In the footsteps of Hans Christian

    Andersen

This walk takes you through the old part ofOdense where Hans Christian Andersen wasborn and raised. All over the city centre youwill nd works of art inspired by Andersensfairy tales as well as places he used to visit

himself please follow the route marked witha red line on the map.

The rst stop is in Jernbanegade at thesculpture The ying Trunk made in bronzeand granite by Jens Flemming Srensen.Immediately after you see the Grey FriarsConvent, which among other things containeda hospital when Hans Christian Andersen livedhere. Andersen often visited the hospitalwith his grandmother and played in the courtyard. The statue situated in the court yardillustrates King Christian III.

On your way to Kongens Have (Kings Garden)you pass Odense Theatre. Andersen was veryinuenced by the theatre in Odense, whichwas the only permanent theatre outsideCopenhagen in Andersens childhood. Heoften watched the plays and even performedin a few plays himself. Unfortunately, thetheatre Andersen loved so much, burneddown in 1922. This theatre is the current

    theatre in Odense.

In Kongens Have you pass Odense Slot (OdenseCastle) which used to be the presiding kingsresidence when in Odense. Andersensmother worked in the castle and we knowthat Andersen played with the crown prince(the later King Frederik VII) in the court yard.Today, the castle is closed to the public.

Turn right at the end of the castle and

continue through the arch way with the mainentrance to Sct. Hans Church. This churchis known for its beautiful interior and itsexterior medieval pulpit, which is still visibletoday as an open shutter in the church wall.

In 1805 on Easter Monday Hans ChristianAndersens christening was repeated in Sct.Hans Church (he had been christened athome right after his birth, which was quitecommon then because of the high rate of

    child death).

Following Nrregade you pass an oldmerchants house, Oluf Bagers Grd (1586), abeautiful example of a building you would ndin Odense at that time. When you enter theH.C. Andersen Quarter the look of the town

in Andersens time truly becomes apparent. Here, you nd the yellow corner house wherethe writer is believed to have been born -and which today provides the setting for thecompletely renovated H.C. Andersen Museum,a natural stop on your tour. If you have childrenwith you dont miss Fyrtjet (The Tinderbox a cultural house for children), which issituated right next to the museum. Regardless

of nationality children love this place and canspend hours playing in the fairy-tale universeof Hans Christian Andersen. In the summeryou can experience the H.C. Andersen ParadeShow for free in Lotzes Have (in front of themuseum) three times a day.

Follow the route to Sortebrdre Torv wherethe bronze sculpture Thumbelina madeby Lotte Olsen is situated. Continue toOvergade where you pass Odense City MuseumMntergrden. Notice the narrow street

just before the museum this illustratesperfectly how closely many of the houseswere placed when Andersen lived. In thebeginning of Paaskestrde you can see thebronze sculpture The Steadfast Tin Soldierby Eiler Madsen and shortly after you passFattigskolen (the Charity School) whereAndersen was a pupil. Next to Odense Riveris one of the places where women used to dotheir laundry. Continue to the Hans ChristianAndersen Garden (Eventyrhaven), where you

will nd Louis Hasselriis statue from 1888 ofthe writer. Here you can also see a sculptureof a paper boat made by Erik Heide. Thesculpture is oating on Odense River.

From the garden cross Klosterbakken andproceed to Munkemllestrde, where HansChristian Andersens childhood home issituated. In this house Andersen spent mostof his childhood with his mother and father.Nowadays we nd that the house is very small

but in the two other ats in the house lived 6-8 occupiers in each!

Last stop is Odense Cathedral (Sct. KnudsKirke) built in Gothic style. In this CathedralAndersen was conrmed in 1819. You canamong other things see the world famousalterpiece from 1521 by Claus Berg and themortal remains of Saint Knud and his brotherBenedikt. After the Cathedral you are back infront of the town hall where the walk started. This is also the location of the old town hallwhere H. C. Andersen the 6th December 1867

was appointed honorary member of Odense.
