Speeding buses and a lack of parking are two of the problems facing teachers, parents and children in early childhood centres in Wainuiomata.

There is little to no road signs outside of many centres in the valley warning drivers to slow down.

the bus company has responded.The kindergarten has two signs

warning drivers of the centre, but these were only put up after a child was hit by a car a few years back.

“It is only a matter of time before someone gets hit again.” says head teacher Chris Moses.

“I understand the drivers are on a schedule, but they are going so fast.”

Wainuiomata High School’s top athletes were recognised for their achievements throughout the year at last week’s sports awards.

Awards were handed out to ath-letes in all sports, many of whom have represented Wellington and New Zealand.

Sportsman of the year was given to Raymond Seumanu for his achievements in boxing, winning multiple national titles as well as the Australian Golden Gloves.

He became one of the youngest winners of the award.

The sportswomen of the year award was awarded to Sieni Samau for her achievements in a wide range of sports.

Sieni was also the top player in volleyball, girls rugby, was the top scorer in football, was the best back in league, played for Wainuiomata in club rugby and league, going on to represent Wellington in both sports.

On top of that Sieni was also selected for the New Zealand rugby league Kiwi Ferns side to play Australia next year

The MC, Phillip Kauika who

says that the school has achieved to a high standard this year in all sports.

“Many teams have made fi nals, won championships or have represented the school at regional tournaments.”

Teams who won their grades included the girls cricket team, the football fi rst XI, teams two and three in netball, the boys fi rst xv in rugby and the junior boys league team.

This year was also the fi rst year that Ignite Sports presented two special awards, both recognising character in an athlete and coach.

Trust co-ordinator Kevin Goldsbury says that the awards are given to those that embodied Ignite Sport’s values.

“Despite the attention that poor behaviour and bad sportsman-ship attracts, there are great examples of athletes who demon-strate positive character in sport and coaches who effectively model it,” Kevin says.

This year’s winners were Paa Mailangi who won the character athlete award and Ngaire Blake who won the character coach award.

“We have spent the last three or four years changing the culture of the school, and the results this year are recognition of this.”

One sure sign of summer arriving is the call of the shin-ing cuckoo, a series of upward notes followed by one or more long downward slurring notes. The birds have come back to New Zealand to breed after wintering over in the Solomon Islands. They can be heard calling from forest, scrub and farmland, which are also the habitats of their host birds, the grey warbler. Like cuckoos around the world the shining cuckoo lays its eggs in another bird’s nest.

Also called the bronze shining cuckoo, scientifi c name Chryso-coccyx lucidas, or in Maori the Pipi�Wharauroa, this sparrow-sized bird is usually not seen due to its cryptic markings and its size. It’s New Zealand’s only iridescent green bird and has green and white bands across its chest. The shining cuckoo lives on grubs and insects, including hairy caterpillars and ladybirds that other birds avoid.

It lays a single egg in the nest of a laying grey warbler, and the chick when it hatches ejects

the warbler eggs and chicks. The host then seems not to notice it’s parenting another species and continues to raise the chick. Fortunately for the grey warbler species, it has usually already raised a brood in August/September before the cuckoo arrives back in New Zealand.

A few years ago we heard a sound from the bush that could have been a bird or an insect, but even with the neighbours’ help we couldn’t fi nd what it was coming from. One day

however, I heard it in the beech tree outside the window, and looked out to see the cuckoo chick flitting from branch to twig noisily demanding food from a smaller and very busy grey warbler.

Karate club expandsExpansion to make club more dynamic

Wainuiomata’s own Wellington Regional Karate Academy (WRKA) has expanded, opening a new dojo in Lower Hutt.

The expansion came after an opportunity to lease a site on Pretoria St, head instructor and owner Scott Mackenzie says it will make the club more versatile for members.

Toxic algae has been found in parts of the Hutt River, prompting authorities to warn dog owners to take care.

Monitoring of the Hutt Riv-

er at Silverstream by Greater Wellington Regional Council shows algae has reached moderate levels.

If ingested this algae can kill dogs and cause vomiting, diarrhoea and skin irritations

in humans.Regional Council Envi-

ronmental Science Manager Graham Sevicke-Jones says algae levels are due to river levels dropping.

“This combined with warm

Warnings have been post-ed around affected areas.

There are no warnings currently about if any of the Wainuiomata rivers are affected, but people are encouraged to keep a look out to see if there are any changes in what the water looks like.

“We have plenty of mem-bers and instructors who come to live in Lower Hutt, this makes it easier for them.

“Our Hutt based instructors will run this gym, our mem-bers will be able to attend

classes at both dojo.”In an attempt to attract

more members, WRKA waived the joining fee and also gave away free uniforms and badges.

The club will be hosting an open day at the Wainuiomata dojo on January 30 and are welcoming as many people as possible to come and have a look.

Councillor Margaret Wil-lard attended the open day and says it is great to see a Wainuiomata business grow-ing over the hill.

Clubhouse road trip

Fire investigators are still unsure what caused a fire which destroyed a Hair Street fl at last week.

Last Wednesday night, neighbours reported fl ames leaping from the back

unit and thick smoke pouring from the roof and windows.

The Fire Service received the emer-gency call at 10.20pm.

The incident was initially attended by two Wainuiomata fi re trucks along with Wainuiomata Operational Support.

Soon after the call was made for more fi re trucks, these came from Seaview and Hutt City, along with a Command Unit from Wellington and a Breathing Apparatus Tender from Avalon.

No other fl ats were damaged during the fi re, and no one was injured.

The number of call-outs for the Wai-nuiomata Fire Brigade were nearly the exact same as they were the year before.

The 294 call-outs in 2015 were one down on 2014 (295), this followed a mas-sive drop after 2013 when the brigade was called 367 times.

Included in the 294 call-outs for the year were 35 residential fi res, 18 motor vehicle crashes, 10 vegetation fi res and 9 car fi res among other causes.

attended this year were the major car crash at the end of Stanley St and aided in the fl oods mid-year.

The brigade also spent much of the year raising funds for the Wainuiomata Operational Support.

This included a massive garage sale which was attended by many people from the community, who also donated much of the items on sale.

The Wainuiomata Fire Brigade is 72 years old and has a long history in the valley.

was a Morris 8 car, owned by former member Ted Smith.

When called, he would drive to the fi re station, pick up all the gear before proceeding to the fi re from there.

Wainuiomata Community Library will play host to the clubhouse road trip next Tuesday.The programme between 2pm and 4pm will explain to children between the ages of 12 and 18 how to repur-pose everyday materials.There will also be the chance to learn about electronics, eventually the chil-dren will get to make a robot which can draw. The hot summer weather has had eve-ryone heading to the Wainuiomata Pools, not just locals.

The pool has been hosting many holiday programmes, some coming from as far away as Tawa.

It is also attracting many Lower Hutt Residents, with most heading over to experience the hydro slide.

“It is the only Olympic size outdoor pool in the Wellington region, and the hydro slide is amazing through the bush,” says visitor Grant Freidman, who came from Maungaraki with his family.

“The children always enjoy coming over here, they are safe, and me and my wife can relax, we have been coming here for many years.”

The pool has been extremely popular ever since it opened early November.

Close to 800 people attended the pools on Open Day and the number has been reached on many occasions since then.

“I think the heat has been a major factor in so many people heading to pools and beaches for that matter, it has been one of the hottest summers I can remember, even when it is not sunny, it still seems hot.

Millie White came all the way from Porirua with her family, saying they had heard about the pools from friends.

“My friends son came out here last year, and he has convinced my children to come out and give it a try.

“I never knew this place existed, it is defi nitely worth the trip, Wainuiomata kept this as a well-kept secret for many years, I can see why.”

Greater Wellington Regional Council is confi dent fl ood control and river bed management will not affect swimming holes in the Hutt River.

Some members of the public have said the swimming holes seem shallower, and

some had even disappeared completely.The work on the river is being completed

to avoid gravel build ups, similar to what has happened below Melling Bridge.

Removal of the gravel is part of a $140 million central city fl oodway project.

The Pioneer Church on Coast Road is celebrating its 150th Jubilee over Waitangi Weekend.

The main celebration will take place on Waitangi Day, members of Parlia-ment and Mayor Ray Wallace will be speaking during the day.

The church is the third oldest in the Wellington region and the oldest Methodist Church.

It is one of only two buildings in Wainuiomata listed with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

Holiday fun at LibraryHoliday Fun: Children have been having fun at the Wainuiomata Library all school holidays.

Children who are not attending a holiday programme are still getting to have some fun in the holidays.

The team from Tihei Rangitahi are holding pop up days around the valley, inviting children to come and have some fun.

Renee Davies is running this programme and says she thought it would be a chance to keep some of the children busy over the break.

“It is for anyone over 12 years

who is a bit bored over the holidays and needs something to do.

“We meet up two times a week and do different activities.”

So far the children have spent a day at the basketball courts and were planning a day trip over to Days Bay, and a day swimming in the local swimming holes.

“It’s all free, we just wanted to provide the children with some-thing to do, some of them have been getting bored,” says Renee.

Tihei Rangitahi is based at the Wainuiomata Community Centre,

and most of the activities involve meeting there before moving on to whatever they are doing for the day.

Children who regularly attend Tihei Rangitahi programmes are performing at Te Ra o te Raukura in Waiwhetu at the end of the month.

The group has been practicing their music when not taking part in the pop up days.

Dear Ed, I agree 100 percent with Lance Stewart's recent let-ter to the Editor regarding the pointless garden at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill.

I have lived in Wainuiomata my entire life and like many Wainuio-mata residents, was absolutely delighted when I heard that there was going to be a bridge built at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill, at last the majestic views from the top of the Wainuiomata Hill could be enjoyed safely by residents and visitors to the valley.

However, how very disappoint-ing to see the entirely pointless landscaping which has eliminated any chance of parking at the top of the Hill when driving into the valley.

For me, one of the advantages of living in Wainuiomata has always been the majestic view of the ocean at the top of the hill when driving over and I often stop at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill on my way home from work to admire the vista and the beauty of the changing seasons refl ecting on

the landscape, I often take photos of this magnifi cent view, which is always beautiful regardless of which time of year. So part of my delight with the construction of the bridge was that I would now be able to stop at the top of the hill and walk over the bridge to the other side and enjoy the vista which was much safer than dodging traffi c to get to the other side. And then I saw that there was to be no parking there anymore.

Apart from not being able to stop and enjoy the view anymore,

cars that are experiencing engine problems always had the option of stopping at the top to make a call for help.

I am very convinced that most Wainuiomata residents would choose the parking option over the garden option at the top of the hill and I agreed with Lance Stewart's opinion that Council should rethink this decision and remove the garden and give us back our parking spaces.

Chris Bishop is encourag-ing Hutt Valley research institutes, iwi, community groups, educational organi-sations, and businesses to apply to the second round of the Unlocking Curious Minds contestable fund an-nounced today by Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce.

Offering up to $2 million for successful projects, the fund supports innovative projects that will excite and engage young people. Stokes Valley school Koraunui Primary was the recipient of $20,000 in the initial funding round,

and Mr Bishop says there are many opportunities for this funding in the Hutt Valley.

“Successful applications will help to achieve the vi-sion of transforming the Hutt into “Technology Valley”. There is a real opportunity for the Hutt Valley to be a leader in the science and high-tech industries, so I am encouraging applications to the second round of funding announced today,” says Mr Bishop, the National list MP based in Hutt South.

“At Koraunui Primary stu-dents made their own fossils and learnt about dinosaurs,

volcanoes, ear thquakes and New Zealand’s unique geological resources. With organisations l ike GNS Science based in the Hutt we can support positive, community-based teaching and learning for our young people.

“If you are an educator, re-searcher, community group or business with a passion for helping kids into science and innovation, I strongly encourage you to apply for this funding.”

The fund offers two levels of grants: up to $30,000 for local projects, and up to

$150,000 for regional or na-tional projects. Applications are sought from individuals and organisations.

The Unlocking Curious Minds programme is part of the Government’s stra-tegic plan to encourage all New Zealanders to become engaged with science and technology. It ties in with the innovation and skills streams of the Business Growth Agenda, and the National Statement of Sci-ence Investment.

The fi re service, police, Hutt City Council and Housing New Zealand have come together to host a series of barbeques across the Hutt Valley including Wainuiomata.

The barbeques, also held in Trentham, Epuni and Petone, are taking place throughout January and February with the aim of providing tips about keeping safe over summer.

These barbeques follow on from the success Housing New Zealand had when hosting the summer safe house late last year in Naenae where HNZ 550 tenants visited the house.

Housing New Zealand Area Manager Naomi Davies says it is

all about bringing the community together in a fun way to help edu-cate people about how they can stay safe in summer.

“We want our tenants and the wider community to keep safe over summer so as well as enjoying a barbeque, we will be highlighting some key areas which can be a cause of injury at this time of year.

“Some of the summer safety tips and information on the day will include keeping fi re safe, paddling pool safety, driveway safety, being sun smart and home security tips by New Zealand Police.”

There will also be other activities including sports and colouring competition for children. The fi re service will also be holding a kitchen fi re display.

The latest Housing New Zealand newsletter was also themed sum-mer safety.

“We want to continue the momen-tum with the BBQ events. It’s going to be a fun afternoon for the whole family and we look forward to seeing people there,” says Naomi. Wainuiomata’s barbeque will be held on Thursday January 28, between 3pm and 6pm at the � re station.

On Wellington Anniversary Petone Foreshore will be jam packed with all sorts of activities.Between 11am and 4pm, there will be a chance to � nd out about the history of the Hutt Valley and how the people who � rst settled in the area arrived.There will be plenty of activities throughout the day including live bands, beach cricket and weaving demonstrations.The Petone Settlers museum will also be open.

Summer safety barbecue to be hosted in Wainuiomata

2015 was an exciting year with many projects and initiatives get-ting underway. The completion of Pukeatua Bridge at the Hill summit was a highlight, along with seeing initiatives like Youth Inspire take off and make a real difference for young people in our community. It’s been great to work along the community in creating a development plan for Wainuiomata, and I really look forward to helping make sure this is implemented with a bang in 2016. It was also fantastic to see so many of our locals do good things in 2015;

the Wainuiomata Lions who put together a great season, Luke Tahurangi who won NZ’s top apprentice in vehicle refi nish-ing, seeing our community rally together in times of distress like when jogger Susan O’Brien went missing in Rimutaka Forest Park are just a few examples which reminded me of how good it feels to be from Wainuiomata. I have no doubt that this will continue in 2016.

From a Council perspective, this year I will be focusing on working alongside Mayor Ray Wallace to secure a build date for

a retirement village at Hugh Sin-clair Park. I will also be working with our Council engineers and Community Board to get the Wainuiomata Hill shared path underway and viewing platform completed. Ensuring progress with Sportsville, promoting Wainuiomata as the gateway to the outdoors, and securing Council and private investment in our town centre are also at the top of my list.

Real progress was made dur-ing 2015 on important plans and projects. The completion of Pukeatua Bridge has become a reality and is just the start of more big improvements on the hill road.

It was good to see so many inspired residents feeding into Wainuiomata’s own rejuve-nation plan. We now have a community arts network, more happening for our young people, and ideas for improving the town centre.

Wainuiomata Marae has begun plans for sustainable housing, backed by a European profes-sional group and NZ universi-ties, and schoolchildren are learning to better care for our waterways. Kaumatua have gifted their stories, and this year there will be further op-portunities to share stories of Wainuiomata.

I’ve been impressed seeing students at Rangitahi Learning Centre completing a beautiful mural and setting up Elbe’s

milkbar in Lower Hutt, serving alongside Elbe’s original work-ers. It was rewarding to work with residents on the Anzac wall hanging now on display in our Memorial Hall. Our fi rst water festival was a huge success.

Hutt City Council has suc-cessfully completed the process to enable a retirement village to be built behind the health centre, and I am hopeful pro-spective operators will make a favourable decision for our community.

The sea fog which was causing chaos at Wellington Airport was even seen in Wainuiomata.

Late on Sunday afternoon, the Wainuiomata Hill was engulfed with sea fog, which slowly moved its way up Wellington harbour to the Hutt Valley.

By 5pm Pukeatua Bridge was nearly invisible from the look

out at the top of the hill, the Hutt Valley couldn’t even be seen.

The fog caused chaos at Wel-lington airport, delaying and then cancelling fl ights in and out of the capital.

One local said it looked like a scene from a horror movie as the fog slowly crept over the hill.

The fog was caused when warm humid air crossed over the cold Cook Strait.

Chef dobs in CaféTiki Lounge in Lower Hutt has closed down after its Head Chef became so concerned about the state of his kitchen he called in the health inspectors.The call was made on December 30 after the chef became frustrated at what he called a reluctant attitude from management when it comes to cleaning.He started bringing his own chop-ping board to work after he saw other sta� using chopping boards to chop both cooked and raw meat, he also claims the dishes were rinsed instead of washed as the dishwasher used too much power.

Monday night was a stormy night all around the Wellington Region, and Wainuiomata bore the brunt of the storm which lasted throughout the night.Wainuiomata was the wettest in the region, recording 48mm when most other areas recorded between 20 and 30mm.There were 28 lightning strikes throughout the region, although the storm did help move the fog which was surrounding the harbour.

Fernlea Primary School got a little bit scary last week, holding a spooky disco to raise money for the school.

Students dressed up as ghosts and gob-

lins, staff at the school say the costumes were some of the best they have ever seen.

The end of the school holidays can be a boring time for some children who have run out of things to do over the summer.

In Wainuiomata this should not be a problem, especially in the summer months when the weather is warm.

Wainuiomata is surrounded by some of the best walks in the region, some take 25 minutes, and others can be an all-day trek.

One of the most popular walks is the Gums Loop track in the Wainuiomata Recreation Area.

This short track takes around 30-40 minutes and takes you through some amazing gum trees.

Another popular walk is the 1 hour 30 minute walk to the seal colony on the coast.

This walk starts off easy over sand, as

you get closer to the seals however, it turns into rocky terrain so strong walking shoes are needed.

For those who are keen, there are various walks all the way to Eastbourne.

The rivers in Wainuiomata are known for being pristine and clean, and are always full of people having a dip.

Some of the more popular swimming spots include the swimming holes in the Wainuiomata rec area.

There are parks a plenty around the val-ley, a great chance to set up a family game of cricket or touch rugby.

For those who want to, a day at the Wainuiomata Swimming Pools is always a good choice, take a few sausages, fi re up one of the barbecues and let the children loose, it is cheap enough and is always safe thanks to the life guard.

With the Australian cricket tour to New Zealand just around the corner, a lot of air time on the likes of Radio Sport is being devoted towards this tour.

Yesterday I heard some interesting points made by, I think it was, Mark Watson.

Mark said Australians were hypocritical and arrogant, he then made various points to back this up, I tended to agree with these as well.

He talked about how the Australian cricket team demanded English cricketer Stuart Broad should have walked during the Ashes series of 2013, when the Australians felt he was clearly out then he compared it with the fact that just last week George Bailey was in a similar position and refused to walk against India.

The Australian fans and players were very quick to complain and say Broad was not complying with the ethics of cricket, but they are rather silent when it is on the other foot.

Another rather interesting point is when West Indian cricketer Chris Gayle fl irted on air with a female journalist, the Australian media and public were very quick to call Gayle a bad guy, I do not agree with what he did, but Australians need to look at their own kind fi rst, Shane Warne for example, his reputation is well known, but he gets away with it in Australia.

The Australian cricket team seems to believe they are above everyone else, which of course is not true.

In my eyes the Australian cricket team is like the All Blacks in terms of scale when it comes to their sport, they have a long history of being the best and generally are always at the top of cricket rankings.

The big difference I see, other than the actual sport of course, is the attitude of the team.

The All Blacks are genuinely a friendly team, on and off the fi eld, they are loved around the world and know they must keep to a high standard when they are in public, they treat all their opposition with respect and these days would never resort to dirty tactics to win a game. When is the last time you heard of an All Black bullying the opposition or physically harming a player, I cannot think of one in recent years.

The Australian cricket team is nearly the complete opposite, they will do anything to win, they have a history of doing anything to win, they will say anything to anyone, and every so often even resort to physical bullying, remember Mitchell Starc throwing a ball at one of our players last November? Local motorbike rider Shane Rich-ardson is ruing a terrible fi nal round which cost him the Suzuki Series title.

Over December Shane competed in the Suzuki Series, which takes place over three rounds throughout the month.

Round One was at Hampton Downs in the northern Waikato, and Shane hit the series well, fi nishing third in both races of the round.

“Being the first real race of the season I had to dust off the cob-webs and get back into the swing of it all.

“I was happy with two 3rds for the fi rst round as it put some good points on the board and the whole meeting went with no issues,” says Shane.

Round two was at Manfi eld in Field-ing, and Shane dominated this round of racing, winning both races, leaving him with a nine points clear on top of the series table.

When the series hit Whanganui for the fi nal round of the series on the famous Cemetery Circuit, things turned sour for Shane, who came into the round believing he could wrap up the championship.

“It shouldn’t have been hard to wrap up given how I normally go at Cemetery Circuit.

“The day started out good, I was fast-est in practice and fastest in qualifying which had me starting off pole.”

Pole position is on the right hand side of the track, leading into a sharp right turn, a turn which ended up costing Shane the Suzuki series.

“I got a good launch and lead into turn one, but was caught out not realising how tight the turn was from the inside and how much I had to slow down. Once I had hit what is usually the apex I knew I was screwed.

“I was still going straight and hadn’t scrubbed off the speed. There was only two options, ride straight into

the fence and crash, or tuck the front trying to make it round while still braking, there was no getting out of it. I tried my luck at making the turn but I ended up washing out the front end and throwing away the Suzuki Series Championship right there and then.”

Luckily the bike was not too badly damaged, and Shane was ready for the second race, in which he fi nished second.

This meant Shane fi nished third in the standings, a result he was not too unhappy about after a ‘did not fi nish’ result.

“I was only half a point off fi nishing second overall which really gutted me, but in my eyes I was more than capable of winning the series so sec-ond wouldn’t have been much better than third.”

Shane is now competing in the New Zealand superbike series, which started in Christchurch this past weekend.

The Wainuiomata Under 21 Colts side had a mixed season in 2015.

The year started well going through all their preseason games unbeaten.

This included defeating Poneke in a grading game, handing the side promotion to Division One.

Following that we knew fi rst division would be a hard task, this was not helped as we got struck hard by injuries and we lost a few games.

At one stage we played Wellington with only 16 players and lost by 3 points after leading

most of the game.It was announced the rugby union restruc-

tured the divisions making one big division playing for four Cups.

Wainuiomata won enough games to make a semi-fi nal for one of these cups unfortunately we lost this to Ories at home.

Our players had a huge task for the season and responded well barring injury.

As coaches we couldn’t be happier with the way the team managed throughout the season.

With preseason training started at William Jones we are expecting a few new faces for the season, hopefully we can continue to win throughout the 2016 season.
