Senior Medical Officer NRMC, Kaneohe Bay

EDITOR'S NOTE: This article is the second in a four -part series designed to In.

form the 19,00() patients treated at the Naval Regional Medical Clinic, Branch Clinic MCAS, Kaneohe Bay on quality health care

and the ways patrons can help improve the

services.

Over the years, as the

military operational tempo has increased, the number of medical personnel has decreased for several reasons. As mentioned in part one,

our first allegiance is to

the fighting forces.

Retention is not nearly what we would desire. Medical manpower shortages are not peculiar to MCAS Kaneohe Bay, but are Navy-wide; indeed, they are trbservice wide. Although the type of shortage varies (medical officers, nurses, hospital corps-

men, etc.) the shortages persist in one field or another. Our present shortage is hospital corps personnel.

Our branch clinic has a dual staffing mix which employs both garrison let Marine

Brigade and Naval Regional Medical Clinic, Pearl Harbor resources. Our man- power authorization provides for only 32 hospital corps person - net from NRMC supple- mented by 45 from the tat Marine Brigade by virtue of an agreement.

For more than two years we have had a shortfall in either medical officers or hospital corps person. net. Recognizing the progressive inability of the 1st Marine Brigade to provide its share of personnel, NRMC Pearl Harbor has aug- mented us over and above our manpower authorization of 32 people by assigning additional corpsmen as well as several civil service positions.

To give credit where due, I must mention that our Red Cross volunteers have done a smashing ' job in helping us to live with our losses. In spite of recurring personnel problems, however, a brave point of fact is that the number of persona we have cared for has hardly dimin- ished. In a word, because of their dedica-

Vork offsets losses minimum of 66 hours a week: hardly as useful Lion to you, our patients, the corpsmen do more each day. There is no one in the clinic who knows what a 40-hour work week is like. In the recent past our corps personnel have averaged a recruiting or retention tool.

Although we're concerned primarily with the care of the sack and injured, without regard to established priorities, there are other duties with which we are tasked and must, by regulations, perform. Examples are: medical boards; physi- cal exams required for various reasons such as annual flight, program application, reenlist. ment, pre-placement, release from active duty, ordnance driver and industrial health; involvement in indus- trial hazard programs including conserva- tion, sight conserva- tion, immunization, tuberculosis screening asbestosis and a whole range of other industri- al hazards; preventive medicine functions such a clubs and water quality monitor- ing and identification of potential health hazards.

In an effort to offset projected losses and maximize remaining resources throughout Oahu, Pearl Harbo

Clinic opened an extended primary care clinic which is avail- able to all active duty and retired personnel and their dependents. The hours of the clinic are: Monday through Friday, 5:30 to 10 P.m. and Saturday, Sunday and holidays: 10 a,m. to 7 p.m.

"Operation Long Life" was established and is held one Saturday each month at each branch clinic. Staffed by senior nurses, our invaluable Red Cross volunteers and medical officers of the rank of 0-6, this clinic provides gyne- cological cancer screen- ing services for those who are unable to keep appointments during. the week because they must work.

Finally, a booklet titled, "Medical Advice for Everyday Use" was resurrected, modified and published in an effort to better educate our patients to deter- mine the problems that

should or should not have to come to the clinic, and measures the patient can perform at home, As an aid, you may pick up a copy in the cline.

Through the booklet many of the "worried well" will be

educated to the point that they are able to better cope with most minor` problems rather than coming to the clinic. This will allow us more time to deal with those with more serious medical prob lems.

14 we Prevention Week emphasi7es by Sul 1)eiiiiie 1

"Early detection your best tire lame, tion" is the theme for the annual observance of Fire Prevention Week in Hawaii Oct. through 11.

This year marks the tiOth anniversary of Fire Prevention Week and gives national em- phasis to the iinpor- lance of practicing fire prevention methods year round.

THE WEEK'S state-

Wide activities begin a day early Saturday at Diamond Head Crater with a 9:30 a.m, fire safety demonstration. The event is free, open to the public ands features various city, county, state and military firefighting units. The highlight of the day should be the testing of a joint firefighting effort involving a simulated plane crash. There are also free refreshments

and balloons for the keikis.

Mokapu Elementary School at MCAS Kaneohe Bay will have a firefighting and prevention display Mon- day.Tho progra m begins at 9:30 a.m. and features a hook and ladder truck from the Honolulu Vire Depart- ment's Company 18 in Kailua and two pumper trucks from the air station's Federal Consolidated Fire Department, Station Eight,

Among the statewide school activities throughout the week are test fire drille and a fire safety poster contest.

THE HONOLULU Fire Department esti- mates that 90 percent or Hawaii's working force is unfamiliar with fire evacuation procedures for the buildings in which they work. This also applies to military personnel with their high turnover rate which brings in new

people who have not participated in evacua- tion drills in their work sections.

Carelessness and inattention to fire precautions have been the cause of many disasters, one of which coincides with this week's observance.

WHEN THE GREAT Chicago Fire erupted Oct. 8, 1871, 250 lives were lost before the raging inferno was brought under control. More than $200 million

in damage was suffered by the "Windy City." All this havoc has been attributed to a cow that knocked over a lump, setting a barn ablaze and subsequently a large sector of the city.

Fire Prevention Week is a reminder to all families to review their living habits in order to improve fire safety in their homes. Places of business should also use the week as an opportunity to survey their operations for potential danger areas.

PAM Andy Hutchison, 3d Marines udjutant: "Do Marines feel the Physical Fitness Test adequately measures their physical strength and fitness. If not, why?"

Cpl Don Watson, H &HS: "I would ask people what they think of the military pay system and if they think they are getting paid swiftly and accurately.

NCOs shoulder responsibility "Any officer can get by on his sergeants.

Ti, be a sergeant you have to know your stuff. I'd rather be an outstanding sergeant than just another officer."

-GySgt Daniel Daly

Impossible, an outrage, inefficient, and unheard of. That's what the Marine Corps would be without noncommissioned officers. NCOs are the backbone of the Corps. Try to imagine the Marine Corps without them.

What a nightmare!

WITHOUT NCOs the Corps would probably be a poorly-trained, ragtag, motley mob rather than the strongest, most versatile and elite fighting force in the world. Of all the services, the Corps has always had the lowest ratio of commissioned officers to enlisted strength, and that's simply because the Corps tasks its NCOs with greater challenges than those of other services.

The best way for a military organization to operate with fewer officers is to have top- notch NCOs, and the Corps can justifiably boast of having the cream of the crop.

ALTHOUGH WARS are nothing new to history, noncommissioned officers are as old as war itself. The Book of Deuteronomy speaks of "captains of fifties and captains over tens" among the forces of Moses. The Roman legion was commanded by a centurion, who was similar to a gunnery sergeant.

After Rome fell, there weren't any

organized military forces. The first elements of military organization appeared during the 14th century, and with it emerged the noncommissioned officer.

The first military unite consisted primarily of French, Swiss and Italian mercenaries who served under the flag of the state that fed and paid them. It was in these units that the ranks of corporal and sergeant came into being. Sergeant goes back as far as 1426.

By 1778 Prussian advisor Baron von Steuben attempted to mold the Continental Army into a professional force. Ile wrote, in part, the following regulation for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States:

THE CHOICE of noncommissioned officers is a subject of the greatest importance. The order and the discipline depends so much on their behavior. Honesty, sobriety and a remarkable attention to every point of duty, with a neatness in their dress, are indispensable requisites; a spirit to command respect and obedience from the men, an expertness in performing every part of the exercise and an ability to teach it are also absolutely necessary.

Von Steuben's attributer a noncom- missioned officer can b interpreted us character, attention to duty, loyalty, profes- eionnl skill, command presence and ability to instruct. These characteristics are as valid today as they were at Valley Forge. Noncommissioned officers exist in the

military for five main purposes: to decentralize command authority in an

School Physicals Each August our Branch Clinic's dedicated medical personnel devote three days to a

School Physical Examination Program in an effort to help get our children ready to return to school.

This effort keeps a tremendous number of dollars in the pockets of each of our military families since these physicals are not covered by CHAMPUS. Because 'of your cooperation, the clinic was allowed to devote the majority of its personnel to physical exams while minimizing services in other areas.

The program has been exceedingly productive and increasingly popular. In comparing data rreni previous three-day programs we noted the following:

1978 1979 1980 Number of School physicals completed 777 911 93'7

Average time for completion One hour 30 mins. 20.25 mins. Estimated costs if out of pocket* $50,000 $68,000 $79,800 *Costs based on current pediatric fees and include immunizations preparatory to the physical exam.

Throughout the period of the program, acutely ill patients were seen in the Emergency ROOM and figures, available only for 1979 and 1980, were similar. In 1979, 227 patients were seen and the average waiting time was 15 minutes. In 1980, 228 patients were seen and the average waiting time was 10 minutes.

A very special thanks must go to the Red Cross Volunteers who helped to keep the program moving. Their splendid assistance and dedication was invaluable.

Once again the cooperation, understanding and dedicated efforts of all concerned have contributed significantly to enhancing the quality of life for all of as here at MCAS Kaneohe Bay. Mahalo nui loa!

orderly structure down to the smallest element in an organization; to provide links between officers and the troops; to provide senior enlisted advisor -a first sergeant, a platoon sergeant, or a sergeant major - for each commander; and to afford avenues for

advancement whereby enlisted personnel may realize their full potential as leaders. Not every Marine can become a general, but with dedication and a good attitude every Marine can win chevrons and, in so doing, demonstrate that the road to the top is always open.

THE NCO'S purpose is to recognize and reward outstanding technical and military skills, assisting a commander in leading, training and taking care of his Marines. As Reginald Hargreaves, a veteran British officer, wrote: The NCO exists to teach the soldier the details of his business and to cushion those contacts between officer and man which would lead to disillusionment on both sides."

It's a well-known fact that the Corps' NCOs fulfill these purposes, and are different from NCOs of other services. The reasons for the distinctions are as varied as the differences themselves.

That difference in Corps leadership has been exemplified many times by legendary Marine NCOs such as Hayes, Quick, Diamond, Janson, Sehriver, Basilone and Wilson.

Several outstanding Marine officers were once NCOs before commissioning. Among them were names like Puller, Cukela, Crowe, Hanneken, Berkeley, and Thomas, who was the last Marine in Corps history to rise from private to full general while on active duty.

WHEN MILITARY history is recorded, the generals who won battles will always be identified, but as the proceeding names testify, Corps history has always identified

Kindness converts sinners

victory immortalized the NCO* who mode

The world changes for a Marine promoted into the NCO ranks. Upon appointment, he or she receives a certificate of appointment which is the basis of authority, rank, status and responsibilities. The words printed on the warrant sum up the reasons the Corps expects its NCOs to be the best.

The keywords in the new status ark "Special, trust and confidence." This phrase means that the recipient's commanding officer and the Marine Corps has specifically chosen this Marine for the rank in question.

The warrant also directs the appointee to "carefully and diligently discharge the duties of the grade to which appointed by doing and performing all manner of things thereunto pertaining."

Simply put, this tasks the Marine SCOW do the best job possible within the scope of the specified grade.

A Marine NCO's warrant also establish- es authority over all seamen and Marines of lower rank. In the words of the certificate they must, "render obedience to appropriate orders."

Contrary to some belief, an NCO's authority is not confined to a squad, platoon or company. As far as junior ranks are concerned, a Marine NCO is the Marine Corps.

Living in an NCO's work. is indeed an honor, and to keep the privilege Marine NCOs must professionally accept and meet the responsibility of molding the Corps into a smooth-running, precise piece of machinery.

The Corps recognizes its NCOs as the foundation upon which it is built. NCOs are entrusted with maintaining the Corps ideology, and grooming today's junior Marines to become tomorrow's leaders.

Actions affee everyone by Chaplain John Newton

Happiness and kindness go hand-in- hand. You simply can't eePatate them. The double reward of kind words and actions is the happiness they bring to others and the happiness they bring to ourselves. The very process of speaking kind words brings a happiness all its own. In the same way, there is a special glow that conies over us when we perform an act of kindnese toward others.

On the other hand, the most frequent cause of unhappiness consists of the selfish and unkind words and actions of men toward one another.

A story is told that Abraham Lincoln was walking down the street one day with his two small sons, when the boys started fighting. "What's the trouble with your boys, Mr. Lincoln?" a passer-by inquired.

"The :Jame thing that is wrong with thereat of the world," woe Lincoln's reply. "I've got three walnuts and each boy wants two!"

This eimide story reminds us that the bigger problems in the world have their roots in the unkindness and selfishness of men toward one another. By the same token, the world can be changed for the better insofar as each person does his part to bring kindness and love into every aspect of human affairs.

Kindness is contagious. One kind action leads to another. If we show kindness toward someone, he responds with kindness. This is the most important effect of kindness upon others - it makes them kind themselves. Kindness has converted more sinners than zeal, eloquence or learning. In fact, these have never converted anyone without kindness.

Doris Barlett, dependent: "How do people feel about the new cheek cashing policies at the 7-Day Store?"

Hgt Perry Ezell, Met, 3/3: "Bo people feel the Servicemen's Group Life insurance adequately rovers them, considering the increeanis inflation rate?"

revention : Negket and ineffective e scape routes fan potential f ire disasters in the home

By Sgt Dennis National Fire Pre-

vention Week, Oct. 6 through 11, is designed to call attention to the need for identifying and eliminating poten- tial fire hazards.

Statistics from the National Fire Protec- lion Association show that eight of every 10 major fires occur in the home. Late detection of those fires contributed significantly to heavy losses in lives and property. It has been estimated that 80 percent of all multi- death home fires occur between 11 p.m. and 8 am., when most people ore asleep.

ADDITIONAL fig. urea state that of all building fires occurring In this country, 18 percent are the result of heating and cooking, 18 percent are electrical in nature, 12 percent are due to smoking and matches, and seven percent are attributed to flammable liquids.

These statistics are indeed thought provok- ing, but what can we do to make our homes safer? Official* at the

Litalien

Federal Coattolidatad Fire Department at MCAS Kaneohe Bay offer the following suggestions:

-Discard items elicit as oily rags, old paint, unsafe containers for gasoline, old news- papers, rubbish, wood scraps, old tires, and unused clothing, boxes or bags.

-Keep matches away from children.

-Close matchbook covers before striking, being careful to light matches and smoking materials away from flammables, expletives or fumes that might ignite.

-Extinguish match- es and any lighted objects in deep-well ashtrays or similar non-flammable recept-

-Never throw the contents of an ashtray into regular rubbish containers. The beat place to dispose of them is to flush them down the commode.'

--Close the doors to all bedrooms when going to bed at night. This will keep fire out of

the room long enough to allow escape through a window if departure through a door in impossible.

-Don't leave young children alone.

-Don't smoke in bed. -Inspect appliances

such as stoves and heaters for unsafe operating conditions.

-Hold family fire drills so everyone knows all exit routes.

-Have an escape plan which allows everyone two ways out of the house-a normal exit and an alternate.

-While every hous- ing unit on the air station has a smoke detector an added safeguard might be considered, such aa fire extinguishers. if bedroom windows are too high to safely jump from, perhaps rope or chain escape ladder to keep at the window of each bedroom would be, a wise purchase.

HERE ARE some other common bare suggestions that will help a person escape if a fire does occur:

-Always, before opening a door with a fire in the house, feel

the door. If it is hot, keep it closed.

-If you must go through a smoke-filled room, crawl on hands and knees with head low to avoid breathing smoke.

-Have your family

agree on a safe place to meet outside the home eo you can count heads to make sure everyone is safe.

-When out, stay out. Countless people have been burned to death when they went back

into a building after getting out safely.

-Don't call the fire department from a burning building. Get out safely, then tele- phone from a neigh- bor's home or use an alarm box.

AIR STATION residents are reminded that if a fire starts, do not call the 911 number used by the civilian community. This just wastes precious minutes at a time when every

second may count. For fires on base dial 471- 7117.

Awareness of fire prevention safety in the home can minimize the chance of fire and make the difference between

life and death if one does strike. Remember, a little time spent an preventive meaaatali and selecting' escape routes can make all the difference, but the best rule is to never give fire an opportunity to start.

Chaplain sparks hope on by Sgt Chuck Henry

ABOARD THE USS NEW ORLEANS, AT SEA, sEvr. 17 - Slip- ping his white robe over jungle - camouflaged shirt and trousers, polished combat boots showing beneath, the lanky :15.year-old Roman Catholic priest creates an unusual fashion combi- nation.

The look doesn't seem odd at all though, to the 20 or no Marines and sailors of the 31st Marine Amphibious Unit and crew of this Amphibious Squadron One ship who wait

patiently in the ship's library. It's 11:30 a.m. and time for the Rev. George Ridick to preside over daily mass, What makes this celebration of the mass different from any other is that it's taking place in the Indian Ocean.

A staff officer with the 31st Marine Amphibious Unit, Ridick is a lieutenant in the Navy's chaplain corps, assigned to look after the religious interests. of not only Catholic, but other denominational groups among the unit's 1,800

men. A select numborof the Navy's 1,860 chaplains are maligned duty with Marine units. According to the chaplain, the work is both "fulfilling -and fun."

Ridick grew up in the conservative, industri- al and college town of Worcester, Mass., doing well both aca- demically and athleti- cony. For a brief time after graduating from high school, he worked with the Massachusetts Department of Public Works.

The chaplain went on to get a Bachelor's degree from his home- town's Assumption

College, then studied at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md., grad- uating in 1973. He was ordained for service with the Worcester Diocese and spent the following three years in parish ministry there.

IN 1076, Ridick volunteered for the chaplaincy, requesting the approval of dioce- san authorities. Due to an overall shortage of individuals going into the priesthood, church officials are sometimes reluctant to assign priests outside of their parish. However, Ridick's strong desire to work with service

rizon people convinced them to allow the assign- ment.

He was commission- ed a lieutenant junior rgeritde pottei the hto e NNaey and

Newport, R.I. for an eight-week military indoctrina- tion.

"I really made some lasting friendships during those first weeks in the service," remarks Ridick. "Here we were, a group of young priests, ministers and rabbis trying to get used to uniforms, paperwork, the rank structure . . It was the same culture shock everyone goes through when they're first put

in the military environ- ment. Even though we represented different religious organizations, our group developed a real fraternal feeling. We were all there for the same purpose and had more in common than would separate us."

IN DECEMBER of 1976, the chaplain, along with another priest with whom he had been through orientation school, reported to Naval Station Guam to begin his chaplaincy. Work- ing with soldiers, saildrs, airmen and Marines stationed on

EDITOR'S NOTE: Consumer's Choice is designed to bring various aspects of a

subject to the con-

All Americans are consumers in one form or another. Because of the nature of

our complicated govern- ment and economic necessities from day day, every citizen should seek skills to

confidently take part in being a smart con-

sumer. Everyone should strive to make know- led geable decisions about how and where his money is spent.

President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the week of Oct. 6 through II "National Consumer Education Week," de- signed to focus a wide scale of attention to the incalculable benefits of consumer education.

NCEW can also be a perfect time to bring issues of definite consumer interest to public attention.

Command work- shops could also be organized to focus on topical helium, such as energy conservation, beneficial ways of utilizing the new pay raise, getting credit and making worthy long- term investments.

Consumer education, in or out of, the class- room, can help many buyers develop skillful spending habits by learning to be more attentive shoppers, understand more about marketplace functions, and develop participa- tory skills in govern- ment and local financi- al decision making.

The president point

ed out in his National Consumer Week ad- dress, "America's economy is the largest in the history of the world. Every citizen son benefit from knowing more about consumer laws, rights, and avenues of redress.

"Many people, in- cluding the young and elderly, need help in learning about buying skills, financial man- agement, resource conservation methods, and self-help or alter- nate solutions to. economic restraints."

SAFE! - The umpire signals safe as a '262 runner crosses home plate and the 2/3 catcher searches for the ball during round two of the wives' softball tournament at MCAS Kaneohe Bay's Mindy Field Sunday. '262 defeated 2/3 14-8 to capture their second straight win.

women's sportsmanship Flashback: Several

wives of Marines deployed with 2d Battalion, 3d Marines and Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron - 262 held their own softball to u fa a m en t July 20, to the delight of many fans. Two-sixty- two won the first round 2011, and both teams eagerly awaited the next showdown.

Round two of that tournament was played Sunday at Itisely Field and once again, '262 walked away as win- ners by a score of 14.8. But, as in the first game, there wasn't a need for the losers to hold their heads down because the women played with the hearts of champions.

by Sgt Pepper Davis

TIMM-262 wasted no timeestablishing a lead over their opponents as five runners crossed the plate. '2/3 popped -up little in the second inning to cop a run, but '262 added three more to their count to lead 7- 1.

In the top of the third, a 2/3 home run inched them closer as '262 made fewer mistakes and exhibited a frac- tion more aggressive- ness.

The fourth inning brought two more runs for 2/3, but also dropped off three at '262'9 doorstep.

Blazing bats and quick reactions were 2/3's keys to their offense in the fifth as they scored four runs,

however '262 came to bat and matched runs with their ()aliments to move into the fifth leading 14.8,

If 2/3 wanted to stay in contention they had to move now. '262, realizing the threat, buckled down on defense to hold 2, ;1

motionless for the duration of the contest. The game ended with '262 on top, 14-8.

Fun, excitement and togetherness were the real winners in the wives tournament. That was the whole intent. As evidenced by the spirit and enthusi- asm exhibited by the players, the mission was more than ac- complished.

mearnir as au Nom tali mum. Marines thwart Army Pepper Davis

"We're number one! We're number one! We're number one!" That chant was heard throughout the area surrounding MCAS Kaneohe Bay's Pop Warner football field Saturday as the Hawaii Marine tackle football team celebrated a 32-30 victory over the Army's 24 Brigade gridiron squad. The victory made them undefeated in four games.

Saturday was n duplication of the Marines' opening day, with warm tempera- tures, a slight breeze and bleachers filled with fans.

The Leathernecks entered the contest sporting a two-win, no loss and one-tie record. 2d Brigade, which cap- tured the league crown

last season, boasted a modest no-win, two losses and no ties.

The Army won the toss and elected to receive. Within two minutes they copped a touchdown. The two- point conversion was good, and last year's champs led 6-0. But the Marines had four downs to show their stuff, too.

On the first play from scrimmage, Leather- neck quarterback Cpl Rushton Gunter spot- ted SSgt Joe "Speedy" Blackburn streaking up the middle and laid a perfect pass in his hand for a 64-yard touch- down run. A few plays later WTI Albert Wiley bulled across the goal line for six points. The extra point attempt failed.

Second Brigade picked up another Tll before the first quarter expired and assumed a 16-14 advantage. In the second, a 25-yard pass from LCpl Ray Radarte to Blackburn was good for another Marine score. The two-point conversion was good and Kaneohe widened the gap 20-16.

On the kick-off, an Army runner danced his way around the Marine defenders for an 85-yard return, but an offensive clipping penalty nullified the score. The Marines forced a fumble on the next play, and took control on the one. Quarterback Radarte sneaked through the defense for a tally to 26- 16.

The third quarter came and went with little fanfare on the

Marine side of t house, but 2d Brigs picked up steam and', added to their score.

The fourth quarter, the do-or die period for both teams, was the turning point for 2d Brigade as they stacked up a 30-26 lead over Kaneohe.

It seemed as if the Marines' momentum had abandoned them and defected to the Army side.

With minutes left in the game, Wiley,on a pitch-out from Radarte, turned a corner and headed full steam up the sideline for a 72- yard scoring run.

Wiley's sprint put the Matinee on top 32-30, and the fired-up Marine defense held their ground and thwarted Army scoring attempts to destroy their un- defeated streak.

Chaplain the South-sea island, he kept busy.

"In Guam we dealt with people in quite a variety of situations. Not only were all of the services represented, but also a number of different fields, from submarines to barracks Marines. Each of these jobs had its own unique stresses and in our counseling sessions we tried to help men and women cope with problems and the loneliness sometimes felt in such duties," remembers Ridick.

AFTER THE 16-

month tour ("Unac- companied," he quips)

the priest was slated for transfer to Parris Island, S.C., but a Navy-wide shortage of Catholic chaplains required a reshuffling of orders and he was assigned to the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Ill. For nearly two years he served as the only Catholic priest working with recruits going through "boot camp" at the center.

"It was challenging, to say the least," he recalls. "During peak summer months there would be between eight and ten thousand recruits aboard, of which usually one

quarter were Catholic.

"WHEN THE guys would enter the world of the military, some- times the only thing they would find recog- nizable from their civilian lives would be a priest or minister. Most of the individual ministering I did went beyond denomination and was basically en- couraging guys and helping them adjust to the new experience. With a 30 percent change in recruits every week, you were always dealing with different groups at matte, but because of their situation, those

who came each week were always receptive."

March of 1980 found Ridick assigned to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan for duty as Marine Aircraft Group chap- lain. Four months later the 31st Marine Am- phibious Unit prepared for deployment to the Indian Ocean and the chaplain, along with

's assistant, Cpl Mark J nes, 21, of Baden, P ., joined them.

he good-natured Ridick has earned a reputation among Marines and sailors alike as "the chaplain you always see" in berthing, on the mess deck, jogging with

troops on the flight deck, visiting those in the brig and dispen- sary, and "being there" when needed. He calls it a "ministry of presence."

"BEING A chaplain is unlike other service fields, even medicine," explains Ridick. "For someone to bring their very intimate problem to you, you've got to be a familiar face.

"I've always enjoyed my service with the Marines in that I'm always allowed access to the troops," he continues. The priest takes advantage of the access and also partici-

pates in special service activities alongside Marines and sailors.

His day -to -day re- sponsibilities include saying daily mass and conducting confession, bible studies and rap sessions. lie also handles messages from the American Red Cross concerning individual's family affairs, coordinates the activities of Catholic laymen leading MUSH on ships without priests and counsels young men thinking about marriage. An- other activity he has participated in, ex- emplifying the ecumen- ical character of his

staff position, is securing the elements needed for celebration of upcoming Jewish holy days by Jewish Marines and sailors.

"ATTENDING mass at lunchtime every day has been what's kept me going during this deploy- ment," comments LCp1 Mark Hammer, 21, of Bozeman, Mont., a Marine from Battalion Landing Team 2/3, the 31st Marine Amphibi- ous Unit's ground combat component. "For me, the Mass serves as a break in hectic days when I have some time to atop

and sort -out my thoughts. Father Ridick has been a real boost to morale out here. He comes across like a teacher, straight- forward and logical, someone you can really learn from. lie's very approachable, the kind of guy who would sit and listen to your problems even after taps. I know, because he's done it for me."

In his easy-going New England accent, Ridick explains that he thinks most people are "trying to make something of their lives. They're looking for things like purpose,

pride and happiness.

"I'M HOPING to help these guys inte- grate into their lives a spiritual dimension that goes beyond here and now so that even under the gloomiest conditions there can be a spark of hope on the horizon."

For many Marines and sailors with the Indian Ocean-deployed 31st Marine Amphibi- ous Unit, the spark of hope on the horizon might be the Rev. George Ridick being lowered by harness from a helicopter to celebrate mass on their ship.
