contemporary world = duty of care
• The government and public still see sailing as a traditional bastion of middle aged, middle class males ( & that’s the reality)
Clubs need to demonstrate public benefit, and contemporary approaches
Why ? Reason 3 = Results & Events
• Victoria is an “Event” based state = yachting needs to continue to deliver successful major events
• The States orientation to events means we have to substantially deliver our own athlete development programs
• Victoria can be a national centre of excellence in official training
Yachting needs a strong program of
Officials & Coaches development .
This is not a program, problem, or project for Yachting Victoria Inc – it is for yachting in Victoria – a community based solution.
Putting “unity” into the yachting Community
Go Sailing & boating program
Go Sailing & boating - A Program
Program Framework for Clubs

– Membership Protection – Inclusion – Risk Management – Participation – Volunteers
• Resources to support - http://www.ausport.gov.au/clients/clubs.asp- http://www.vis.org.au/sported_skillingvols.asp
A Strategic Plan may include Financial health Facilities & infra structure Member attraction and participation Volunteer support Community responsibilities and relationships Training of the public at an accredited centre Improved performance of sailorsSupport of major events Branding & recognition
= What your future looks like, what type of club you want to be and how you will get there

TACKERS
General Boating Safety 4 Kids
• Marine Safety Funded • Life Saving managed• YV delivered • 10,000 kids this year at clubs throughout
Victoria • Opportunity for Clubs to attract as participants
How many of these kids have received an Invitation to bring their family to the club ?
Schools Teams Racing
• Secondary Schools oriented – attraction & retention• Last year 30 + schools using Club Pacers • No regional /zone plan – club based• Four peak events
– Open Regatta – State Selection – Victorian Championships – National Team Selection
• Requirement for silver card – Join the club !
Sailability
• Inclusion • 19% of the population have some sort of
sporting disability (ASC figures) • Evolution from independent branches to an
inclusion program for clubs – People– Policies – Facilities – Boats
On Board
• Legacy of ASC funding • Two important components
– Hospitality/mentoring – Database system for keeping prospect records
and easy communication eg email
• Links to www.gosailing.com.au
Improved Sailor Performance
• Open to Clubs & Olympic & International Classes
• A Coach for every club & class linked to YV programs – NCAS Level 2 has become the YA Club Coach
Need qualified Coaches
Increased Event Capacity
• Sail Melbourne & Skandia Geelong week • Linked to
– YV Major Events calendar – Proper Risk & Safety Management
Need qualified Race & Event Management
Discussion ?
• What constrains club’s ability to increase perceived accessibility & membership ?
• What constrains clubs with regard to – Strategic Planning & policy implementation – Participation programs – Sailor Performance – Race & Event Management
• Would increasing the number of trained instructors race officers, and coaches help ?
• What else could help ?
Targeted Outcomes of Program
• Delivery of YV Vision & Mission • Sailing & boating seen as affordable,
accessible, safe enjoyable recreation • Increased success & participation at Clubs• Capacity to deliver major events
Some other things
• Webcasting • MyIT Products • Club Lease project • The Boat Show • The Boat Shed • Go Sailing Days 2006/7• Club Survey(s)
Webcasting
• Two trials to date – Club Officials – on Rule 11 Changes – Club Members – on what YV does
• Limited feedback – Who has viewed ?– Rating ?
• Potential to be a very cheap one way communication
MyIT Products
• MyClass released • MySite now has 30 + users • MyClub upgraded
– On line entry – Member communication – Boat details – More member categories
Club Lease project
• Several clubs are participating & several more are monitoring
• Objective = a better deal for clubs that reflects community / commercial arrangements based on – Community use (recognition of commercial) – Excluding Tenant improvements – Longer terms – Single landlord
• Project currently on hold due to lack of funding
The Boat Shed
• One of the best ways for clubs to change perceptions & deliver public benefit is education & training in boating & safety
• “Yachting” needs to lead the boating education agenda
• The Boat Shed would provide – Trainer the Trainer – professional development – Proof of concept of practical power boat –
especially for schools
Go Sailing Days
• Port Phillip Clubs – Sunday November 12 • Regional Clubs – Sunday January 14• Have as many as you like
• YV fortunate to have a Monash Uni Marketing Team to assist
