Commas in a list One way you can use commas is to separate items in a list.

The rule is to put a comma after each item, except the last two. Put ‘and’ or ‘or’ between the last two items.

Watch the video below to help explain this even more:• https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z8x6cj6/articles/zxvcrdm

Comma after a fronted adverbialCommas are used after a fronted adverbial to separate it from the rest of the sentence.A fronted adverbial is a word or phrase at the beginning of a sentence that is used to describe the action that follows.

For example

As the last ray of sun went down, Yasmine crept silently out of the house

Commas change the meaning of a sentenceAdding a comma can change the meaning of a sentence and make the meaning of the sentence clearer.

For example:

As the campers sat round the fire eating the bear stayed in the bushes.

As the campers sat round the fire eating, the bear stayed in the bushes.

A comma is needed in this sentence to make it clear that the campers are not eating the bear!

Adding the comma makes it clear that the campers are eating by the fire and the bear is in the bushes.

Commas change the meaning of sentencesRead the following sentences and look at how important the comma is in changing the meaning of the sentence.

As the sun shone, red people moved into the shade. As the sun shone red, people moved into the shade.

It’s time to eat, children! It’s time to eat children!

Adding the comma changes if it is red people who have moved or if the sun is red.

The first sentence reads as though someone is calling children to eat their dinner, Whereas the second sentence seems like someone is eating children!

Page 19: WALT: use commas accurately · SPAG PowerPoint When teaching SPAG, go through the PowerPoint with the children and work with them to learn how to accurately use commas. The children

Read the following sentences and look at how important the comma is in changing the meaning of the sentence.

Slow children crossing. Slow, children crossing.

Hopefully these example showed how something as small as comma can have a big impact on the meaning of a sentence and that they need to be used accurately.

The first sentence reads as children who are moving slowly are crossing. Whereas the second sentence tells people to slow down because children are crossing.

Activity Part 1Write down down the pairs of sentences and explain what each sentence means when it has a comma in a different place (like what I did on the previous slides).

The old lady collected all sorts of things: silver, paper hats, felt, flowers and buttons. The old lady collected all sorts of things: silver paper hats, felt flowers and buttons.

Let’s eat Grandpa. Let’s eat, Grandpa.

Page 21: WALT: use commas accurately · SPAG PowerPoint When teaching SPAG, go through the PowerPoint with the children and work with them to learn how to accurately use commas. The children

Activity Part 1- AnswersThe old lady collected all sorts of things: silver, paper hats, felt, flowers and buttons. The old lady collected all sorts of things: silver paper hats, felt flowers and buttons. - In the second sentence she had collected paper hats which were silver and flowers which were felt. Whereas in the first sentence the silver is a separate item to the paper hats and the flowers are not felt, the felt and flowers are separate.

Let’s eat Grandpa. Let’s eat, Grandpa.

In the first sentence it reads as though they are going to eat Grandpa, whereas in the sentence they are telling Grandpa that it’s time to eat.

Activity Part 2Rewrite the following sentences adding a comma in order to change or clarify the meaning. Do not any extra words, just a comma

Are you coming to see Ali?

What is thing called honey?

After we left Grandma, Dad and I went to the cinema.

When she’s not working she loves eating her dog and her family.

At the moment the sentence is asking someone if they are coming to see Ali. Add a comma so I am asking Ali.

Add a comma so that Grandma is coming to the cinema too.

Page 23: WALT: use commas accurately · SPAG PowerPoint When teaching SPAG, go through the PowerPoint with the children and work with them to learn how to accurately use commas. The children

Commas to add extra informationCommas can be used to separate out extra information and make the sentences easier to read. A pair of commas can separate extra information in the middle of a sentence, they go either side of the added information. This extra information could be taken out and the sentence still makes sense.

For exampleSusannah’s crocodile is always happy. Susannah’s crocodile, who loves flowers, is always happy.

The extra information has a comma either side. This extra information doesn’t make sense on its own.

Simple sentence

Page 27: WALT: use commas accurately · SPAG PowerPoint When teaching SPAG, go through the PowerPoint with the children and work with them to learn how to accurately use commas. The children

Read the following sentences and look at how the extra information has been added into the sentence with a comma either side of it.

The school, which is on the main road, is going to have a new zebra crossing. Emma’s sister, who lives in London, won the school rugby trophy. James, a skilled football player, scored every goal at yesterday’s game. Chloe, who was a chef in France, always carried a bag of sweets in her pocket. My bike, which is very old, is sadly broken.

Commas to add extra information

Page 28: WALT: use commas accurately · SPAG PowerPoint When teaching SPAG, go through the PowerPoint with the children and work with them to learn how to accurately use commas. The children

Activity Part 1Match the extra information to the simple sentence. Then write the whole sentence, with the extra information and the commas. Remember the extra information needs to be in the middle of the sentence not put on the end.

James ate the satsuma quickly.

who was very hungry.

The boys went to the park.

The flight only took three hours.

which felt really long

Page 29: WALT: use commas accurately · SPAG PowerPoint When teaching SPAG, go through the PowerPoint with the children and work with them to learn how to accurately use commas. The children

Activity Part 2Rewrite the following sentences and add in commas accurately. Remember how commas are used around extra information. If this extra information is removed the sentence still makes sense.

Pepperoni my favourite pizza topping is a kind of sausage.

My pet mice called Sammy and Sally are adorable.

My parents who met fifteen years ago get on really well.

On Thursday the day after tomorrow I am going on holiday.

Commas can be used to separate main clauses from subordinate clauses in complex sentences, but only when the subordinate clause comes first.

Main clause- makes sense on its own as a sentence. Subordinate clause- doesn’t make sense as a sentence on its own, needs the main clause to make sense. Often they begin with a conjunction.

Even though it was raining, we went to the beach.

Commas to separate clauses

This part of the sentence doesn’t make sense on its own.

This is the main clause as it could be a sentence on its own.Comma is used in

between the two clauses.

Commas to separate clauses.Read at the following sentences and look carefully at where the comma is. Remember when the subordinate clause is first, we use a comma to separate the clauses.

Once I’d eaten my ice cream, I went home. While you’re waiting, you can read a magazine. After she ate dinner, she called up her friend. When it is brown, take the cake out of the oven. After Ali sneezed all over it, I didn’t want to eat the cake.

Before you leave

come and say goodbye.

Mary will need a towel.
