aspect of the learning process to redefine the way in which the process is formulated. In this concept, “instead of rows of desks, you’ve got tables angled around the space, where small groups of students sit in ultra-flexible swivel chairs, while the instructor moves freely around the room. Tables have ‘huddle boards’ -- little, mobile whiteboards for small group work that can later be shared with the entire class. Multiple projection screens on each wall keep students stimulated by giving everyone a front-row advantage.” [Steelcase]

Held on the main and first floor of the Center for the Arts, the evening started at 6 p.m. with drinks and the opening of two silent auction areas. Bidding was fast and furious with many items bid out with the buy it now option. Restaurant gift certificates, golf packages, technology and spa days were the hot silent auction items of the evening. The excitement continued with a passed dinner catered by Dina’s Restaurant of Ellicottville, followed by a live auction with auctioneer Nate Smith ’93, who was assisted by Bob McCarthy.

Entitled the EAGLES GALA AUCTION, this year’s event provided guests the opportunity to bid on a number of live auction items ranging from fabulous trips to Napa Valley, California, Naples, Florida and the White Mountains of Arizona as well as an iPad, ski’s, Pandora jewelry basket, Brown Derby Surf & Turf Dinner for eight at the SBU Friary, a Ryan Miller autographed hockey stick, 50” plasma television, and perhaps the most interesting piece of the evening - an eight-foot church pew from the St. Elizabeth Mother House!

For the first time, the auction catalog was available online as well as distributed the evening of the event. Special thanks must be given to our lead sponsors of the evening: St. Bonaventure University, Worth W. Smith, Rock City Park and Dresser-Rand. Additionally, Olean Physical Therapy Professionals, PLLC, O’Laughlin Cadillac, Buick & GMC and Olean General Hospital provided support to the event along with numerous other local companies and organizations. All of these organizations purchased ads and event tickets, while also

SUCCESSEagles Gala AuctionMore than 150 people gathered to support STCS and Walsh for this year’s Eagles Gala Auction that took place at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on the campus of St. Bonaventure University. The schools hosted this silent and live auction fundraiser on Thursday, August 4, 2011. The event shattered all previous auction records - with the number of attendees and proceeds of more than $45,000 raised to benefit the two schools.

The start of the school year always brings a bit of trepidation along with excitement in seeing old friends and meeting new classmates. This year was no exception as the students of STCS

and Walsh were greeted by new principal, Mr. Tom McGlinn and by a new uniform policy that quite honestly, has our students looking very nice indeed.

This year we have students traveling from not only our local areas of Olean, Allegany, Portville, Cuba and Weston Mills, but also from Bradford, Pa., Springville, Arcade,

Ellicottville and everywhere in between. More than 85 new students joined us this year at STCS and Walsh, and we are fortunate to have parents and community members that are engaged in the mission of our schools. We encourage alumni to stop by and see the transformation - the Eagle spirit is alive and well.

donating items to be auctioned. Their assistance along with the encouragement of the community contributed to the evening’s success.

Special thanks to chair couples Dina DiPasquale and Jim Carls and Barkley and Debbie Daugherty, who worked tirelessly throughout the summer hosting gift gathering parties and generating enthusiasm for the Gala. Fall SportsFall sports are underway with three varsity teams on the fields of play - boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and girls’ volleyball. The teams continue to improve their skills and remain committed to good sportsmanship in all of their matches.

The varsity boys’ soccer team started the season strong with three wins right out of the gate. Coached by Jorge Tufino, a former professional soccer player from Ecuador, this young team has developed a strong team atmosphere and have continued to surprise their opponents with their skill level and commitment to excellence. Sophomore Christian Daugherty was recently named the U.S. Army Athlete of the Week (9/19-9/23) for his contributions on the soccer field. The U.S. Army awards an athlete of the week through WPIG (announced on the air and on their website). Athletes are nominated for excelling on the field of play and in the classroom. Christian scored three goals in wins over Franklinville and Central Baptist, and has demonstrated his commitment in the classroom by being a model student. With additional wins over West Seneca Christian and Coudersport, the team’s overall record stands at 5-3-1 with four games remaining in the season. Two of these games are at home and we encourage our alumni to come out and support the team.

Girls’ varsity soccer is back at Walsh. The girls fielded a team for the first time in two years last fall and this year, they have added players who are intent on improving and recording their first win. While the team is very young, they should be a force in the near future. Coach Sarah Rheinhart leads the team this fall and has emphasized drills and basic skill improvement. Thus far the girls have played five matches and while having lost those games, they remain positive that they will record their first win. Three games remain in the season - two of those are at home.

An intramural volleyball program in 2010 blossomed into the first varsity volleyball team in the history of the school last year. The team was young and gained valuable experience in their inaugural competitive season, picking up their first win in school history on October 19, 2010. Coached by Nate and Cait Farnum, this year’s team boasts many returning players and they continue to be competitive in their matches this season. They have played six games so far and came very close to recording their first win of the season against Belfast. Four games remain and the girls remain hopeful that they will again post a win this season.

Boys’ soccer experiencing success in 2012.

The 43rd annual Walsh Alumni Reunion Weekend was a resounding success with more than 130 alumni on hand to reminisce, tour the school and enjoy an evening of food and music. The school was thrilled to welcome the alumni back to their alma mater - especially the opportunity to celebrate a 50th reunion with the class of 1961.

Walsh has undergone many changes over the years – priests and nuns teaching to now, lay faculty and staff; uniforms – we still have them – but yes they have changed; a jukebox in the cafeteria during lunch to a homecoming dance in the cafeteria; but some things have stayed the same – our commitment to Catholic education and our ability to offer outstanding academics. Walsh is now part of a bigger school – serving children from three years old to 18. Montessori, the #1 elementary school in all of Western New York, the #1 middle school in Cattaraugus

and Allegany counties and the International Baccalaureate High School – all on one campus – ready to serve our children and our community.

The school’s success is evident in our alumni – many of whom gathered on reunion weekend to share memories of their time here at Walsh. Part of the festivities included the induction of two outstanding alumni into the Walsh Wall of Fame. This was the fifth induction class since the inception of the Wall of Fame in 2007. The Wall of Fame honors those individuals who have made a significant contribution, in any field, to Archbishop Walsh over the years. James Leone ’63 and Ed Krieger ’71† were the honored inductees, with classmate Tim Flanigan accepting the award on behalf of Ed Krieger.

A unique celebration during the evening was that of our first 50-year class from Walsh - the class of 1961. Some things

have definitely changed since 1961, but the qualities found within those students in 1961 are quite similar to those who walk these halls today and we were honored that members of the class of 1961 joined together to celebrate 50 years since their graduation. Each class member was recognized with a special plaque inscribed with the Prayer of St. Francis in honor of the Class of 1961. In attendance were Sylvia Ligus Baer, B. James Bodenstein, Sharon Leone Cummings, Mary Scheminger Hays, Sarah Lyons, Barbara Bebko Matthes, Joan M. Passerino and John Spencer.

No reunion is ever complete without a few fun prize giveaways and this year was no exception. Winners of each category were given a logoed Walsh nylon drawstring bag: First Registered for this year’s reunion event was Sharon Cummings – Class of 1961; Farthest Traveled (determined via a MapQuest suggested route
