Tayana S Charlotte S Jessica G Rebecca B Four times the Principal power On Thursday 29 November 2018, the Wakehurst Public School quads proudly shared the job of Principal for the day along with the ‘real’ Principal Mrs Caroline Desmond. Bailey, Ethan, Mitchell and Nate are all in Year 3, and their parents successfully bid for their children to become Principal for the day at a recent fundraising event. It was great sharing the expertise of the boys across the school. During the day they chose the new colour palette for our toilet blocks which are currently being refurbished, helped out in the Kindy and Year 1 classrooms and helped to choose the design for our new PSSA sports shirts. They also enjoyed handing out awards and stickers to other children. They enjoyed pizza lunch with a friend, morning tea in the staff room and got their names up in lights on the school’s electronic sign.

Student Toilet Block Upgrades Just an update on our student toilet blocks. The K-2 toilet block is nearly completed and will be finished on schedule by the end of this week. This means that the 3-6 toilet block upgrade will start next week, meaning that those toilets will be closed until the end of term. During this time students will be directed to the appropriate areas and all safe work practices will be followed. We are looking forward to having both upgraded blocks open and ready for the start of 2019. Presentation Day Assemblies On Thursday 13 December we will be holding our Presentation Day Assemblies in the school hall. Our assemblies will celebrate student achievements and we will also entertain the audience with musical and band performances.

Years 1-3 – 9:30 am – Thursday 13 December – Year 3 students performing and training band Years 4-6 – 11:40 am – Thursday 13 December –Year 5 students performing and concert band

It was lovely to attend the Kindergarten graduation yesterday, and I would like to commend our Kindergarten students and teachers on their amazing achievements and growth across the year. They are all now certainly ready to move into Year 1 in 2019. BYOD Parent Survey Thank you to the 133 parents who have completed our BYOD survey. In this survey 42% of parents indicated that they would like to see next steps taken to move towards the introduction of BYOD and 29% were unsure. As this equates to over 70% of our parents, so we will move next year to hold parent forums to provide additional information on what this process would look like if we decided to go ahead this this in terms of teaching, products, processes and professional learning. We also would like to give all community members their chance to have their questions answered. If less than 70% of the community then wish to proceed with BYOD then it will not be introduced. We look forward to open the communication and further address BYOD next year.

Drama Performances and Band Solo Night Thank you to Mrs Carden, Mrs Ducker and Miss Venteman for leading our drama groups this semester. It is great to be able to offer extra-curricular activities such as these. The drama group performances last Friday were excellent with all performances allowing students to show off their acting skills. Great work to our Training Band and Concert Band students who all played beautifully at the solo night. Well done everyone! Positive Behaviour for Learning

I would like to thank our students, teacher and community for embracing Positive Behaviour for Learning this year. It has been great to have a consistent message when reinforcing our expectations across all setting around the school. Over the last two weeks we will be again reminding students of our ‘All Settings’ expectations. Kind regards Caroline Desmond Principal

Years 3-6 News End of Year Arrangements Students in Stage 2 and 3 have received an outline of the arrangements for their last weeks of school. This outline includes important information regarding excursions and activities that have been planned at school. Please check this information carefully as it will guide all of the events that are happening both within and out of school. PSSA Competition Results PSSA has concluded for the year and I am pleased to announce the results for our teams in the following sports: • Junior A Boys T-Ball 3rd • Junior B Boys T-Ball 5th • Senior A Softball 5th • Senior B Softball 1st Warringah Zone Premiers • Junior Girls Cricket 3rd • Senior Girls Cricket 3rd Throughout the Term 3 and 4 the season our teams have trained enthusiastically and participated in all games with a high level of sportsmanship. This is always great to see, and even more special when we receive comments from opposing schools re the quality of our teams and their behavior and effort in the sporting arena. Well done, Wakehurst! Our coaches for cricket, softball and t-ball throughout the year (Mr Dickson and Mrs Mackie) also deserve our thanks as their dedication to training and managing their teams is evident weekly as they participate in the competitions. Thank you all, your time and dedication to providing these opportunities to our students is much appreciated. Borrowed PSSA equipment….If you are yet to hand in any equipment that has been borrowed from the school, including softball gloves or PSSA shirts that have the number 11 on the back, please return them to Ms Fox as soon as possible. This is very important and we do need to have all equipment and shirts that we have lent out returned as soon as they are finished with. Trish Fox – Assistant Principal

Years K-2 News The Kindergarten Graduation was such a special afternoon- for the students, parents and staff. It has been a delight to observe the rapid growth in each and every student and take the time on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate and honour this and all their achievements. Thank you, to you, the parents, for supporting them through their first year of school, it sure is a huge milestone for you also! The finale was a tissue moment with the beautiful song We Can Make a Difference.

2019 Swimming Carnival Entries and Parent Helpers – entries close tomorrow Entries for students for the 2019 Swimming Carnival will close tomorrow. Marshal sheets for the carnival will be posted early next week on the windows of the 3/4F classroom for students to check. It is important that students take the time to check their entries this year to ensure the smooth running of the carnival on the first day back of school for 2019. Just a reminder that our swimming carnival is for all students in Years 3-6 and those students in Year 2 who are turning 8 in 2019 and can capably swim 50m. Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered to assist on the day, your help is very much appreciated. We look forward to seeing you at 11:45am at Manly Swim Centre on Wednesday 30 January 2019! Trish Fox – Swimming Carnival Organiser

Library News

NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge Congratulations to the 304 students who completed the PRC challenge. They will receive their awards in library this week. Well done! This year 13 students received their Platinum Award for completing seven years of the challenge. They have each read over 170 books during their time at primary school. Platinum Award Winners Nathan B, Hailey C, Thomas C, Charlie C, Will D, Grace F, Matilda M, Hayden M, Koji M, Addison P, Stella V, Austin W, Freddy Y Collaborative Research Project At the end of last term, Year 3 students chose topics of interest and posed some tricky questions

that they would like answered about the particular subject. This formed the basis for the Stage 3 students Collaborative Research Project. The students had to research a wide variety of topics and answer questions. For example, how big is the world’s largest pizza? How many breeds of chickens are there? Who is the CEO of VW? Who was the first Principal of WPS? This week the Stage 3 students took their Year 3 student partner on an information journey. They demonstrated how to look up books using the library catalogue, the location of these books and the information appropriate to the questions.

The students also searched appropriate websites to access the information. The Stage 3 students organised this information into a Google Slide presentation. Some students then used Google forms to make an online quiz about their topic.

Not only did we learn some amazing facts, the Stage 3 students said that they gained confidence in learning how to access print and digital resources more effectively in preparation for high school.

Congratulations Stage 3 students on such an amazing effort. Book Club The final book club for the year was handed out last week. Thank you to all the parents that ordered books through the LOOP system. I hope you found it easy to use and will continue supporting your school library in this way.

Library Stocktake If your child has any overdue library books at home, we would really appreciate you sending them back to the library as soon as possible. At the end of the stocktake, we will request payment for any overdue library books. Catherine Lindsay - Teacher Librarian

Primary Ethic Volunteers – Urgently Needded THINK | REASON | DISCUSS It’s been a terrific year for our children at WPS in 2018, with Ethics classes being held for Years 1-4 for the whole year covering interesting and thought-provoking topics such as Pride, Laziness, Sharing, Courage, Bragging and Diversity. Our two volunteer teachers have taken double classes (back to back) to ensure that some classes didn’t miss out. However, unfortunately we have had to cancel 2 classes (Years 5 and 6) as one of our wonderful long-term Volunteers, Helene, moved interstate mid year. Also this year, our Kindies didn’t get to take Ethics as we didn’t have enough teachers. We’re now 3 teachers short which means that several classes will unfortunately have to be cancelled for 2019. If being a Primary Ethics teacher appeals to you, or you are keen to get involved to ensure that your child continues the program, then please go to the PE website www.primaryethics.com.au for more information or call our Coordinator, Amanda on 0403 757 134.

Canteen News The last day of canteen for 2018 will be Friday 14 December. The canteen will re-open on Thursday 31 January, 2019 (the day after the Swimming Carnival). Many Thanks Kate Read – Canteen Manager

Thank you I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported the canteen and myself over the last five years. Firstly to Nimisha and the P & C who do so much for the school behind the scenes and have been a wonderful support to me. Secondly, to Sarah Burns, our amazing treasurer, we have worked together for a few years now and there’s nothing she can’t do!! To Mrs Desmond and all the wonderful staff, and lastly and most importantly to all the parents who give up their time so generously to help run the canteen. We wouldn’t have a functioning canteen without you, so THANK YOU again!! I was presented with lovely gifts last night, so unnecessary but very much appreciated, thank you all. I’m leaving the school with a lot of fun memories and wonderful friends, and so grateful for all the opportunities we have had over the years at WPS. Wishing all our year sixers the best of luck as they move onto their next adventure in high school. And a very Merry Christmas to all, enjoy the holidays and time with the family xx Many thanks Rebecca Chappelow

Share the Dignity Handbag Drive Update

I would like to thank all of the generous people who donated handbags filled with wonderful products and gift certificates for the marginalised women in our community. Homelessness is a real problem here on the Northern Beaches, and the distribution of these gifts to women living in unfortunate circumstances will be greatly appreciated.

I took 18 handbags to the collection centre! Thank you to parents, staff and friends who will make such a difference to 18 women’s lives this Christmas.

Best Wishes,

Sue Docker
