Dear Parents/Carers and students I am immensely proud of the progress that our students continue to make, both in their academic studies and in undertaking various extra curricular activities that continue to enhance their skills and experience. Their contribution to life in the academy and in their own community is proving to be something that is sustained and to be commended, as it is central to our ethos at Walworth Academy. In this edition you will find many examples of the experiences that broaden the horizon for our young people, along with their willingness to develop themselves. As many of you are now sadly aware, we lost a valued member of our community, Haddy Manga, who had only just this year graduated from Year 11. Her unexpected passing lead to a deeply moving memorial service which was held in school. This occasion revealed to me how strong our bonds are to one another, as we united in grief, to celebrate a life. I would like to take the opportunity to remind you of the importance of revision over the holiday period as there are many significant exams for those students at Key Stage 4 and 5, in January. Please support us as the students look forward to fresh challenges in the new year. I also would like to personally wish you all a peaceful and joyous time over the festive period as we reflect on a very successful year to date. Kind Regards Devon Hanson

On Monday, 12th December parents were invited to the library to become more familiar with the aims of the Accelerated Reader programme whereby students read a book suitable for their reading age and then take a quiz afterwards. Ms WIllans, Mr Ogborn and Ms Toworfe gave inspiring presentations about promoting a love of reading and the successful use of the Accelerated Reader programme. Ms Schwartz organised refreshments whilst the librarians, Ms Kilmartin and Ms O’Shea explained about the success of the new Reading Buddies scheme, which sees 6th formers read with a younger student, to support their literacy.
There was a Christmas bookstall and a lucky dip, where parents received popular children’s books as prizes.

Year 12 visit to the Royal College of Surgeons
On 28th September 10 year 12 AS Chemistry students visited the Royal College of Surgeons, to hear talks by undergraduate medical students and trainee surgeons. There was advice and tips on how to apply to Medical school. The students also had an opportunity to learn and practise the suturing technique- a method for closing cutaneous wounds.
Walworth goes to the Law Society On Monday 17th October, eleven students from Year 10 attended the joint Law Society and Bar Council career information day at the Law Society in Chancery Lane. The students had a chance to see a mock trial and be part of a jury. They were able to talk to solicitors and barristers to find out what it takes to become a lawyer and
what sort of careers are open to them. And on a lighter note, they were able to participate in games and quizzes related to legal matters.

The library was delighted to welcome Catherine Johnson, the well-known children’s author and screen-writer, who came to talk to three Year 7 and 8 classes about her latest novel, Brave New Girl. Catherine Johnson was born in London in 1962. Her father was Jamaican and her mother was Welsh. She has written fifteen novels as well as screenplays (she wrote the screenplay of Bullet Boy). The author explained in her talk how she got inspiration for the book from her multi-cultural background, her experience of making films and from living in Hackney - being familiar with the local landmarks that feature in the book. Brave New Girl is set in a school in Hackney, next to the Olympic stadium. It tells how a girl overcomes the difficulties of fitting into a new school by befriending a boy who asks her to star in a film he is making. He then
enters his film into a competition. The characters are very realistic and Walworth students will easily relate to them. At the end of her talk there was time for the students to buy copies of the book signed and dedicated to them by the author. The library has bought some additional copies for students to borrow.
Novelist visits Walworth
Making links with Mumbai On Friday 4th November 2011, a delegation of teachers and students from Mumbai, led by Dr Sudhakar Agarkar, visited Walworth Academy. The visit was organised in conjunction with Vallin Miller from the Leaders of Tomorrow programme. CASTME (Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology and Mathematics Educators) has been encouraging closer interaction among teachers in commonwealth countries. The party of delegates were given a tour of the Academy and an overview of the Ark network of schools. Members from the group were keen to look at lesson plans, interactive resources and finger recognition technology for school entry and lunch. Dr Sudhakar Agarkar addressed our 6th Form students about opportunities in India and
provided an insight into the education system in India. The delegates were very appreciative of the academy’s hospitality and a return invitation was offered to visit Mumbai in the future.

Mr Motivator Encourages Students to Exceed Their Dreams
Students were inspired by a recent motivational performance by Action Jackson, an outstanding role model for young people. He challenged students to start their future today by making them believe that they are already outstanding. Students were riveted and encouraged by his words and this led to a stunning performance by Ravi in Year 9 who was determined to succeed and overcome his challenge to “reach for the stars” in a memory task. Every student left with a strong sense of determination and a renewed sense of pride to reach for their own personal goals.
The Year 10 football team have been in fine form this season only losing one game and so expectations were high as the team began their 4th round match against the City of Westminster. After a slow start, Walworth Academy began to dominate the game with a great chance falling to Tonye Fiberesima which forced a fine save from the opposition’s goalkeeper. Samuel Koroma began to dictate the midfield with his range of passing and dribbling skills and on twenty minutes he opened the scoring with a great
goal from all of 25 yards, into the top corner. Walworth’s pressure continued in the second half and Tonye Fiberesima put his early miss behind him with a tidy finish in the bottom corner. It was Tonye’s first goal for Walworth Academy since joining in September. Walworth Academy were now in full flow and, but for an outstanding performance from City of Westminster’s goalkeeper, the score line would have been much higher. Walworth will now host Forest Hill School in the quarter-finals.

Walworth Academy students from Year 8 and 10 impressed the crowd with a vibrant, passionate and committed performance of “The Tempest” for the Shakespeare School Festival 2011. The actors had excellent command of the language: behind every line spoken was intention and understanding, with a delivery that exuded clarity and conviction. Riyan Moussaoui, Darrieal Ramku and Sena Chin have the most beautiful speaking voices and the audience really enjoyed listening to them wrap themselves around Shakespearean language. The Walworth Academy students were proud and powerful performers, commanding the stage like professionals. The accompaniment from our drummers allowed every student to burst on to the playing space with their energy commanding the attention of the audience. It was a colourful, magical performance, with lots of lovely comic moments that had the audience in stitches! The cast would like to thank all teachers, 6th form students and parents who came and supported them on the night.
“This can’t be Shakespeare....it’s funny” Badewa Lahan “I have a better understanding of Shakespeare now. This experience will help me in my study of Shakespeare in English GCSE.” Edith Adu “At first I was nervous to go out, but I thought well . . . why not I might as well go on stage and do my best . . . and I loved it.” Naomi Blin “I loved my costume.” Sederatu Sesay “I was more confident in the final performance because my parents were in the audience.” Brett Bevan

On Wednesday, 16th November, the Creative Writing Club went on a trip to the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. We visited the exhibitions ‘Magic Worlds’ and ‘The Stuff of Nightmares’ to become inspired for new stories based around fairytales, mystery and the imagination. Students were encouraged to find three magical objects that they could use in their writing. Popular items included a real-life magician’s box, a giant robot and a wizard’s cloak. We watched magic tricks displayed on television screens and then went on to explore the rest of the collection, which is filled with an interesting array of children’s toys and items from Victorian times onward. Particular highlights were Asian shadow puppets and giant, life-like doll houses.
The museum is a truly interactive experience and the students enjoyed engaging with many of the items, which included costumes, puppets shows, board games and a police car. A good day was had by all and we enjoyed discussing our ideas for stories on the bus back to school. The majority of stories will focus on haunted museums, mysterious magicians and evil dolls. We’re looking forward to reading them and publishing a selection on the school website. We asked for students’ opinions on the museum afterwards and here are some of their comments: “It was more exciting than other museums.” Ismail, Year 7 “I really liked the fact that we could try on the costumes.” Ahmed, Year 7 “The magic videos were wicked. I’m asking my parents for a magic set for Christmas.” Riyan, Year 8 “This has given me some really cool ideas for a sinister museum story.” Kaidi, Year 8 “I can’t believe we could go to this museum for free!” Idriss, Year 10

Attendance Update Congratulations to all our students and a big thank you to all our parents/carers as we celebrate over 95% attendance for the current academic year. We appreciate every effort that is made to support excellent attendance at school.
Excellent attendance has contributed to outstanding progress being made by our students across Walworth Academy. Please assist us in maintaining our target of over 95% for the whole year by arranging any appointments outside of school hours.

On Thursday 8th December, Reverend David Evans brought a group of senior members from the local community to visit Walworth Academy, to look at the progress we have made and to share with us some of their memories of the school as it used to be. There was a real sense of community as guests chatted with students and staff as they were given a tour by Natasha Hayles and Chantelle O’Hagan, both from Year 11. There were plenty of opportunities to share stories and reflections on the history of the school.
Performances from Year 8 musicians and a specially assembled choir rounded off a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Saturday School Success For the last few weeks, motivated students in KS3 have attended a pilot Saturday School from 9 am until 2 pm to improve their grades in core subjects and meet their learning targets. Students are supported by sixth form mentors, such as Suhana, Joshua and Aminat, who challenge them weekly to make improvements in their study habits. Students have to make detailed logs of their learning using a range of on-line study tools to give instant feedback on their grades. Many students have reported a huge increase in their grades since attending and many have reached the top levels of 6A and 7C in recent tests. Did Saturday School Change my Life? ‘Yes it did, as it extended my learning and has helped me to prepare for my GCSEs. I couldn’t have done this without my 6th Form mentors and Mrs Willans by my side encouraging me to succeed in my work.’ Korie Campbell ,Year 9.
‘I hope and pray that I get something really good out of Saturday School when I get my A2 grades results back. I want my family to be proud and get invited to the red carpet celebration when I meet my targets’. Joshua Ogunseye, Year 9.
