WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS BR ISBANE ROAR

KICKOFF: FRIDAY 8.00PM @ SUNCORP STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS & SBS 2 LIVE 8.00PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 8.00PM

FOR THE FIRST TIME this season the Wanderers will enter a round top of the ladder, thanks to another solid win and

this week’s opponents Brisbane Roar fi nally slipping up, literally, in terrible conditions at Newcastle.

The Wanderers overcame a strong Melbourne Victory, rarely looking troubled and in typical fashion wearing down their opponents and striking the killer blow.

Many opposition fans were probably thinking the Wanderers were one-season

wonders, who would lose their solidity and buckle under pressure.

The win against an in-form Victory side further emphasised the pure class and solid structure of the Wanderers, and there is rarely moments of unrest when fans watch their side on the park.

Tony Popovic’s defensive background and the years he spent in England with Crystal Palace are invaluable in the way his team approach each match.

They’re undefeated because of the way they defend.

Of course the attack consisting of names such as Shinji Ono, Youssouf Hersi and Tomi Juric all have crucial roles; though it is the relationship and understanding they share at the back that frustrates opponents to a point where they commit too many forward and that is where the Wanderers capitalise.

Most fans are probably still confused as to why captain Michael Beauchamp remains out of the starting line-up, and

it’s amazing that even without him in the heart of defence the Wanderers have looked relatively untroubled in both games.

This is down to the incredible strength in depth the Wanderers now have in defence, and Matthew Spiranovic, should he start once again, will be key in dealing with a deadly Brisbane Roar attack.

Brisbane just fell short against Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium last round, though with a massive injury toll and even worse

conditions than what we saw at Pirtek Stadium it will be hardly a cause for concern.

As is most often the case, the loss last round coupled with surrendering their lead at the top of the ladder will prove even more of an incentive to get the win and knock the Wanderers off their perch.

Word from Brisbane is that the Roar may welcome back the trio of Besart Berisha, Liam Miller and vice-captain Shane Stefanutto for the match this week.

These three additions could prove vital

in how the match plays out, as all three are critical to how the Roar dictate the game.

Besart Berisha is known throughout the league as one of if not the most deadly striker in the league, with Shane Stefanutto adding a wealth of experience in defence.

Add in the European experience of Liam Miller, formerly on the books of such clubs as Celtic and Manchester United, and you have a wealth of talent that will test the unbeaten Wanderers in every way imaginable.

If Berisha does in fact return he will prove to be the one to watch and will surely provide the biggest threat for the opposition.

It really is diffi cult to split these two sides. The Wanderers came into the 2013/14

season with plenty of confi dence surrounding them given their form last year, while Brisbane were superb in the pre-season and many had them ear-marked for big things this year.

Is it possible that Friday night’s game at Suncorp Stadium will deliver a very early

preview of the grand fi nal early next year? One would fi nd it diffi cult to mount an argument against these two sides being there on the biggest day of the year.

All things point to a draw, although nothing is guaranteed in the A-League.

Again, this match is on free-to-air television and with a big crowd expected at Suncorp, you can expect the players to lift.

This is defi nitely one to watch, so cancel your plans and get the remote in hand.

BEING AT THE TOP of the A-League ladder is a familiar spot for the Wanderers but they’re not getting

carried away with their positive early season form just yet.

The Wanderers have had a dream start to the season and are the only A-League club yet to taste defeat.

In fact, the last regular season game the Wanderers lost was against the Central Coast Mariners back on January 6 this year.

Speaking with the media on Tuesday, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said he’s thrilled with his side’s form but knows the competition is a long way from over.

“The season’s far from wrapped up but it’s a good start,” he said.

“It’s still very early on in the season as we all know, you don’t win anything at this stage but of course we’re pleased with how we are travelling.”

Tonight, the Wanderers face their biggest test of the season up against a Brisbane Roar outfi t who relinquished their position at the top of the table last week after losing to the Newcastle Jets in atrocious conditions up the F3.

Despite holding a perfect record against the Roar from their four previous encounters last year, the Wanderers know past results don’t matter and they’ll need to be playing their best come 8pm tonight.

“I’m expecting a really tough game, they’re playing very well and have some outstanding players in their side,” Popovic said.

“I think all round the park they are a very balanced team.”

Popovic says with such a star line-up, his

side has nothing but respect for the Roar heading into this clash.

“I think as a team we have a lot of respect for them and we’ll go up there confi dent but know we’ll have to be at our best to get the result,” he said.

Meanwhile, Popovic has revealed star midfi elder Youssouf Hersi could make his long-awaited return for the Wanderers tonight after recovering from a foot injury.

“Youssouf will give us a great boost… he’s a very good player and it’s nice to have him back on the training fi eld,” Popovic said.

“He’s a great character and it’s good to see him happy again and over this injury.”

Tonight marks yet another free-to-air television appearance for the Wanderers, with the game broadcast live on SBS 2.

This season is the fi rst time the A-League competition has had free-to-air television coverage.

STAR WANDERERS DEFENDER NIKOLAI Topor-Stanley has told his coach Tony Popovic that he’s happy to continue

being the club’s captain for as long as he’s required.

The 28-year-old centre-back took over the Wanderers captaincy role two weeks ago after longstanding captain Michael Beauchamp was dumped from the line-up before Western Sydney’s clash with bottom-

placed Melbourne Heart in Round 5.Beauchamp, who’s understood to be

missing due to not fi tting in to Popovic’s game to game structures, also didn’t feature in last week’s 1-0 win over the Melbourne Victory at Pirtek Stadium.

Speaking with the media before Tuesday morning’s training session, Topor-Stanley said he’s relishing the role as club captain.

“It’s a great honour, I’ve been thankful to

be given that role the last two games and if it continues that way, so be it,” he said.

“I’m just here to do a job and I’ve been lucky enough to be given the armband the last few games.”

The Wanderers travelled up to Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane yesterday in preparation for tonight’s top of the table blockbuster against the second-placed Brisbane Roar.

Following Western Sydney’s win over the Victory last Saturday and Brisbane’s shock loss to Newcastle, the Wanderers now sit two points clear of the Roar in fi rst place.

“We try and not pay attention to the ladder too much as it’s still early days. There’s still

plenty of more games to be played and plenty of more points to be won,” Topor-Stanley said.

“The team is feeling good, full of confi dence but only for the moment. We’re not trying to get complacent but it’s where we are at.”

Having not played with the national side since 2009, Topor-Stanley is regarded as real dark horse to score himself a World Cup spot with the Socceroos if he continues his incredible form in defence.

“It’s defi nitely still in the back of my mind, it would be an honour to be there,” Topor-Stanley said.

ADAM PEACOCK PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOUR LOCAL MCDONALD ’S STORES

ADAM Peacock is a respected sports journalist who is currently partof the Fox Sports team covering the 2013/14 A-League season

IT’S NOT HARD TO fi gure out the two most successful A-League clubs of the past three years have been Central Coast

and Brisbane. If you want to shorten the timeframe to a year, sure, those two become three with the addition of Wanderers.

Sustained success is diffi cult to manage in this league, with the salary cap, short contracts and just 10 teams competing.

The Mariners and Roar have been incredible, especially given their budget limitations, though what happens when the architect departs?

Central Coast are about to fi nd out, after Graham Arnold took up a role with Japanese club Vegalta Sendai.

Phil Moss is the new man, a good bloke

who has done his time as assistant to Arnold and before that in the NSW State Leagues.

As for Brisbane, they’ve been through it, and it looks as though they have come out the other side with a continuation of the basis of Postecoglou’s plan in place.

Wasn’t smooth though. The transition to Ange’s assistant, Rado Vidosic was rocky, and Roar spent two thirds of last season hovering near the bottom, before Mike Mulvey came in and with the help of senior players knuckling down, turned it around to miss out on the Grand Final by one game.

This season, they’ve come out fl ying, with those said senior players surrounded by a new crop of youngsters encouraged by Mulvey, who knows how to bring a player

on, given he won two Youth League titles with the now defunct Gold Coast United.

How they play isn’t the same as when under Ange, but it’s equally appealing on the eye. So in short, they have dealt with Ange’s departure without having a costly couple of seasons in the wilderness.

The Mariners? We shall see.As for the Wanderers, let’s face it, Tony

Popovic won’t be boss forever. Not saying it will be soon, or in a year, or

fi ve years, but one day Popovic will move on perhaps overseas or as Socceroos boss.

One thing is certain though – if you believe in what is right now, there’s every chance it is laying the foundation for long term success.

KEEP ING UP W ITH COV IC

GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers with an exclusive column every single week

WE CERTAINLY ENCOUNTERED A tough, close game against Melbourne Victory last Saturday

night, and we expected that with the players they have and the brand of football they play. The Victory probably had the better of the first 30 minutes before we slowly crept our way back into it late in the first half. I think defensively we weathered the storm in the beginning and only let them have one chance through one of our mistakes but for the most part we limited them to only half chances. Like I say each week, we always create chances and this time we were good enough to create a clear chance and put one away late in the game.

I was really happy to see Mark Bridge finally score his first goal this season. Bridgey works extremely hard on the training field, he has done so since he came here. He had a fantastic season last

year and it was great to see him back on that scoreboard to lift his confidence.

He’d been playing some good football regardless and he’s important to the team but it’s always nice to get that first goal out of the way and hopefully there’s plenty more to come from him this season.

I think tonight’s game against Brisbane is our biggest test of the year.

The Roar have been playing some very attractive football and, like Melbourne, have some good quality players that can definitely hurt you.

Playing up in Brisbane is also tough. If you look at their record so far at home they haven’t conceded a single goal there and have picked up all their points there. They’ve been sitting at the top since the beginning of the season and will be an extremely tough prospect to come across. If we’re not switched on, not at the top of our game we could get hurt up at

Suncorp. This match is one that’s quite important and if we get something out of it we’ll have a nice little buffer on the rest of the pack.

Even though we defeated the Roar on all four occasions last season, they were all very tough games where we scraped home by the odd goal. Perhaps Brisbane are thinking about our record against them but we certainly won’t be relying on it. It’s a new season and they’ve had a great start to the year, so I don’t think that comes into it.

Do you have a question you would like to ask Ante Covic?

We’re opening up the floor to you to ask him the questions you’ve always wanted to know about the Wanderers.

Email [email protected] or post your question to Ask Ante, Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street Jamisontown NSW 2750.

LAST WEEK ’S ACT ION

WANDERERS 1 MELBOURNE VICTORY 0

ORGANISED IS ONE OF the many words someone can use when analysing a performance by the

Western Sydney Wanderers. Terrible conditions greeted the travelling

Melbourne Victory when they arrived at Pirtek Stadium on Saturday, with the weather sure to play its part in what many expected to be a very sloppy game.

Despite the horrible conditions, Wanderers fans kept up their reputation as the best supporters in the league turning out in force to hopefully watch their heroes return to the top of the ladder for the time being.

Considering the conditions, the atmosphere was electric, and some credit must go to the Melbourne Victory supporters who even made me uneasy walking into the ground.

The atmosphere seemed to have a positive aff ect on the match, as both sides looked to break the deadlock after earlier periods working each other out.

Victory looked quite threatening going forward and had the Wanderers on the back

foot. Despite this, I doubt you could fi nd a Wanderers fan who was genuinely worried with the team so organised the opposition barely had any good chances.

After holding the Victory at bay, the hosts began to stretch their opponents and it was no surprise to see them nearly break the deadlock shortly after the break. A slip up in the Victory defence left Brendon Santalab with all the time in the world to put his foot through the ball; but for some reason the forward didn’t shoot and eventually the ball was scrambled clear by the Victory defence.

The long-term absence of Youssouf Hersi coupled with the absence of danger man Tomi Juric spoke volumes, with Brendon Santalab not really stepping up to the plate as the lone striker.

They were forced to wait more than 15 minutes for their next chance as the conditions fi nally took its toll, with both attacks being out-smarted by the respective defences. The wait was well worth it. Shortly after coming on Labinot Haliti outmuscled his marker and rolled a dangerous low cross across the goal mouth, with the ever-present Mark Bridge tapping the ball home.

LUKE PRIDDIS

THE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS have announced Visy as mascot partner for the current season. The

partnership will see Michael Beauchamp in the role as offi cial ambassador for Visy Recycled Plastics as well as all player mascots wearing the Visy branded uniforms at every player walk out on A-League match days at Pirtek Stadium.

Congratulations to new Wanderers recruit Brendan Santalab for extending his contract with the club for a further two seasons last week. The 31-year-old striker said: “It’s fantastic to sign with the Wanderers, I’m happy I’m going to be here for the next two

and a half years. It was not a diffi cult choice to re-sign with the Wanderers, we’ve got fantastic fans, an unbelievable coach and when you’re working under Tony Popovic and he off ers you a new contract it makes the decision easy”.

Here’s proof football is the biggest game in Australia (not that we didn’t know already) with fi gures released showing that 1.96 million Australians are actively involved in the game as a player, coach or match offi cial. The participation number is a 13 per cent increase on a previous survey in 2010, which tallied 1.7 million people involved in the game.

I noticed some people, mostly athletics types, having a problem with Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie taking over the Wanderers training facilities at Blacktown Sports Park for the next two months to fi lm her new movie. I for one think it’s a great idea and I hope either myself or the Wanderers brigade get a start in the fi lm. I could play her love interest (of course) and the Red and Black Bloc would make the perfect extras don’t you think?

This week’s Wanderers super fans are Matthew Putland and his wife Michelle (pictured). Matthew loves his Wanderers so much that he even got their logo tattooed

over his heart – now that’s dedication! If you would like to be pictured in my column, simply send a pic of yourself in your Wanderers gear to [email protected].

The W-League Wanderers went down 2-0 to Canberra last weekend. The side defended well in the second half but the damage was done in the opening 45 minutes.

Lastly, congratulations to Wanderworld columnist Ante Covic on being a fantastic ambassador for the White Ribbon campaign to stop violence against women. Ante is a true gentlemen.
