During this busy time of year, I hope you find some time to relax with family and friends and enjoy the holiday season. It was wonderful to see so many of you at parent conferences. We had an excellent turnout, with more than 500 families visiting teachers in just three days. I hope you enjoyed having your student share their progress and their goals with you. I also hope you were able to speak to teachers about any questions or concerns you have. If you would like to follow up with any teachers before the end of the term, please don’t hesitate to call or email. We always welcome your involvement and support. As you know, the end of the quarter is quickly approaching on November 9th. Therefore, it is important that students schedule any needed makeup tests or retakes with their teachers before the end of this week. Please also remind them to get any missing assignments turned in as soon as possible. Final grades will be submitted by teachers on November 13, and will be mailed home to families the following week. On a final note, I would like to make a request of 8th grade parents. As you know, our 8th grade barbecue and recognition ceremony are completely parent led. Traditionally, 8th grade parents meet monthly throughout the year to fund raise and plan for this event. As of now, we still don’t have an 8th grade parent committee. If you are willing to help, please come to the first meeting on Monday, November 7th at 7:30. We will meet in the library following the PALS meeting. Happy Thanksgiving! Tanya Pruett Principal

Greetings Mustangs,

I want to begin by wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving. During this busy time of year, I

hope you find some time to relax with family and friends and enjoy the holiday season.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at parent conferences. We had an excellent turnout,

with more than 500 families visiting teachers in just three days. I hope you enjoyed having

your student share their progress and their goals with you. I also hope you were able to speak

to teachers about any questions or concerns you have. If you would like to follow up with any

teachers before the end of the term, please don’t hesitate to call or email. We always welcome

your involvement and support.

As you know, the end of the quarter is quickly approaching on November 9th. Therefore, it is

Saludos Mustangs,

Hello Mustangs, The week of October 31st-November 4th is Spirit Week at Walt Morey, so show your school spirit by joining in

with the Leadership team.

Monday: Wear black and orange

Tuesday: Dress as a Tacky Tourist. You should wear Hawaiian shirts, socks and sandals, and a fanny pack to

complete the look. Make sure the fanny pack is empty.

Wednesday: Wear your wackiest pair of socks

Thursday: Wear a cozy pair of PJs. Remember the dress code still applies, so NO SLIPPERS.

Friday: Get ready for the Hectic Homeroom competition. Your homeroom will design their own spirit ensemble.

Each of the homerooms should come up with a plan for how to dress as a team. Leadership students will come

around to count your participation on Friday morning, and the winning homeroom will be honored (and

possibly rewarded) at the assembly. Ties will be broken with creativity, so make it good.

Have a great week, Mustangs.

From the Gym

Here we are into October already and wanting to share with you what has been going on in the

gym. Students came back to school prepared for activity with their own PE uniform of choice that

fit under our guidelines of black on the bottom and grey on top. Some students realized that they

needed to bring an extra sweatshirt to throw on in the morning because it is usually chilly in the

gym or outside.

Open House went well. Many of you stopped by to introduce yourself with your child and to see

how they were doing briefly, while some returning families decided to pop in with a smile and

wave noticing the lines were long. Thanks to all that took the time to invest in your student.

If your student is absent from school for any reason other than school related activity

(band/choir/orchestra tour or class fieldtrip), please make sure they fill out a PE make up to earn

back the points that they lost that day. All PE students should know where to find the make-up

form, how to fill it out and who to return it to. Not doing this, will affect their grade to some

degree.

Up to this point we have taught all our classes their daily warm-up which

is the hardest 7-8 minutes of their PE class time. Students have had an

opportunity to try their skills at Gaelic Football, Soccer and a brief stint

with Football. Up next…Fitness Testing.

Congratulations to September PE Students of the Month: Joseph

Mazhnikov, Emily Frick, Jacob Hendricks, Denali Jones, Jeffrey Hutchison, Belen Cedillo,

Counselor Information What Middle School Counselors Provide: From the American School Counselor

Association (www.schoolcounselor.org)

Middle School Students' Developmental Needs

Today’s young people are living in an exciting time, with an increasingly diverse

society, new technologies, and expanding opportunities. To help ensure that they are

prepared to become the next generation of parents, workers, leaders and citizens, every

student needs support, guidance and opportunities during adolescence, a time of rapid growth and

change. Early adolescents face unique and diverse challenges, both personally and developmentally, that have

an impact on academic achievement. During this passage from childhood to adolescence, middle school

students are characterized by a need to explore a variety of interests, connecting their learning in the classroom

to its practical application in life and work; high levels of activity coupled with frequent fatigue due to rapid

growth; a search for their own unique identity as they begin turning more frequently to peers rather than parents

for ideas and affirmation; extreme sensitivity to the comments from others; and heavy reliance on friends to

provide comfort, understanding and approval. Meeting the Challenge Middle school counselors are professional

educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s

diverse student population. Middle school counselors do not work in isolation; rather they are integral to the

total educational program. They provide proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of

City of Wood Village Brings Pumpkin Carving to Morey!!!

Walt Morey wants to thank City of Wood Village for donating 54 pumpkins, carving tools, and snacks to

provide the opportunity for fifty-four art students to participate in the local event The Great Pumpkin Fest. This event

took place at Donald Robertson Park on Saturday the 29th of October.

Mr. Greg Dirk, Wood Village’s Records Manager/HR Specialist contacted Morey’s art teacher Mr. Abbert

before the event with an offer that we couldn’t refuse. He wanted to know if we were interested in carving fifty

pumpkins as a sculpture project in art. Mr. Dirk delivered those pumpkins and picked them up so they could be on

display for The Great Pumpkin Fest. The focus was on carving an image or pattern that students were interested in.

The students in Mr. Abbert’s 5th, 6th, and 7th period classes participated. Overall they seemed to thoroughly enjoy the

experience with quite a few saying that this was the first pumpkin they had ever carved. Many students expressed

that their carving has improved. And of course, a few said they wished they could smash them. (But that wasn’t an

option.)

On Friday the 28th of October at the end of the school day students displayed their carved

creations to the entire school by presenting them on the front lawn. The pride that students displayed was obvious.

Walt Morey would simply like to thank City of Wood Village for providing so many of Morey’s students with this

unique art opportunity. Thank you!
