HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONY: Tony Watling enjoys the surprise party that was arranged by the crew at Tihei Rangitahi.
By Aaron Meredith
Resident poet and chess master Tony Watling turned 90 last week and the children at Tihei Rangatahi threw him a celebration.
In what came as a massive surprise for the Wainuiomata stalwart, a party was thrown to celebrate the milestone at the Community Centre last Thursday.
Tony is a regular contributor to the Wainuio-mata News and his popular odes appear in the paper each week. He has also twice written books of poetry.
Tony is also a member of Wainuiomata Grey-power, a life member of the medical centre and is involved in numerous other community events and projects.

In Wainuiomata there is an extremely large population of Kereru, Native New Zealand Wood Pigeon, and now DOC wants to know how many there are.
The great kereru count was set up so everyone can get a better understand-ing of kereru numbers across the country.
“It is an annual citizen science project and the more people who par-ticipate, the better the understanding we will get of how kereru are doing,” say organisers.
“Over a number of years we will be able to build a picture of kereru num-bers as well as behaviour, This will help to develop information on how
best to protect kereru and help us understand how we can all get involved to help kereru numbers grow.”
Kereru are known as the gardener of the skies, as they are the only bird left alive that is able to swallow and disperse seeds for the country’s largest native trees.
In Wainuiomata it’s not uncommon to see these birds on the power lines, or hear them fl ying over you, as the noise of their wings fl apping is quite loud.
Kereru can live up to 21 years, and authorities say that their disappearance would be a disaster for our native forests.
Local man Steve Healey says that he loves seeing the birds around the valley and regularly sees them in his backyard.
“They are always fl oating around the trees in my backyard, they are a lovely sight all throughout the year.”
If you want to participate head to the website http://greatkererucount.nz/ and register every kereru that you see.

having Tony there on a Thursday, where he helps the children learn how to play chess, says Taina Keelan, who helps run the youth group.
“We really appreciate and enjoy hav-ing [him] down here every week, all the children really enjoy it as well.”
At the party the group spoiled Tony with presents, before singing happy birthday to him. Everyone then dug into the massive cake that was bought.
Tony says he wasn’t expecting the celebration at all and in a speech to the children he explained how he enjoyed spending time with the group.
He explained how proud he was to be part of the Wainuiomata community for 45 years.
“I am amazed I made it to 90, I retired 30 years ago, and I thought then, that’s it for me, but I’m still going strong.”
“We have a great community here, I’m very proud to be here in Wainuiomata.”

Construction of the Wainuio-mata summit bridge is nearing its fi nal phase, with installation of the bridge structure set for the start of October.
The 43m long structure is being constructed in Napier and will be transported in three parts. Installation is scheduled for the early hours of 1 Oc-tober, with a back-up date of 2 October for poor weather.Wainuiomata bound traf-fi c will be down to one lane from 7pm on 30 September
for the set-up of the crane. There will be a complete road closure in both direc-tions from 12.30am-1.30am on 1 October, while the bridge is lifted into position. There will be no vehicle access over the hill during this time, ex-cept for emergency vehicles.Notice has been issued via the electronic signage at both ends of the Wainuiomata Hill Road and on the Council website.Divisional Manager Road and Traffi c says, “We are aiming for
minimal disruption and we ap-preciate people’s understanding.“The project is near its com-pletion and we’re looking forward to seeing the improve-ment to walk and cycle ac-cess between Wainuiomata and the wider Hutt Valley.”The new bridge is a pierless over-road walkway designed to provide a safe and acces-sible place for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the busy Wainuiomata Hill Road.About 70 percent of the onsite
work is now complete, with the foundation and earthworks ready for the installation of the bridge and connection to cycle and walk tracks. The construction of the bridge is phase one in the Wainuio-mata cycleway project, which received $1.5m from the Gov-ernment's $100 million urban cycleway fund. The project will provide a shared cycling and pedestrian path connecting Wainuiomata with the wider Hutt Valley.

A disappointing showing at a tournament just days before the New Zealand Poker Nationals nearly cost Jay Gilbert his shot at the title, until a phone call and a last minute fl ight changed everything.
Jay was crowned the New Zealand Poker Champion after winning the main event at the tournament in Christchurch last month.
The main event, which Jay took out, involved over 130 participants and the tourna-ment lasted for 27 hours over two days.
The event was the flagship occasion of the nine day series, which was held at Christchurch Casino, and attracted players from all around the world.
Jay says after playing poorly at the beginning of the series, he decided to throw in the towel and caught a fl ight back home to Wainuiomata.
“I was disgusted with the way I played.
“I then gave a team mate a ring and told him, and he con-
WINNERS: Jay Gilbert and Jack Efaramio both won titles at the National Poker Championships in Christchurch last month.

vinced me to fl y back. I caught a fl ight at the last minute.”
The first day Jay returned to the competition the cards started to fall his way. His lucky streak continued and Jay was able to claim his first major victory.
Jay has been playing poker for almost a decade and is a
member of the Petone Working Men’s Club Poker Team, which is considered the stronghold of poker in the Wellington region.
Another member from the same team, Jack Efaramio, also took away a title, winning the South Island Champs during the same nine day series.
It was Jack that convinced Jay
to head back to Christchurch and continue to compete in the tournament.
The pair say the now plan to enter the Aussie Millions tournament.
If they impress they may get the chance to go to Las Vegas, to participate in the World Series of Poker.

Wainuiomata community con-tributor Carmel, from Pukea-tua Primary School, has been selected as The Warehouse’s Community Hero for Region Three for 2015.
She wins a $500 gift card at The Warehouse for her com-munity organisation, and is one of nine regional recipients of the award throughout New Zealand.
The awards are an annual ac-knowledgement by the company of outstanding contributions to the community. Recipients are selected from commu-nity groups that are part of The Warehouse’s Bags for Good programme, which involves proceeds from sales of ten cent plastic bags sold at checkouts being donated to community
organisations in each store’s neighbourhood.
Clifford Buchler, Regional Manager for The Warehouse says: “This is one of the tough-est decisions to make each year, given how much great community work goes on in partnership with our stores. Carmel stood out and, on behalf of our community, may I extend
our thanks for all her efforts.” Carmel says, “This is an ac-
knowledgement for every per-son who contributes to Pukeatua Primary School. We appreciate The Warehouse’s strong support for community work in our area, and it’s great to see The Warehouse acknowledging community contributions in this way.”

Wainuiomata resident Rob Cameron has once again produced the top boneless ham in the country.
The gold award is the third time in the last four years that Rob has won the award, and says it is down to the consist-ently high quality products they produce.
“We have a high attention to detail, and we don’t cut any corners with our products,” he says.
“It took years of perfecting, to get the recipe just right.”
Rob is one of the owners of Cameron Harrison butcheries which have two stores, in Ngaio and Kelburn.
He has a warehouse in Wai-nuiomata, where he cuts and makes sure all the meat is up to standard before it heads into Wellington to be sold.
Rob says the feedback from their regular customers is great, and is something they work hard at.
“In my mind a butchery is where a customer comes in, orders a meat cut and we sort it for them, that is what it is like,” he says.
“We also sell different items
in store as well, like milk, soft drinks, it is kind of like a general store as well.”
Rob is now setting his sights on the upcoming Christmas season, and is ready for eve-ryone’s orders.
“What you order is exactly the winning ham, even the ham with the bone in it is an award winning ham, we won gold last year with that one,” he says.
Hams can be bought from both the Ngaio and Kelburn stores, New World in Thorn-don and at Moore Wilsons.

Wainuiomata played host to the Tough Guy and Gal challenge last week.
The event was held at Camp Wai-nui and spread over three days, with competitors challenging themselves through water trails, under barbed wire obstacles, swamp crossings and anything else that organisers
could throw at them. The Wainuiomata Pioneer Church
were asked to supply some marshals for the event, and with huge support from the community provided enough to cover the 83 stations at the event.
Joyce Lockyer from the Pioneer Church says it was thanks to mem-bers of the community, there was such a good turnout.
“It is testament to the support which the Pioneer Church has in Wainuiomata as many of our helpers took leave from work to help, actually delayed leaving for holiday, persuaded their friends and neighbours into helping,” she says.
“The Pioneer Church committee are very grateful to all who helped in this great fundraiser for their restoration.”

Wainuiomata youth are about to get the chance to celebrate who they are, with a youth festival being planned for next March.
The group’s vision is to make the youth be the driving force behind the project.
Dawn McKinley says that the current group is just the steering group.
“We want to empower younger
people, so they can celebrate their achievements and talent,”
With the Wainuiomata water festi-val being held biannually the group decided that this youth festival would fi ll in the gap.
Councillor Margaret Willard says that they want to strengthen the connections between all youth.
Other members of the group agree and say this is a great chance for the youth to enjoy being youth.
“It is important to provide the space for Rangitahi to be Rangitahi,” they say.
The current plan is to hold a Wainuio-mata’s got talent type of thing, and they say talent can be anything.
Singing, dancing, everything is encouraged, all the organisers want is for people to take part and have a good time.
Anyone who is interested can contact the group via a facebook page which will be created soon.

Dear Ed, I have read your article, asking what makes a legend, and I be-lieve a legend, not just on the sporting fi eld, can be anyone.
That person does not have to be a winner, they do not have to be great, they just
have to be a tireless worker.I believe that we have
many legends in our com-munity, not just on the sporting fi eld, but in eve-ryday life.
Those in the Fire Brigade, for risking their lives to save our own, the police
for keeping us safe, to com-munity workers for striving for the best in our town.
I know that it was a sports column, so I thought I would point out some of the community heroes.

Local man receives fashion scholarship
Jerome Taylor and 19 other students from NZ Fashion Tech have been awarded Prime Minis-ter’s Scholarships for Asia, giving them an opportunity to travel to India for 5 weeks of internation-ally based learning. In the fi rst stage of a unique New Zealand / India education collaboration, ten stunning looks designed and made from hand-loomed Indian silk saris by Diploma students at NZ Fashion Tech as part of their academic course work opened four Resene-sponsored public shows at New Zealand Fashion Week.
And in the second stage of the collaboration, 20 Diploma students from NZ Fashion Tech’s Auckland and Wellington cam-puses, will prepare to travel to India in November for another career-defi ning opportunity.
Academic Director of NZ Fash-ion Tech, Val Marshall-Smith says: “This year the design brief from our tutors and Resene en-couraged students to let their imaginations run wild and we’re delighted with their work. The brief was created in the form of a storybook and it took the students on an imaginary journey from the confi nes of a ‘virtual unreality’ set in a future time, to a colourful, mystical, wondrous place.”

On Thursday October 15, the entire country is practicing what to do in a major earthquake.
ShakeOut is a chance for all New Zealanders to learn what to do if a major earthquake hits.
Civil Defence has organised the event and believes it is crucial for the entire country to use, especially after the events in Christchurch.
“New Zealand ShakeOut is a chance for all of us to learn more about the earthquake hazards in our area, check our plans at home and at work, and make sure we have emergency survival items,” says Director of Civil Defence Emer-gency Management Sarah Stuart-Black.
New Zealand is situated on the fault
line between the Australian Indian and the Pacific Plates, we have multiple earthquakes a day.
Wellington is known to have many earthquakes a day, and we should all be prepared for when the big one hits the region.
People from all over the country have signed up, with schools and businesses the main target for Civil Defence, al-though everyone should participate.
“It is important that everyone knows that when a quake hits they should drop, cover and hold.”
More information on New Zealand ShakeOut can be found at www.shakeout.govt.nz,www.facebook.com/nzgetthru and https://twitter/nzgetthru

The Wainuiomata Library has got behind the All Blacks and the World Cup, setting up a display on the All Blacks and having fl ags of the nations hung up.
Although not as big as the last World Cup, many businesses around Wai-nuiomata are getting behind the teams.
Many of the locals are behind the tournament as well, with some putting fl ags on their cars and showing off their pride for whatever nation they are from.
“It is great to see the different people supporting different countries, I never knew some people in the community were not kiwis,” says one local Tina Warmon.
“My neighbours have put out South African fl ags, and I have seen fl ags from the Pacific Island Nations, I haven’t seen the South African fl ags since Sunday morning though.”
In the last world cup, the country was awash with colours, but due to the time of the games, the impact of the world cup hasn’t hit as hard as previously.
“I think if the games weren’t through the middle of the night, there would be more people watching them and people would be even more into it,” says Tina.
“Or maybe once the All Blacks get into it more it will take off, but we can’t expect it to be massive when it is on the other side of the world.”

Konini Primary School proved to be the best at Rippa Rugby in the valley, after not only winning, but holding both spots in the fi nal.
The tournament was held at Wainuiomata High School, and 14 teams from all the primary schools around the valley took part.
The teams played seven games in total throughout the day, which everyone agreed was a lot of games for everyone.
Wainuiomata Rugby Club CCO
Mike Kenworthy says it was im-pressive to see the children take part in so many games.
“It was a long day for you all, so well done for playing so much,” he says.
He also gave the schools 12 rugby balls each, which were sponsored by the Wainuiomata Rugby Club and Wellington Rugby.
Students in the High School’s sports academy, also helped run the day, they also spent four weeks coaching the students in the buildup to the event.
Konini Primary School Prin-cipal Andrea Scanlan says that it was great to see the students running the tournament.
“They have all the skills to do it, so they didn’t really need the teachers there.”
The top three teams on the day were Konini One who placed fi rst, Konini Two placed second, and Arakura One who placed third.
All the rest of the students all had a great time playing though, and went back to their schools absolutely knackered.

Japan shakes up the rugby world
Konini reigns supreme at Rippa Tournament
WINNERS: The two teams from Konini Primary School, who nished rst and second in the interschool tournament last week.
The Rugby World Cup start-ed off boring, but that all changed thanks to Japan, when they defeated the Springboks. It is only the second win Ja-pan has ever achieved in the Rugby World Cup after beating Zimbabwe in 1991, and the rst time they have beaten South Africa. In actual fact, it was the rst time they have played South Africa in an o cial test match, so South Africa has never beaten Japan. How many times can a country say they have never lost to the Spring-boks.To put Japan’s win into perspective, most New Zea-landers remember the 1995 Rugby World Cup, in which the All Blacks beat Japan 145-17, and then we lost to South Africa in the Final. In 20 years Japan has gone from being thumped by over 100 points by a top nation, to now - where they can com-pete and even beat a top nation. So much for the Paci c Island Nations being the sleeping giants of Rugby, Japan is now, and they deserve to be feared
in this sport. For years Japan has domi-nated Asia, without being able to foot it with a team with any physical stature. An example of this is where they can beat a side like the Chinese Taipei by 155-3. And then lose to Samoa by around 50 points, this doesn’t hap-pen anymore.Japan competes in the Pa-cific Rugby Championship, they regularly beat the North American sides, they com-pete with and beat the Paci c nations. They have been ranked as high as ninth in the world recently, and hold ambitions of making it to the knockout stages of this World Cup.If they achieve this, they may even have a chance of win-ning the next cup, which they host in 2019.I understand that South Af-rica may have had a terrible game, but 4 years ago, South Africa having a terrible game against Japan still would have ended in a comfortable win for the Boks.So welcome to the Rugby World Japan, let’s hope you stay a very long time.

Wainuiomata had an amazing season of winter sports this year, with the High School dominat-ing the results.
A win for the First XV, multiple grade wins in netball, fi nals all over the place in all sorts of sports, and students making rep squads, what a year.
In senior sports, the Hockey Club dominated their competi-tion, they were promoted during the season, and still won their grade.
What is the most amazing thing about this, is that this is
the fi rst year that the club had a senior side in 20 years.
The side was made up of a mix of high school students and seasoned veterans, they now are looking to form a second team, and be promoted again.
The League club can say they had a successful year, their premier side made it to the grand fi nal, going down to a strong and determined Te Aroha side.
The Senior 1st side, the Indig-enous Lions swept to a victory in their grade, dominating the Grand Final in their grade.
The Football and Rugby clubs had solid if not spectacular sea-
sons. Most of the football teams fi nished mid table, the top side will be disappointed after such a strong start at the beginning of the season.
The rugby club had one shin-ing light on the season, their womens team.
The side won their grade and set a record along the way, destroying Johnsonville 188-0.
The harriers had a successful season, and there were many successes in all sorts of junior sports.
So now it’s time for the summer season, lets hope that it is as successful as winter was.

Wainuiomata High School Teacher Daiji Kataoka says the result of the Japanese rugby team bought him to tears on Sunday morning.
Japan upset South Africa 34-32 in England on Sunday morning.
“I woke up on Sunday morning looking at the re-sult on the facebook, and I thought I was still dream-ing,” he says.
“I watched the replay and it actually made me cry! It was an awesome result.”
Daiji is about to take a group of Wainuiomata High School students to Japan for two weeks, and is looking forward to seeing how his countrymen are looking at the result.
He has also shown his classes the game.
“I have shown the students some highlights of the game in Japanese, and it is pretty interesting as the Japanese commentator gets really ex-cited, especially when they scored the try.”
This is the biggest win in Japanese Rugby history, and some are saying it is the big-gest upset in sport.
Japan now has a realis-tic chance to progress from their group, for the fi rst time in the country’s history.South African fans were dis-traught with the result, some even selling their Springbok jersey over trademe.
