Our GoalsOur tours are intended to be teaching and learn-ing experiences. In each tour, we work to:

describe how Salem changed over time to become the city it is today.

provide a clear examples of how geographical, political, economic and cultural events resulted in those historical changes.

show how the history of Salem is relevant to understanding the Salem of today.

We study history to better understand the present.History is best understood when told as a story.History is the story of how we came to be who we are today.

Our PhilosophyOur Instructional Walking Tours are founded upon three basic ideas:

How It WorksEach tour begins with some basic information about the history of Salem. Students will use this information to understand the tour.

We then embark upon on a fun, storied, 90 minute tour of Salem. Students connect places to specific people and events in Salem’s history.

The witch trials took 14 months. Salem’s history spans four centuries.

Rates 2006 Number of Students

8-15................... $6.50 per student16-25................. $5.50 per student26+.................... $5.00 per studentPrivate tours (7 or fewer) are $60.00

Up to three adult chaperones accompanying students may participate free of charge. If the number of people in your group exceeds 40, we may run multiple groups. Please call for details.

Tours will take place on cloudy days or in light drizzle. If weather is a concern, please call us on the morning of the tour. Group members are encouraged to dress for the weather, and to wear comfortable walking shoes.

The history of Salem is the history of the founding of America.

This 90 minute tour begins at The House of the Seven Gables and ends at the Peabody Essex Museum. (Or we can run it backwards if you want to finish at the Gables!) We will see the homes of some of Salem’s rich, famous, and notorious—and also see their final resting places at Salem’s oldest cemetery, the Burying Point. You will hear stories of privateers, millionaires, adventurers, and of course the innocent people accused of witchcraft. We will visit the historic waterfront where Salem’s journeys to the farthest ports of the rich east originated and see a replica sailing ship. Your group will be de -lighted with a view of Salem that can only be had by walking the paths of history.
