WAITE PARK COMMUNITY SCHOOL IS YOUR SCHOOL

Dear Waite Park Families: Welcome to Waite Park Community School, home of the Wildcats. At our school, we’ve created a unique atmosphere—what we refer to as “the Waite Park Way”—built on the practice of treating one another with dignity and respect. Our dedicated and experienced teachers take tremendous pride in our school culture and provide an exemplary learning experience for all students. In addition to our exceptional academic program, safety is also a priority. During the year we will complete all required safety drills that prepare us for various types of emergencies. Communication is also important to the success of our school, and we strongly believe in open and inten-tional dialogue between all stakeholders. We strive to keep you informed of all the “happenings” during the school year with clear and frequent communication, and as always, we welcome and encourage your feedback. It is with great enthusiasm and excitement we welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year!

Sincerely,

Rochelle McGinness, Principal

Waite Park PTA

Greetings from the Waite Park PTA!

We would like to welcome back returning families and extend a special welcome to new families!

The PTA Board has been busy planning some great events that will take place throughout the 2019-2020 school year. You can find a list of planned events on our PTA blog: http://waiteparkpta.blogspot.com

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is an organization of parents and teachers whose goal is to support the education of all students at Waite Park by being involved in our children’s education through service, oversight, fundraising and creating strong parent, teacher and community networks in support of the school. We also seek to enrich the education of our children by providing resources in support of educational opportunities outside traditional classroom activities.

Joining the PTA is a great way to get involved, meet other families and make a difference in your child’s school. PTA meetings are open to everyone. For the PTA to be effec-tive and truly representative of the school, it is essential to have parent, teacher and community involvement. Please consider volunteering, it really does make a difference in the lives of our children! We welcome your ideas and your energy, and we look forward to meeting and hopefully working with you this year!

Safety Routines

Students must always be supervised by an adult while at school. To ensure someone is available to do this, no students should arrive at school prior to 9:00 a.m. All doors will remain locked until 9:00 am. Students will not be allowed into the building before 9:00 a.m. Only Doors #1 & #23 will be unlocked at 9:00 am for student arrival. Walkers should not arrive at their designated crosswalks until 8:55, as this is the time patrols will begin crossing students.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS: The patrols will NOT be out at the crosswalks when the temperature

reaches –10° and/or if the wind chill factor is –20°.

Patrols are at these corners: Johnson & 34th, Ulysses & back parking lot, Ulysses & Garfield, 34th & Ulysses and 34th & Hayes.

When dropping off your student, please do not park where the buses are unloading students (on 34th Avenue between Ulysses Street and the driveway to our main entrance). Morning drop off is on Ulysses Street.

Pick-up The safety of your child/ren is extremely important to us. If you need to pick up your child early, they must be signed out in the office. Anyone picking up a student must show identification before we release the child if we do not recognize them. If you have an extenuating circumstance and you need someone who is not listed on the emergency card to pick up your child, please inform the office in writing. If you are picking up your child at the end of the school day, on a regular basis, please park on Ulysses Street facing North and have your family number on the passenger side visor. Students will come out to the vehicle. Cars will move up in line as children are picked up and cars depart. All students MUST be picked up by 3:45 pm.

Change of Address/Phone Number Families who change addresses or telephone numbers need to give this new information to the school office as soon as possible.

Change of Bus For One Day Only When riding a different bus, the child needs a note from home with a date and parent signature. The parent of the student with whom the child is going also needs to send a note to school. The student must deliver the note to the teacher in the morning so the proper arrangements can be made. Your child will be given a temporary boarding pass. We are unable to make any transportation changes after 2:30 pm.

Bicycles/Skate Boards/Heelys Please do not ride skateboards or wear rollerblades to school during school hours. Heelys are not allowed. Wheels must be removed if worn to school. If your child is riding a bicycle to school, please review and sign the bike riding policy. If rules are not followed, the student will not be able to ride his/her bike to school.

Field Trips

Field trips are an important part of our school program. Students must have a signed permission slip or note from parents giving the student permission to go on a trip. Parent cooperation is important to ensure that students participate in these valuable experiences. Some field trips may involve a nominal fee. Students will not be denied the opportunity to participate because they cannot afford it. Parents should contact the teacher concerning field trip scholarships.

Dress Code

Due to current fashion trends, we have established guidelines for dress in order to promote a positive learning environment.

Head wear: No hats, no kerchiefs/bandanas. Pants: Please wear a belt with loose fitting pants. NO underwear showing. Shorts/Skirts: Must be fingertip length (mid-thigh). Measurement is made by holding arms straight down to the side. Shirts: No tummies showing. Tank tops straps must be the width of two fingers.

Only POSITIVE messages on clothing!!

Attendance Policy

Minneapolis Public Schools recognizes that daily attendance is critical to academic achievement. Our goal is for students to attend school 95% of the time. We expect every student to attend school and class on time every day. A student cannot have more than 3 unexcused absences per year. *Letters go home after 3 unexcused absences, no matter when they add up. Research shows an unquestionable link between student attendance and achievement. Students who attend school 95% to 100% of the time pass state reading and math tests at much higher rates than students who attend school less than 95% of the time. What Counts as Excused Absences:

Illness

Religious holidays when the school is notified in advance

Recognized cultural observances when the school is notified in advance

Funeral or other family emergency for up to 3 days

Family activity for up to five days when arranged with the school in advance

Transportation problems caused by failure of MPS transportation system

Appointments with health care providers or other professionals with a note from provider

Severe weather when school is notified No matter what the age of the student, families play an important role in making sure their student is in school. Under state law, parents of children in kindergarten through age 11 are legally responsible for their child’s school attendance. If children from kindergarten through age 11 do not meet the district’s 95% attendance goal, the parents are in violation of the state law on compulsory education. If the child continues to be absent after appropriate intervention has occurred, the school will make a referral to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. Students who are late must come into the Main Office and receive a pass to the classroom. Students who arrive after 11:00 a.m. will be considered absent for 1/2 day.

Homeless or Highly Mobile

Unfortunately, sometimes our Waite Park families find themselves in difficult living situations. If your family is staying in an emergency shelter or motel, temporarily doubled up, or moving frequently, your student may be considered homeless or highly mobile by law. If your family is homeless or highly mobile, your child has a right:

To immediately enroll in school.

To continue at the same school if transportation is feasible.

To attend special programs and afterschool activities.

To automatically qualify for free lunch at school.

To have free school supplies.

To receive needed services as all other students.

When enrolling your child in school, you do not need to immediately provide proof of residency, immunization records, birth certificate, or previous school records.

Volunteers

Waite Park Community School wants to encourage families to become involved in their children’s education. We value the relationship that a school and family form as they work together to be sure that each child grows and learns. Every relationship increases each child’s opportunity for success. There are a number of ways to become involved. Please contact Amanda Muenzner at 612-668-1600 or the PTA to find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you.

Lost and Found

Please clearly mark your child’s name on belongings. A lost and found bench is near the office in the hallway; please encourage your child to check there if any belongings are missing. For small items like watches, jewelry and keys, your child should check in the office.

NOTE: Please do not bring valuables to school, as these items are not insured by the school if broken, lost or stolen.

Health Procedures

It is very important that you have a plan for care of your child when you are not at home during the school day. In addition to the parents’ name, we must have at least two local names and numbers to contact in case of emergency or illness. The Health Assistant, or other designated adult who works at school, will call your home or work if an emergency should arise. If we are unable to reach you we will: 1. Call other persons listed on the student’s Emergency card. 2. Call the doctor on the student’s Emergency card (if needed). 3. Send your child to the emergency room (if needed). If a phone number on the emergency card changes, contact the school office to let us know of the new number. Please keep your child home if they have a fever of 100 degrees or over or if they are vomiting or have diarrhea. They should be fever free for 24 hours (without the use of fever reducing medication) before they return to school. In addition, if your child shows any symptoms of illness such as nausea, sore throat, rash, etc., please keep him/her home until you can determine how serious the condition may be. This will help lower the spread of infections to your child’s classmates and to the staff.

Immunizations Minnesota immunization law requires children enrolled in an MPS school to prove they have been immunized against certain diseases, allowing for certain legal exceptions. You may call the Health Office for further information regarding these requirements. These diseases continue to have potentially serious complications. Please keep a permanent record of your child’s shots and send updated information to school.

Health Screening Screening is done for vision and hearing at various grade levels. The purpose is to identify students who may have health problems needing further evaluation. It is not meant to replace the regular physical examinations.

Medication Any medication, prescription and over-the-counter, given by school staff requires a complete medical consent form signed by the physician and

parents. You may obtain a form from the School Health Assistant. Consent forms must be received each school year. Ask your pharmacist for an extra labeled container for school doses, so medication for the school day remains in the Health Office. A Parent/Guardian must bring the medication to school. We will not accept any medication from students.

Contagious Conditions It is important to let the school know of any contagious condition, such as strep throat, mumps, chicken pox, head lice, impetigo, or scabies that your child may develop. This information helps us to take appropriate measures to help protect other students. You may reach the school Health Office by calling 612-668-1600.

EL Translations

As we tighten our budget, we need to make sure that we are using our Bilingual Associate Educators to work with students. We will not be able to have them pulled from student instruction or lunch duty during the school day unless it is an emergency. Please call the main office at 612-668-1600 for assistance. They will be available to help with school-related issues. Please remember if a student is absent to call the Attendance Line at 612-668-1615.

Food Policy

The decision to serve foods in the classroom as part of the curriculum shall be made by the teacher. Food shall not be served as a reward, incentive or as part of a personal celebration whether prepared by the teacher, student or student’s family, or commercially prepared, unless the food served is part of a student’s IEP (Individual Education Plan) or IAP

(Individual Accommodation Plan).

Waite Park Community School offers free and reduced lunch depending on income and free breakfast. An application for free or reduced-cost meal will be mailed home from the Nutrition Center. Or you can complete it online at www.schoolmealapp.com. Be sure to fill out all of the required sections. Students may eat school lunch or bring a bag lunch from home. Milk may be purchased in the lunchroom. For the safety of our students with food allergies, students are not allowed to share food. Also, if your child brings a lunch from home, please make sure food is sent in individual portions and do not send candy, soda or sugary drinks with students. MPS does not provide chocolate milk.

School menus are available online at http://nutritionservices.mpls.k12.mn.us. If you have questions about the breakfast or lunch program, please call our Food Service Manager at 612-668-1600.

Breakfast will be free for all students.

The price for lunch will be free for students who qualify, and $2.40 for full-paying students.

Milk purchased separately is $.50 per carton.

Gym Shoes

Gym shoes are needed for Physical Education. Please be sure your child has gym shoes at school on Physical Education days.

Curfew and Truancy Center

Minneapolis has instituted a curfew and truancy center. This facility is used to hold students who have been picked up for violation of the truancy and/or curfew laws.

Students who are not in school during scheduled days may be picked up by the police and brought to the center for processing. The Truancy Center staff will attempt to contact parents and will contact the school. For further information, contact our school Social Worker, Kelly Watson Ostroot, at 612-668-1600.

Emergency School Closing School will be open every school day unless transportation facilities are disabled by blizzards, heavy snow or ice. In this event, an announcement will be made before 5:30 a.m. on local radio and television stations and our district website (mpls.k12.mn.us). WCCO radio (830 AM) provides school closing information during bad weather. The District will also notify families by automated phone calls and text messaging. Please be sure your contact information is correct in the school office. If weather is severe, we ask you to use your own judgment about sending your child to school. Age of the child and special health problems should be considered. Remember to plan for longer waits at the bus stop during bad weather and dress the children warmly.

In the event of a mechanical failure which prevents us from opening school for a day, the information will be provided by the same media sources.

Recess

Students are provided a recess or activity period daily. Please send your child with the appropriate clothes for the weather. Students are expected to go outside if the weather permits. If the wind chill temperature is zero or below zero, or if the weather is inclement, students will remain indoors for this period.

The Home and School Are Partners In Education

Education of your child requires teamwork between home and school. Both have responsibilities to carry out if a child is to become a successful learner.

The school has responsibilities to carry out in educating your child. They are:

1. To provide an educational program that will be challenging and motivating while keeping the basic skills as the central focus.

2. To foster development of the skills and citizenship that are needed for living in our changing society.

3. To maintain a safe school.

As parents you also have responsibilities to carry out in educating your child. They are:

1. To make sure that your child comes to school daily and on time, unless s/he is sick, you are observing a religious holiday or there is a family emergency.

2. To make sure that your child gets enough sleep each night, so s/he is rested for school the next day.

3. To see that your child is dressed appropriately for school. 4. To have a place at home where your child can do homework

and read (free from the TV and other distractions).

Visitors Parents are welcome and are encouraged to visit the school. All visitors must check in at the office and receive a visitor’s tag. All visitors must enter through Door #1 (main entrance) on the 34th St. side of the building. Please make arrangements with the classroom teacher for a visit.

Parents Are the Key to Student Achievement

Communicating with our families is very important at Waite Park Community School. The following are some of the ways we try to maintain contact on a regular basis.

Please remind your child to bring school information home. If you would like to receive weekly updates by e-mail, please visit our webpage to sign up. Also, “Like” our Facebook page for news and updates. Waite Park Community School will post the Wildcat Newsletter on the school website monthly.

Conferences In the fall, during the first report period, you will be invited to attend a parent/teacher conference about your child. It is important that you come to the conference, hear how well your child is doing in school, learn how to help with your child’s progress, and get to know your child’s teacher(s). During the conference teachers will work with parents/guardians to develop a Continuous Learning Plan (CLP) for each student. You will be asked to share your concerns and assist in developing a plan to meet those needs. This is a very important conference to attend. There will be another opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher during winter conferences. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher by calling the main office at 612-668-1600.Online sign-up will be available for each conference.

Important Test Taking Tips for

Parents and Students

Testing can create anxiety in some students. Your involvement in your child’s education and your extra attention to their needs during these important test days is especially important! You can help your child do their best on these tests by:

Making sure they get enough sleep the night before each test so they are not tired in the morning.

Have them eat a good breakfast the morning of each test (healthful foods are highly recommended; for example—high protein foods, cereals, toast, muffins and fruit). Avoid high sugar foods such as candy bars, donuts and cookies so they have enough energy to last until lunch!

They should be dressed comfortably but appropriately.

Get them to school on time!
