Thank you for downloading/requesting the application pack for the post of Head of Year Pastoral – current Year 10. What makes our school amazing?

We love recognising our pupils’ successes – we use our Stars & Stripes system to reward those pupils who repeatedly do the right thing.

Our pupils’ behaviour is fantastic. We have lovely, engaged pupils who are very capable and want to learn.

Our pupils have amazingly supportive parents who will back you up with learning and behaviour.

We broaden our pupils’ horizons with a wide range of trips. Last year our pupils visited the following (to name a few):-

- Los Angeles (Media Studies trip) - New York (Business & ICT trip)

- Sorento, Italy (Ancient History trip) - Montgenvre, France (Ski trip)

- Villa Real (Football Tour) - Chateau du Broutel (Y7 French trip)

Our pupils give so much back to their community

- Our pupils put on a vast array of expressive and creative arts shows and exhibitions, for example: Annie this year, Wizard of Oz last year, Express Yourself Showcase, Oscars Night and Creative Showcase & Careers Exhibition.

- Our pupils complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award and volunteer in our local community.

- Our pupils raise huge amounts every year for a whole school charity (£3,860 last year for Teenage Cancer Trust) and support a wide variety of other charities.

- Our pupils participate in and win most of the wide range of sporting activities offered; girls & boys football & rugby, netball, basketball, athletics and cricket.

- Our pupils are dedicated to our inclusive community, including a clear commitment to eradicating HBT language.

Required as soon as possible Head of Year Pastoral – Year 10 Grade 3C points 32-35 £23,911.00 - £25,841.00 (actual salary) 36 Hours, Term Time Only plus additional training days and some evening work. This is a permanent post.. We are looking to appoint a Head of Year Pastoral – Responsible for the current Year 10. As a Head of Year Pastoral, you will:

Enable students to achieve their full learning and social skills potential, particularly students requiring extra and extended support.

Work with families and external agencies

Co-ordinate student mentoring

Be Responsible for coordinating and supporting the management of learning, academic progress and personal development of all pupils across year group.

Additionally, the Head of Year -Pastoral is responsible for developing the school ethos that supports and enhances pupil’s resilience, involvement and sense of belonging. This will ensure all pupils enjoy school life and fulfil their potential.

JOB DETAILS:

Job Title: Head of Year Pastoral – Year 10

Grade: 3C Points 32-35

Directly responsible to: Senior Leader Pastoral

Directly responsible for: Form Tutors

Main Contacts: Senior Leadership Team, Teaching staff, Pastoral Staff Including Home School Liaison Officer, Behaviour Provision Manager, Raising Aspirations and Careers Director. Outside Agencies, Parents and Careers.

Hours of Duty: 36 hours per week – additional hours will be required from time to time for parents evenings, Open Evening etc.

Summary of Role:

The main purpose of the post holder is to have responsibility for coordinating and supporting the management of learning, academic progress and personal development of all pupils across year group. Additionally, the Head of Year -Pastoral is responsible for developing the school ethos that supports and enhances pupil’s resilience, involvement and sense of belonging. This will ensure all pupils enjoy school life and fulfil their potential.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

To work with the other pastoral staff on issues of behaviour and attendance

To promote a whole school approach to developing and implementing policies and procedures to overcome obstacles to learning and improve participation in learning and school life.

Liaise with teaching staff to assess and provide particular support to targeted pupils to raise achievement and enable them to overcome barriers to learning.

Promote and exemplify the schools safeguarding policy.

In collaboration with the Behaviour Provision Manager manage pupil behaviour across the year groups.

In collaboration with the Attendance and Pupil Welfare Leader promote the whole school approach to attendance and devise strategies and action plans for pupils whose attendance is inadequate or falling.

Identify and assess the needs of those pupils requiring extra support. Develop individual action plans for targeted pupils and work with an allocated group as required.

Work with parents/carers to help address poor performance/attendance/behaviour. Undertake home visits with other pastoral staff and agencies to keep parents/carers informed and to secure positive family support.

Monitor the implementation of plans and report on progress achieved. Support the re-integration of pupils excluded from school or following an alternative timetable.

To monitor and evaluate the progress of pupils, taking appropriate action to ensure improved performance and achievement against agreed targets across the year.

To be a presence in and around the school and tutor group rooms at key times in the day and develop nurture groups (e.g. before and after school, break, lunchtime, tutor time).

To develop, coordinate and monitor systems of tutor/pastoral mentoring systems.

To support form tutors in order that they develop an effective role in mentoring, supporting and disciplining pupils in their groups.

To carry out investigations with students following incidents within/outside school and then to make suggestions as to the follow up action, in line with the schools Behaviour Policy.

To remain up to date with current practice in effective behaviour approaches by utilising online networks, contributing to local and national networks and reading widely so that the school's programme for behaviour management benefits from an up to date knowledge of best practice.

To then roll out these strategies in collaboration with the Behaviour Provision Manager to targeted students.

To provide information and advice to enable pupils to make choices about their own learning and behaviour.

To co-ordinate and co-operate with appropriate staff to ensure that support is obtained from a range of outside agencies, e.g. LA Behaviour Support Teams, Educational Psychologists, KS3 Strategy Team, Police and voluntary agencies so that the school makes best use of specialist advice and assistance in the support of its most vulnerable young people.

To co-ordinate and cooperate with appropriate staff to liaise with the LA Pupil Access team and local schools to facilitate Managed Transfers, In Fair Access and Termly Protocol requests.

To develop and monitor Pastoral Support Plans for individual pupils in conjunction with the relevant staff, outside agencies and with parents.

To implement and monitor the school’s policies and procedures with regard to pupil support, establishing processes to ensure accurate record keeping and information to the Head Teacher and to Governors.

To contribute to and encourage participation in assemblies and enrichment opportunities.

To coordinate and contribute to the daily management, supervision and development of the recovery room with the Behaviour Provision Manager.

To contribute to the management and supervision of detentions and on-call duties of pupils.

To cooperate with appropriate staff in preparing appropriate information as needed for any meetings regarding pupils, attendance and behaviour panels, exclusion or other meetings as necessary. E.g. producing and collating reports, statements, records etc…

In collaboration with appropriate staff develop and implement Student Assistance Programmes (self-help groups) within school across all year groups. Identifying specific areas to be covered within school e.g. self harm, self esteem, anger management and food issues.

To contribute with appropriate staff to organise and run the rewards policy.

To support transition activities and liaison with Primary schools in this respect.

Liaise with SLT and appropriate staff to facilitate the year 6 intake days & evenings, Open Evenings and parent evenings.

Support appropriate staff regarding prospective new pupils to the school

Support appropriate staff with post 16 and alternative providers. Other:-

Attend appropriate INSET and Twilight training sessions as directed as well as any evening events such as Parents Evenings, Open Evenings etc.

To undertake any other reasonable duties, as determined by the Headteacher commensurate with remuneration.

To work as part of the pastoral team to develop and foster a real sense and ethos of team work within this area of school.

To attend all relevant meetings as directed.

As a member of the Middle Leadership Team contribute to the development of policies relating to pastoral issues and advise other colleagues accordingly.

The nearest bus stop is just a short walk from the School and can be reached via several

different bus routes from most other parts of Manchester. The school is also located a

short walk away from the nearest train station, from which you can travel easily in to

Manchester City centre.

Location: Walkden High School is situated in South Walkden (Salford – Manchester) and serves the

suburbs of Worsley, Roe Green, Ellenbrook and Boothstown.

The school has excellent transport links making it easily accessible from both local and

surrounding areas. For anyone travelling by car, the school is only five minutes from the

motorway. Junction 14 on the M60 ring road is the closest exit, with easy access from the

M62, the M61 and the M602 and from the A580.
