DOVW2005

> All the action from the 2005 Day of the Volkswagen...

The third “Day of the Volkswagen” (DOVW)held at the Yarra Valley Racing Club at YarraGlen is over. For the last two years we hadspare spaces for cars, but this year, justabout every piece of grass had an oil drip ortwo from a VW. It was a great show assistedby the weather and a tremendous turn up ofmany different types of VW’s.

The traders arrived early, some even thenight before to get their stands ready in timefollowed by the swappers laying out theirsites with the gate being opened to thepublic from 9.00am. Again Stuart Ermel didthe organisation of the Swap site . Thanks alot Stuart. At the gate to greet those arrivingwas Andrew Ermel, Richard Graham, ChrisAntonello and Ray Cantor. Thanks for thetime and the consistency of assessment ofthe show cars, classes etc.

This year we exceeded last year’s entryof cars in the show and shine competitionwith 149 cars Vis last years 132. Althoughimprovements were made on the judgingsheets and the computer programming, itstill took Head judge Richard Graham,Michael Cronin, Malcolm Thompson andJohn Farlow time to enter and grade theresults. Thanks for the efforts of the judgeson the day and a special thanks to Richard,Michael, Malcolm and John for the improve-ment over last year’s event.

This year we decided to set up a biggerClub Stand which include the areas ofmembership, expertly organised by RossWoolley with his new computer, Ross wasable to accept new members, enter their

names on the Club’s data base, then print oftheir membership card and even laminate thecard.

Not to be out done, Ross’s darling wifeMercedes (no relation to Benz), had a greatrange of new Club Merchandise, which wasin great demand. Much of it was sold on theSaturday with keen club members trying tohave something different to wear on theSunday to impress their friends. It worked.Well done Ross and Mercedes for a veryprofessional approach in selling the Club.

A sporty sidekick could eventually join the Golf and Polo at Volkswagen. VW has dropped hintsabout a potential revival of its Scirocco. It did preview work two years ago with the Concept Rroadster, and followed up with the EcoRacer at the recent Tokyo Motor Show. The bright yellowEcoRacer was billed as a combination of economy and sports, with a body that can be a coupe, convertible or speedster. It could revive the Scirocca name used on a VW sports coupe throughthe 1980s.

There is a place for a two seater in the line-up and VW is pushing technology with the EcoRacer, which has a carbon-fibre body. It has a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine which is claimed touse only 3.4 litres/lOOkm, even though the car delivers l00kW, 0-I00km/h in 6.3 seconds anda top of 250km/h.

“There is certainly, potentially, a position there if we think a roadster is good for the brand,”Volkswagen spokesman Matthew Wiesner says. The EcoRacer comes as VW sets up an earlier show car, the EOS concept from Frankfurt.

For production. It may replace the long-running Golf Cabriolet, but is based on a larger mechanical package - it will have two-litre FSI and three-litre V6 engines - and is a four-seater.

“That car will be on sale in spring in Europe, which is about May,” Wiesner says. VW is about to hit the first of its sales objectives in Australia, When it returned as a full factory operation, it aimed for 15,000 sales, and it could hit the mark this year.

“It has turned out to be quite a good year” Wiesner says. •

So much for so little...> carsguide.com.au - 11/2005

Our sponsors this year really supportedthe event very well with Camberwell VWsupplying 4 cars and a special servicediscount for the day. Shannon’s this yearexpressed the desire for a more tranquilsetting in the shade under the trees with allthe beautiful cars and transporters. We werekeen to oblige.

Thanks very much for your efforts on theday and your continuing support of our Club.

The Traders who participated this year

was again an increase on last year’s event.Thank you for your support. Those presentthis year were:• Classic VW• Vintage VW• Volkscare• KDF Werks• Ace Oil• Volkshome• Antique Tyres • Wolfsburg Automotive• Volksparts

The catering this year was provided bythe Lions Club of Park Orchards, and withtheir Beetle burgers, sausages, egg andbacon rolls, hot chips plus the traditionalLions Club Christmas Cake complementedthe tea and coffee served. Thanks guys. The funds generated by this activity will goto community projects of the Park OrchardsLions Club.

For the lovers of espresso coffee, thiswas provided by the “Combi Coffee” VW and

these guys were also keptvery busy on the day.

Our Public Announcer forthe day was again MattGardner for the third year. Hisinvolvement with Puffing Billyis giving him plenty ofpractice and again anotheroutstanding effort. Matt’sability to walk around withthe extension cables kindlyloaned by club member KimWhittles, allowed Matt to alsobe part of the Club Stand. Thanks Matt and Kim.

On behalf of the organis-ing committee I would like to thank all theclub members who assisted on the day. The list is too long to mention all individuallybut thanks very much to all that helped.

Again there were many new restoredcars which haven’t been on show before.Obviously many hours of work goes onthough the year by keen VW enthusiasts toget the cars ready for the show. This iscontinuing to improve the standard of ourcars and it is very difficult just to maintainour cars with the quality bar being continual-ly raised.

After three years at the helm of theorganising committee we need a change, and I will be standing down as organiser. We need fresh new ideas for what has now

become one of the largest VWShows in Australia.

As we continue to grow,we will be looking formembers to get involved in2006. It is a very rewardingexperience and we have awell documented processwhich will assistthose taking partnext year.

Thanks for yoursupport over thelast three yearsand I look forward

with great interestto the DOVW in 2006. •

BugattiSimply the Best

> From carsguide.com.au - 11/2005

Australia's police can sleep easy. The world's fastest production car, with theability to run at nearly four times the legalspeed limit, is not coming here.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 has a top of407km/h and can catapult to 100km/h in aneck-snapping 2.5 seconds. It is clearly quickerthan a Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT andMercedes McLaren SLR supercar. But it isbeing built only with left-hand drive, ruling itout of contention here.

That's quite apart from a price of $1.4 mil-lion, delivered in Europe and without thefreight, insurance costs or taxes that wouldput it well above $2 million in Australia. The Veyron is the first car to emerge with a Bugatti badge since the company, which produced French super-exotics in the 1920sbut failed in the 1950s, became part of theVolkswagen group.

There was an earlier attempt to reviveBugatti, but it took the cash and commitmentfrom VW - which produced a Veyron conceptas far back as 1999 - to make it work.

The Veyron is the personal favourite of VWchairman Ferdinand Piech and is a cost-noproblem attack on the top end of motoring. It is a two-seat super-exotic sports car withevery possible luxury feature. Its 16.4 name-plate comes from the number of cylinders andall-wheel-drive.The car has just beenpreviewed at the Tokyo Motor Show and testdriven by a small number of journalists inEurope.

It is the pace package receiving all theattention, thanks to its eight-litre W16 engineand all-wheel-drive system. The car has fourturbochargers and produces an outrageous736kW with a neck-twisting 1250Nm of torquefrom as little as 2200 revs. It has a seven-speed double-clutch sequential manual

gearbox, fully independent suspension, specialhigh-speed tyres and carbon ceramic brakes. It even has three suspension settings tomaximise cornering grip at regular road speedsand to run at more than 375km/h.

That is when its adjustable wings pullback into the body to minimise drag and thecar is lowered closer to the ground. Luxury ishandled by everything you would expect, fromtwin leather-trimmed seats to airconditioningand CD sound.

Bugatti plans to make 300 cars, but willtake six years to hit the figure at its specialproduction plant at Molsheim in France, wherethe company was originally based. It is a newfactory, complete with a small test track, andthe emphasis is on meticulous assembly with a specially trained team.

And it stops faster than it goes. It will stopfrom 400km/h in 450m. "The driver needs tomake no compromises anywhere. It doesn'task them to put up with noise or smells orquality glitches. It is quiet, comfortable andeasy to drive fast. Quality is superb," Taylorsays.

"Bugatti had no trouble blowing its owntrumpet at the official unveiling of the Veyron16.4 in full production form." BugattiAutomobiles president Thomas Bscher saysthe Bugatti Veyron is the best sports car in theworld. "The Veyron closes the gap betweenmyth and vision," he says. "We have laid thecornerstone for leading one of themost renowned and reputablemakes of automobile from the virtu-ality of the past into the hardcompetition of the future.

“It is just the beginning. Thisautomotive brand is alive - and willlive on." •
