Civil Ceremony

First contact the Register Office which is in the district where you wish to marry. If you wish to marry in an Approved Venue you will also need to make a booking at the venue. In addition, you will both need to give a notice of intent to marry to the Superintendent Registrar of the district(s) where you live.

Church Of England or Church in Wales

Usually you may only marry in the Church of England, or Church in Wales if either you or your partner lives in the parish. Your vicar will advise you. There is generally no need to involve the local Superintendent Registrar.

Other Places of Religious Worship

First, contact the minister or other person in charge of marriages in the building. The church or religious building must normally be in the registration district where you or your partner live. It will also be necessary for both of you to give notice of intent to marry to the Superintendent Registrar of the district(s) where you live. A Registrar may also need to be booked to register the marriage.

Civil Partnerships

Since December 2005, same-sex couples can have their relationships legally recognised. You will both need to give notice of intent to form a partnership to the Superintendent Registrar of the district(s) where you live.

The choices of venue, costs and documents required are the same as those listed for civil marriage. One difference is that you are not legally required to make vows, therefore a ceremony is not required. If you wish, you and your partner can attend the Register Office, along with your two witnesses, and simply sign the schedule. However, if you would like a ceremony we would be delighted to provide one.

Page 6: Wandsworth Register Office

Legal FormalitiesBoth of you must have lived in a registration district in England or Wales for at least seven days immediately before giving notice at the Register Office. If you both live in the same district, you should both attend your local Register Office. If you live in different registration districts then each of you will need to give notice separately in your own areas, unless one (or both) of you is subject to immigration control. In this case you will need to attend a designated Register Office. Wandsworth is a designated office. After giving notice you must wait fifteen clear days before the authorities for your ceremony can be issued. Notice can only be given twelve months in advance.

Documents requiredYou will need to produce evidence of your identity, nationality, marital status and address.

British NationalsYou will be required to produce a current passport or birth certificate.

Prior to 1983, a person born in the UK obtained British citizenship automatically. For a person born in the UK after 1 January 1983, nationality is dependent upon the nationality of the parents. Please contact us if you require advice.

Foreign NationalsA person who was born abroad and is not a British citizen should be in possession of a valid passport or Home Office travel document. Additionally a person may also produce a National Identity Card or driving licence issued by the authorities in their country of origin which has a photo of the holder. If the National Identity Card or driving licence does not show that person’s nationality then they must produce further evidence of their nationality, e.g. a valid passport or Home Office document.

Asylum applicants will be issued with an Application Registration Card (ARC) by the Home Office. This document will evidence the identity and nationality self reported by the holder.

Marital StatusIf you have been married before, or have had a civil partnership formation, you will need to produce documents to confirm you are free to marry or form a partnership. If either of you has been married before, and your divorce was in England or Wales the document required is a court stamped Decree Absolute. If the divorce was elsewhere, you must produce the original document issued by that country and, if necessary, a translation. If you are widowed please bring the death certificate of your former spouse.

Name change and addressIf you have changed your name legally, please bring the legal document with you.

You will also be asked for proof of address. This may be in the form of a recent bank statement, utility bill, council tax bill etc.

The Register Office

The Register Office is located in Wandsworth Town Hall – an extremely attractive building, opened by Queen Mary in 1937. The property boasts many beautiful features providing excellent opportunities for photographs and its interior is a fine example of the best in art deco. It is often used as a location for films and television programmes.

We are based on the ground floor and have direct, easy access for disabled and elderly visitors and also for parents with prams and pushchairs.

We conduct ceremonies Monday to Saturday and also on Sundays during the busy summer months. Information on the availability of our rooms can be obtained from the Register Office.

Our Ceremony Suite

We can offer a choice of three ceremony rooms for your marriage or civil partnership, each one elegant but contrasting in design and decoration. Each of the rooms has fresh flowers and facilities for music.

The Victoria Room The informal Victoria Room accommodates up to 25 guests (20 seated). The rich red theme and magnificent original art deco conference table provide a fine setting for your ceremony.

The Alexandra RoomOur elegant Alexandra Room is themed in cream and blue with attractive wood panelling and art deco paintings. There is a theatre style layout so that brides may make an entrance and walk down the aisle. The capacity is for 50 guests (43 seated).

The Elizabeth RoomOur Elizabeth Room is perfect for small ceremonies with accommodation for 15 guests (8 seated). It is furnished in the art deco style with wooden panelling and comfortable sofas.

PLEASE DO NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM CAPACITY

Page 9: Wandsworth Register Office

The impressive oak panelled chamber room accommodates over 100 guests. The tiered bench seating is laid out in semi-circular fashion affording your guests a clear view of your special day.

The Victoria and Alexandra Rooms can be viewed via a virtual tour of our office through our website at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/registeroffice

Witnesses

You are required by law to provide two witnesses to your marriage or civil partnership. They may be relatives, friends or colleagues, and they must be able to understand and speak English.

Photogr aphs and Web Cams

Your guests are very welcome to take photographs throughout the ceremony. We do ask, however, that they do so discreetly to avoid distracting you whilst taking your vows. At the end of the ceremony there will be an opportunity for photographs of the traditional signing. After the ceremony you may take photographs in the magnificent art deco marbled entrance hall with its sweeping stairway. There is also the attractive lawned garden with the fountain and, of course, the secluded courtyard with its own fountain and imposing main entrance doors with stepped approach – perfect for those final group photographs.

There are webcams in the Victoria and Alexandra Rooms. This enables your friends and families across the world to join you on your special day. You will even have a chance to speak to them once your ceremony in concluded.

Music

New music systems have also been fitted into the Victoria and Alexandra Rooms. This will allow the playing of CDs or USB pens. We offer a selection of classical or contemporary music but if there is a special song you would like us to play, please bring it along.

Car ParkingOn Saturdays, there are two car parks at the Register Office providing ample space for you and your guests. The Town Hall courtyard car park is the closer of the two to the office and is, therefore, more convenient for the bride and groom or civil partners. Parking in the courtyard is limited to two cars for each ceremony party and we will provide permits. Your other guests can park in the second larger Town Hall car park just a couple of minutes’ walk away.

At other times during the week, we regret we are unable to provide the same parking facilities. However, we invariably are able to accommodate at least one car in the courtyard. Other guests to the ceremony may use either the nearby street parking or the NCP car park at the rear of Southside shopping centre. Please remind your guests to allow sufficient time for parking their cars before the ceremony appointment time. A map showing all these facilities is shown on your ceremony appointment card.

The CeremonyPlease arrive 15 minutes before your ceremony is due to start, allowing time for traffic, car parking and any photographs you wish to take before the ceremony begins.

The Registrar will see you both in private to check the information to be entered into the marriage register and also to confirm your choices of music and vows. This is also the time when the fee for the ceremony is paid to the Registrar. Your marriage certificate will be presented to you after the signing of the register.

Confetti can only be used in the grounds and we operate a no smoking policy.

Other Ceremonies

Renewal of Marriage Vows

This ceremony is for any married couple wishing to celebrate renewing their marriage vows in a unique and personal ceremony.

Often these ceremonies are associated with a special wedding anniversary but the ceremony is just as appropriate for couples at any stage of marriage. Many couples who marry abroad choose to renew their marriage vows in a special event held for family and friends on their return.

Naming Ceremonies

These ceremonies are a very special way of celebrating the birth of your child and welcoming the new arrival into the family and making promises of commitment to support the child. It is also ideally suited to celebrate an older or an adopted child or for embracing stepchildren into a new family.

Commitment Ceremonies

This is a meaningful and dignified ceremony for adult couples. The purpose is to make a public declaration of life-long commitment, love and dedication between two people.

…leaving you to enjoy a worry free experience with your families, your friends and each other
