Your Hosts – The Walter Family

Generations of Farm PrideWALTER GRAIN FARMSThe Walter family had its start in 1957 when Bernard and Beverly purchased 50 acres in Jefferson County, town of Milford. Their son Mike farmed with his father all his life. In 1992, Mike and his wife Sarah took over the operation. Their farm and family grew quickly over the years. They have five married children, with 17 grandchildren ranging in age from 5-18.

Two of their sons have actively farmed with them since they were in high school. Adam and Heather have three children, Julie 17, Taylor 15, and Lisa 13. Brad and Kristi have four children, Morgan 9, Eli 8, Layla 6, and Maci 5. In 2003 the Walter Grain Farms logo was adopted. The 2nd and 3rd generations continue the farming tradition started by the late Bernard Walter and his wife Beverly, with the 4th generation coming up fast!

The farm has been through many phases of agriculture in the last 62 years. For many years Bernard and Beverly milked 80 cows, eventually transitioning to over 800 head of veal calves, feeder steers, and heifers. There was a time when Mike and Sarah were farrowing 350 sows and selling feeder pigs. Currently Mike, Brad, and Adam are cash cropping 6000 acres of owned and rented land. In addition to the cropping operation, the Walters supplement their income with a custom land tiling business. The Walters have recently improved their facilities with a new farm equipment storage building on the main farm where Mike and Sarah live.

Bernard and Beverly proudly hosted the Wisconsin Farm Progress Days in 1984 on this same site. The 2019 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days will mark the 35th anniversary of that first show. Beverly, Mike, Sarah, Brad, Kristi, Adam, and Heather, along with their children look forward to welcoming you to their farm. They invite you to join them in celebrating the many generations of Jefferson County farm families that are doing their part to keep agriculture thriving in Jefferson County.

18 | WISCONSIN FARM TECHNOLOGY DAYS

Ag Career Day is an extension of the Celebration of Wisconsin Ag, with an invitation to 1,000 FFA and SkillsUSA students to participate in an interactive Career Scavenger Hunt at the Jefferson County, Wisconsin Farm Technology Days.

Students going into grades 7th – 12th are encouraged to sign up on our website, via a Google Survey to reserve a spot on one of 20 Cheesehead Express buses from Kobussen Buses that will depart from 10 different locations in the state on July 23, 2019.

Ag Career Day is presented by Pioneer Seeds and will use the cow monitoring technology of Allflex Livestock Intelligence. Each student will wear a cow ear tag with an RFID button on it, that will react with a beep on each scavenger hunt stop once students are scanned by the cow monitoring wand.

To receive a scan of the wand, students will be asked to interact with a ‘Career Takeaway’ question at each of the 13 Career Scavenger Hunt stops.

The career stops will range from plant gene editing, to animal handling, to financial services, to skill trades to robotic milking machines. The goal is to show students there are many possibilities to consider for a career in Wisconsin agriculture.

Students will start and end their exploration in the Future Generations Area sponsored by Compeer. In that area are two special events. 1. Presentation by Kim Bremmer of AgInspirations.com to students during the scavenger hunt. She suggests ways students can position support of agriculture without getting defensive when faced with misinformation. 2. Students will be asked to fill out a Thank You Farmers note card from Culver’s with their name, age, school and one thing they learned during Ag Career.

Before getting back on the Cheesehead Express buses, students will be given an ‘Explore. Experience and Engage.” summary resources brochure to get started on planning their future in Wisconsin ag, developed with the help of Wisconsin Ag In The Classroom.

CURT PATE HORSEMANSHIP & STOCKMANSHIPCurt Pate conducts demonstrations and clinics on colt starting, horsemanship, and low stress stockmanship. His abilities conducting both horsemanship and stockmanship clinics along with being an effective communicator have made him a sought-after clinician both on the national and international scene. Horsemanship is described as the art of riding, handling and training horses. Stockmanship is the art and science of handling cattle and other livestock properly, while protecting production, in a safe and low stress manner. Curt believes when animals are handled in a low stress manner, they are healthier, and produce more with less injuries. Less aggressive healthier animals have a direct impact on productiveness on the livestock owner.

TERRY (TJ) CLIBBORN – A TRUE PARTNERSHIPTJ was born in Glen Innes Australia and moved to the states in 1990 and his farm is south of Deerfield Wisconsin. His Australian heritage is of the utmost importance to him, as is his belief in God. TJ is a legend, working with wild mustangs and competing in the Extreme Mustang Makeover. Extreme Mustang Makeover, participants are given 90 days to train a wild horse and show what the horse has learned. The wild mustangs are his God-given passion. For the last 40 years he has worked with all breeds and has found the horse never lies. He finds people are the hardest to contend with because they want to see results now- horses undoubtedly don’t learn that way. Horses must learn to trust first and with trust anything is possible. TJ likes to think his program teaches ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

MEGAN MCISAAC – DRESSAGE TRAININGMegan McIsaac, FEI trainer and USDF certified instructor. USDF Gold, Silver, Bronze medalist, all USDF bars. She

HISTORY: To show our “Generations of Farm Pride,” Innovation Square will highlight the history of Jefferson County and its agricultural development.

Guided and supported by several local historical societies and museums, along with local historians, and experts on Jefferson County archaeology, we’ll include information and exhibits that show how agriculture in Jefferson County has progressed from 600 AD Native American agriculture to the foundation of America’s Dairyland to today’s progressive farms and innovative companies. As a point of emphasis for the county’s rich agricultural history, we’ll feature a Family Farm Honor Wall, listing the Centennial and Sesquicentennial farms. This area also includes an antique farm wagon for a perfect “selfie site.”

RECREATION: Jefferson County has an incredible array of parks and public areas. Because Jefferson County is where “Outdoor Recreation Meets Small Town Living,” attendees will find information and educational materials on the county’s waterways, “paddle” tours, bike and horse trails, public hunting areas, and other key recreational and family activity opportunities.

ENERGY: Innovation Square also includes an energy pavilion, providing exhibits focused on green power sources such as solar, wind and methane. This pavilion will provide attendees with current information on technologies that save money and improve the environment.

HEALTH: Healthy living, healthy lifestyles and farm safety are top-of-mind issues for many visitors. Our health pavilion, anchored
