2015 AUTOS | THE MARKET

A Great Buying Climate

New car sales have been on the upswing in recent years, and it’s nowonder why. From reliability and warranty coverage to the sense ofpride in driving a brand-new, shiny vehicle, more and more people

are making the jump into new cars.

LOW INTERESTRATES

A big reason for thatincrease in sales has beenAmerica’s financial climate. After several years of lowinterest rates being offered, affordable financing hasbeen available to more buy-ers lately.

Credit also is beingextended at easier terms andfor longer periods of time. While lending standardsaren’t quite as loose as theywere in the heady days of2007 and 2008, most buyerswith reasonably good creditcan qualify for loans atattractive interest rates.

Even buyers with poor ormediocre credit are fre-quently able to find financingoptions that can put theminto a new car, although theymight have to pay higherrates to do so. The bottomline is that across thecredit spectrum, money isbecoming available for vehi-cle financing to make it easierfor buyers to purchase the carthey need.

Unfortunately, no oneknows how long the creditspigots will remain flowingand how long interest rateswill remain this low. Manyfinancial experts are

predicting higher interestrates in the years to comeafter several years at historiclows, so now might bethe right time to lock infavorable financing for yournew car.

RELIABILITYAnother good reason to

consider buying a newcar is that reliability ratings, almost across the board, have improved in recentyears.

While Japanese carsgained a reputation fordependability in the 1980sand ’90s, the American,European and Koreanbrands have all improvedtheir reliability ratings as

measured on ownersurveys since that time.Cars from around theworld are, in general, onmuch more equal footingcompared to 10 or15 years ago.

A Clean Test DriveNo matter how good it looks or

how beautifully it’s described inthe ad, every used car has to passone test: Does it feel right whenyou drive it?

Getting behind the wheel of aused car is one of the best waysof judging whether it’s the rightone for you, and that’s an answerthat’s going to be different forevery driver.

Some drivers want a car thatfeels crisp, firm, sporty and pre-cise. Others want a car that floatscomfortably and smoothly downthe road, soaking up the bumpsand potholes.

Aside from getting an overallfeeling for the vehicle, though, here are some things to thinkabout when doing your test drive.

FIRST IMPRESSIONSBefore putting the car into gear,

sit in the driver’s seat and playwith all the switches and buttonsyou see. Do the power windowsand locks work? Are the A/C andheater doing their jobs? Does theCD player work properly?

ON THE ROADFor the test drive itself, you’ll

want to make sure you drive ina wide variety of conditions andspeeds.Make sure you get a sense forhow the vehicle drives at highwayspeeds, so plan on driving it some-where with a speed limit of 60 mphor higher. Pay close attention toany front-end problems that willreveal themselves on the highway, like shakes, shimmies and vibra-tions.

Note any strange feelings inthe steering. If the steering wheelis vibrating at any speed, that’s asign that the car has a problem —perhaps very minor, or perhapsmajor, depending on the cause.

You should accelerate from astandstill and take note of anyissues. Listen for any unusualsounds, and notice whether thecar steers to one side or the otherunder acceleration. Pay attentionto how the transmission shifts.

Check the brakes on the car tomake sure the pedal feels firm, the car stops in a controlled wayand doesn’t pull to one side orthe other. A slight vibration at thebrake pedal or squealing soundcould be a sign that it will need abrake job soon.

AFTER THE DRIVETake a break after the test drive

to evaluate your feelings and seeanything that you might havemissed after your first walk aroundthe car.

It’s a good idea to leave the carrunning while you walk aroundand listen for any unusual noisesoutside the vehicle. Check forunusual exhaust gases, puddlesunder the car and leaks in theengine bay.

If you haven’t done so already, open all the doors and sit in theback seats to see how they fit. You’ll notice different aspects ofthe car while sitting in back, and itmight help you choose one vehicleover another.

High-intensity hand dryers can

A thermos with milk and a package

That’s when they were driving,

arrived.

Once they became passengers on

family trips, restaurant stops only

happened if the rest of us said eating

was our need, not a favor for them.

Unless your elders also amuse

themselves with the latest small

electronics, chances are they will feel

neglected and insulted if everyone in

the vehicle is so engaged. Build in

Parents know that keeping young
