Welcome to our second WACE-IRG Newsletter
For the past month our five Regional Vice-Chairs have been busy working with Dr Twyford compiling
the news and collecting pictures to showcase in this issue While reading through I am certain you will
share my enthusiasm for what has been a very productive quarter for our members This issue highlights
their many successes from winning research and service awards to offering multi-day workshops to
presenting research findings at the many CWIE events held around the globe
Itrsquos an exciting time for us as we move the research agenda forward I am pleased to announce that
since June we have increased our membership by 25 We now have 101 members representing 17
countries With such a rapid increase Marty Ford has been busy updating the roster on our website
As 2016 draws to a close we should all be very proud of how far wersquove come with advancing research in
cooperative education and work-integrated learning I look forward to an engaging and productive
2017 beginning with the second WACE-IRG Grant competition in January
Looking forward to seeing many of you at the WACE World Conference in Chiang Mai in June 2017

A new Southern Africa Society for Cooperative Education (SASCE) Executive was elected with the
following members Mr Andile Sipengane ndash Vice President Ms Fundiswa Nofemela ndash Secretary
Mr Boni Gantile ndash CEO SASCE Mr Carver Pop ndash President and Mr Thomas ndash Treasurer
The second WIL-Africa Conference was held from the 19-22 September 2016 and hosted by the
University of Johannesburg South Africa in collaboration with the National Skills Authority
(NSA) WIL Africa showcase various partnerships and best practice models of WIL and Co-
operative education and work-based learning giving professionals the opportunity to discuss
challenges and explore opportunities in the field of workplace learning
The event included an award ceremony to celebrate the contribution success and achievements
of the organisations who partake and promoted WIL in their work place and other environments
The awards ceremony was exciting and well attended as it showed off the potential of WIL in
Africa The award categories included
Certificates of Excellence for long-standing commitment to co-operative education and WIL
which were awarded to Carletonville Hospital Donarsquos Mates Youth Football Development
Academy Monalebo Engineering Services (Pty) Ltd Sappi South Africa Sun International
Umgeni Water And Vaal Maseru Bus Service
Special Award to Cathsseta for commitment to the development of co-operative education and
WIL
Lifelong Achievement Award to Danie Language for his dedication and commitment in leading
the development of co-operative education and WIL in South Africa

education and commitment to leading the development of co-operative education and WIL

Experience Magazine supported by Cooperative Education and Internship Association (CEIA) and
sponsored by the ATC Foundation is returning after many yearsrsquo hiatus with the first issue
coming out in late November As some may remember Experience Magazine provides articles on
good practice summaries on relevant research and hot topic information for all constituents
The Editor of Experience Magazine is Michael Sharp from the University of Cincinnati Center for
Service-Learning amp Civic Engagement
National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) has endorsed a new journal Experiential
Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ELHTE) a Journal for Engaged Educators It is
supported and published at Southern Utah University (SUU) and is about to release its first
volume
The Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) had a successful conference with
ACDEC on August 7-10 2016 in Moncton New Brunswick with the theme ldquoAttracting the Best
Talentrdquo At the conference Dr Norah McRae from the University of Victoria received the well-
deserved Albert S Barber Award for outstanding contributions made to the philosophy and
practice of co-operative education in Canada sponsored by the University of Waterloo To see
more about the conference go to the CAFCE website Also an annual general meeting for CAFCE
and a Professional Development event was held on November 2 2016 at the University of
Waterloo
WACE held its 2nd International Research Symposium sponsored by the University of Victoria on
June 12-15 2016 in Victoria Canada During the Symposium the award for Best Refereed Paper
was awarded to Dr Tracy Bowen from the University of Toronto Mississauga Canada for her
paper on ldquoBecoming a professional A comparative analysis between Canadian and Swedish WIL
student perspectivesrdquo This award recognizes work that provides evidence of the power of CWIE
on an academic discipline industry or students so we congratulate Tracy on being recognized for
her outstanding research in our field
NSEE held its 45th annual conference titled Experiential Education Institutional Impact
Diversity and Student Success on September 26-28 2016 in San Antonio Texas Those receiving
awards at the conference were as follows Outstanding Leader in Experiential Education Higher
Education Award Jeffrey Coker Elon University Outstanding Leader in Experiential Education
Rising Leader Kimberly Pause Tucker Stevenson University John S Duley Lifetime Achievement
Award Lynne Montrose (posthumously awarded) William H Burke Presidential Award for
Excellence in Experiential Education Dr Daan Braveman President Nazareth College
For many years NSEE has provided professional education through the Experiential Education
Academy (EEA) This professional education has core and elective courses that lead to a
certificate covering all aspects of Experiential Education These courses are provided at each
annual conference and regionally all over North America by request If your institution is
interested in providing this type of training for faculty and staff in your institution and possibly
surrounding institutions please contact the EEA through the NSEE website
Future events
For three years WACE has been holding Assessment Institutes throughout the US and Canada on
request This year a WACE Assessment Institute (AI) titled Assessing Program Effectiveness and
Learning Outcomes of Cooperative Education amp Work-Integrated Education Programs will be held
on November 2-4 2016 in Waterloo Canada The goal is for participants to acquire
understanding of the essential principles of assessment and evaluation in the context of CWIE
and leave with the knowledge and skills to develop an assessment plan that meets their needs
If your institution is interested in holding a WACE Assessment Institute please contact Mr Marty
Ford Director of Global Partners and Programs in the WACE administrative offices
The next CEIA annual conference will be held in Denver CO April 2-4 2017 Please watch on

The NSSE 46th Annual Conference will be held September 24-27 2017 at the Lowes Don Cesar
Resort St Pete Beach Florida More information is available on the NSEE website

The CEIA held their 15th Annual CEIA Training in Vail CO on June 15-17 for newcomers to the
field 3 year or less Next year the training schedule may be split between experienced
professionals and newcomers in June 21-23 so please consider participating in this informative
experience in beautiful surroundings
Southern Utah University (SUU) held its second annual Experiential Learning Leadership Institute
in Bryce Canyon National Park from June 26-30 2016 This conference provided EEA pre-
conference courses diverse opportunities to explore both experiential education and leadership
through participant presentations and included experiential education experiences for attendees
and guests in two national parks and leadership exercises within the conference proceedings
Conference participants were experiential educators and administrators from all over the US
Next yearrsquos conference will be held from June 26-29 in Park City UT More information here

Tanaka Center of Research for Cooperative and Work-Integrated Education Kyoto Sangyo
University Japan and Karsten Zegwarrd Director Cooperative Education Unit University of
Waikato New Zealand The book is based on a concurrent session Cooperative Education in
Asia held during 2015 WACE World Conference in Kyoto and will be extended to include more
areas --- China Japan Korea Hong Kong Vietnam Thailand Malaysia and Singapore with a
summary chapter The chief contributors of the country studies are WACE participants and the
co-editors will be in charge of the summary chapter The chapter writing is in process and the
final manuscript is to be submitted to the publisher Routledge by December 2017 for
publication

The 20th World Conference on Cooperative and Work-Integrated Education will be held in
Chiang Mai Thailand June 5-8 2017 with the theme New Challenges for CWIE in the 21st
Century The Opening Ceremony on June 6th will be a special event The ceremony will
encompass both the opening of the World Conference as well as the opening for the Thai
Cooperative Education Day typically attended by 750 Thai cooperative education professionals

Researchers from WACE to be invited to WEEF amp GEDC Seoul 2016 Peggy Jarvie Executive
Director Co-operative Education Waterloo University Canada and Yasushi Tanaka Center of
Research for Cooperative and Work-Integrated Education Kyoto Sangyo University Japan are
invited as special session speakers for The Global Industry University Cooperation Forum in the
World Engineering Education Forum and The Global Engineering Deans Council to be held during
6-10 November 2016 in Korea

Future CWIE events in Europe
The European Network of Cooperative and Work Integrated Higher Education (CWIHE) is a three-
year project (2014-2017) funded under the ldquoStrategic Partnership for Higher Educationrdquo scheme
in Erasmus + programme It intends to establish a solid European Network which will face the
challenges presented by the model while spreading it at EU level as a valuable alternative to
tackle unemployment and promote entrepreneurship skills The next training for teaching staff
to occur as part of the project occurs in March 2017 at Lleida in Spain The 6th training for
teaching staff will be divided in two different parts consortium internal training and open to the
public training Dates 6-10 March 2017 (details about the Universitat de Lleida model and
Spanish context) and Dates 9-10 March 2017 (for those interested in developing this type of
model in the network)

At the WACE International Research Symposium held at Victoria Canada in June it was
announced that the Asia-Pacific region will be split into two separate regions with Prof Yasushi
Tanaka being appointed as vice-chair of the Asia region and Dr Karsten Zegwaard for vice-chair
of Oceania
Australia is exploring how to better engage STEM subjects with WIL after identifying this as an
area where there is limited engagement ndash especially at pre-university level
ACEN has announced the inaugural Life Membership awards These were award to three much
celebrated ACEN members
Carrol-joy Patrick (Griffith University)
Janice Orrell (Flinders University)
Freny Tayebjee (Western Sydney University)
ACEN has also introduced National WIL Awards which were presented at the annual conference
Macquarie Universitys work with The Salvation Army won the Collaboration Award and the
Local Hero Award was won by RMIT for their relationship with Bakehouse Studios
Three $10000 ACEN research grants have been grantedThis is an exciting area where ACEN is
fostering WIL research capacity
The long serving chair of NZACE Katharine Hoskyn (AUT University) will stand down at the end
of 2016 Katharine has been chair for six years during which time Katharine forged strong
relationships between NZACE and other national WIL associations along with much needed
organisation around internal structures Katharine will be much missed as chair however she
will continue her involvement with the NZACE council Dr Jenny Fleming (AUT University) will
commence as chair of NZACE start of 2017
NZACE is currently in its 24th year and recently created a legacy document to capture the
history
The Asia Pacific Journal of Cooperative Education (APJCE) continues to grow well as an
international focused journal There are two upcoming special issues one from the WACE
International Research Symposium 2016 event (due end of 2016) and another from the ACEN
2016 event (due start of 2017)
Future events
The WAND Teaching and Learning Forum will be held at Curtin University 2 February 2017
The Western Australia chapter of ACEN will hold a research symposium in Perth 13 February
2017
The next NZACE conference will be held in Queenstown South Island New Zealand on the 26-
28 April 2017 Keynote speakers will be Richard Coll and Patricia Linn
The Victoria and Tasmania chapters of ACEN will meet at the start of 2017 dates TBC
The next ACEN conference will be held in 2018
Past eventsThe NZACE annual conference occurred in April at the Takapuna Boat Club Auckland The
conference was well-attended and included attendees from Australia US and Canada A
particularly memorable moment was when the keynote presenter stopped midway through the
presentation to allow attendees to watch a pod of dolphins swim past
The ACEN national conference WIL 2020 Pushing the boundaries occurred in September (28-30)
at Macquarie University Sydney This was a very well attended conference of 260 attendees
from 10 countries and representatives from virtually every Australian Universities The
conference was the first paperless ACEN conference and was supported by a Conference App
which worked very well (and was also a source of amusement) Prior to the conference there
was a research roundtable held with 50 people attending
The NZ Vocational Education and Training (VET) Research Forum occurred in Wellington in
October and was attended by several NZACE members in order to bring these two association
closer together There were several insightful presentation from commissioners and
governmental analysts that highlighted the demand from the current NZ government
(presumably like many governments) to make more obvious paths linking study direction with
career outcomes

At the WACE International Research Symposium held at Victoria Canada in June it was
announced that the Asia-Pacific region will be split into two separate regions with Prof Yasushi
Tanaka being appointed as vice-chair of the Asia region and Dr Karsten Zegwaard for vice-chair
of Oceania
Australia is exploring how to better engage STEM subjects with WIL after identifying this as an
area where there is limited engagement ndash especially at pre-university level
ACEN has announced the inaugural Life Membership awards These were award to three much
celebrated ACEN members

ACEN has also introduced National WIL Awards which were presented at the annual conference
Macquarie Universitys work with The Salvation Army won the Collaboration Award and the

Three $10000 ACEN research grants have been grantedThis is an exciting area where ACEN is
fostering WIL research capacity
The long serving chair of NZACE Katharine Hoskyn (AUT University) will stand down at the end
of 2016 Katharine has been chair for six years during which time Katharine forged strong
relationships between NZACE and other national WIL associations along with much needed
organisation around internal structures Katharine will be much missed as chair however she
will continue her involvement with the NZACE council Dr Jenny Fleming (AUT University) will
commence as chair of NZACE start of 2017
NZACE is currently in its 24th year and recently created a legacy document to capture the
history
The Asia Pacific Journal of Cooperative Education (APJCE) continues to grow well as an
international focused journal There are two upcoming special issues one from the WACE
International Research Symposium 2016 event (due end of 2016) and another from the ACEN
2016 event (due start of 2017)

Past eventsThe NZACE annual conference occurred in April at the Takapuna Boat Club Auckland The
conference was well-attended and included attendees from Australia US and Canada A
particularly memorable moment was when the keynote presenter stopped midway through the
presentation to allow attendees to watch a pod of dolphins swim past
The ACEN national conference WIL 2020 Pushing the boundaries occurred in September (28-30)
at Macquarie University Sydney This was a very well attended conference of 260 attendees
from 10 countries and representatives from virtually every Australian Universities The
conference was the first paperless ACEN conference and was supported by a Conference App
which worked very well (and was also a source of amusement) Prior to the conference there
was a research roundtable held with 50 people attending
The NZ Vocational Education and Training (VET) Research Forum occurred in Wellington in
October and was attended by several NZACE members in order to bring these two association
closer together There were several insightful presentation from commissioners and
governmental analysts that highlighted the demand from the current NZ government
(presumably like many governments) to make more obvious paths linking study direction with
career outcomes

The Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) had a successful conference with
ACDEC on August 7-10 2016 in Moncton New Brunswick with the theme ldquoAttracting the Best
Talentrdquo At the conference Dr Norah McRae from the University of Victoria received the well-
deserved Albert S Barber Award for outstanding contributions made to the philosophy and
practice of co-operative education in Canada sponsored by the University of Waterloo To see

and a Professional Development event was held on November 2 2016 at the University of

Diversity and Student Success on September 26-28 2016 in San Antonio Texas Those receiving
awards at the conference were as follows Outstanding Leader in Experiential Education Higher

For many years NSEE has provided professional education through the Experiential Education
Academy (EEA) This professional education has core and elective courses that lead to a
certificate covering all aspects of Experiential Education These courses are provided at each

request This year a WACE Assessment Institute (AI) titled Assessing Program Effectiveness and

on November 2-4 2016 in Waterloo Canada The goal is for participants to acquire
understanding of the essential principles of assessment and evaluation in the context of CWIE
and leave with the knowledge and skills to develop an assessment plan that meets their needs

and guests in two national parks and leadership exercises within the conference proceedings
Conference participants were experiential educators and administrators from all over the US

co-editors will be in charge of the summary chapter The chapter writing is in process and the
final manuscript is to be submitted to the publisher Routledge by December 2017 for

Chiang Mai Thailand June 5-8 2017 with the theme New Challenges for CWIE in the 21st

At the WACE International Research Symposium held at Victoria Canada in June it was
announced that the Asia-Pacific region will be split into two separate regions with Prof Yasushi
Tanaka being appointed as vice-chair of the Asia region and Dr Karsten Zegwaard for vice-chair
of Oceania
Australia is exploring how to better engage STEM subjects with WIL after identifying this as an
area where there is limited engagement ndash especially at pre-university level
ACEN has announced the inaugural Life Membership awards These were award to three much
celebrated ACEN members

Janice Orrell (Flinders University)
Freny Tayebjee (Western Sydney University)
ACEN has also introduced National WIL Awards which were presented at the annual conference
Macquarie Universitys work with The Salvation Army won the Collaboration Award and the
Local Hero Award was won by RMIT for their relationship with Bakehouse Studios
Three $10000 ACEN research grants have been grantedThis is an exciting area where ACEN is
fostering WIL research capacity
The long serving chair of NZACE Katharine Hoskyn (AUT University) will stand down at the end
of 2016 Katharine has been chair for six years during which time Katharine forged strong
relationships between NZACE and other national WIL associations along with much needed
organisation around internal structures Katharine will be much missed as chair however she
will continue her involvement with the NZACE council Dr Jenny Fleming (AUT University) will
commence as chair of NZACE start of 2017
NZACE is currently in its 24th year and recently created a legacy document to capture the
history
The Asia Pacific Journal of Cooperative Education (APJCE) continues to grow well as an
international focused journal There are two upcoming special issues one from the WACE
International Research Symposium 2016 event (due end of 2016) and another from the ACEN
2016 event (due start of 2017)

The Western Australia chapter of ACEN will hold a research symposium in Perth 13 February

Past eventsThe NZACE annual conference occurred in April at the Takapuna Boat Club Auckland The
conference was well-attended and included attendees from Australia US and Canada A
particularly memorable moment was when the keynote presenter stopped midway through the
presentation to allow attendees to watch a pod of dolphins swim past
The ACEN national conference WIL 2020 Pushing the boundaries occurred in September (28-30)
at Macquarie University Sydney This was a very well attended conference of 260 attendees
from 10 countries and representatives from virtually every Australian Universities The
conference was the first paperless ACEN conference and was supported by a Conference App
which worked very well (and was also a source of amusement) Prior to the conference there
was a research roundtable held with 50 people attending
The NZ Vocational Education and Training (VET) Research Forum occurred in Wellington in
October and was attended by several NZACE members in order to bring these two association
closer together There were several insightful presentation from commissioners and
governmental analysts that highlighted the demand from the current NZ government
(presumably like many governments) to make more obvious paths linking study direction with
career outcomes

The Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) had a successful conference with
ACDEC on August 7-10 2016 in Moncton New Brunswick with the theme ldquoAttracting the Best
Talentrdquo At the conference Dr Norah McRae from the University of Victoria received the well-
deserved Albert S Barber Award for outstanding contributions made to the philosophy and
practice of co-operative education in Canada sponsored by the University of Waterloo To see

and a Professional Development event was held on November 2 2016 at the University of

WACE held its 2nd International Research Symposium sponsored by the University of Victoria on

was awarded to Dr Tracy Bowen from the University of Toronto Mississauga Canada for her
paper on ldquoBecoming a professional A comparative analysis between Canadian and Swedish WIL
student perspectivesrdquo This award recognizes work that provides evidence of the power of CWIE
on an academic discipline industry or students so we congratulate Tracy on being recognized for
her outstanding research in our field
NSEE held its 45th annual conference titled Experiential Education Institutional Impact
Diversity and Student Success on September 26-28 2016 in San Antonio Texas Those receiving
awards at the conference were as follows Outstanding Leader in Experiential Education Higher
Education Award Jeffrey Coker Elon University Outstanding Leader in Experiential Education

For many years NSEE has provided professional education through the Experiential Education
Academy (EEA) This professional education has core and elective courses that lead to a

understanding of the essential principles of assessment and evaluation in the context of CWIE

co-editors will be in charge of the summary chapter The chapter writing is in process and the
final manuscript is to be submitted to the publisher Routledge by December 2017 for

The European Network of Cooperative and Work Integrated Higher Education (CWIHE) is a three-
year project (2014-2017) funded under the ldquoStrategic Partnership for Higher Educationrdquo scheme
in Erasmus + programme It intends to establish a solid European Network which will face the
challenges presented by the model while spreading it at EU level as a valuable alternative to
tackle unemployment and promote entrepreneurship skills The next training for teaching staff
to occur as part of the project occurs in March 2017 at Lleida in Spain The 6th training for
teaching staff will be divided in two different parts consortium internal training and open to the
public training Dates 6-10 March 2017 (details about the Universitat de Lleida model and
Spanish context) and Dates 9-10 March 2017 (for those interested in developing this type of
model in the network)

At the WACE International Research Symposium held at Victoria Canada in June it was
announced that the Asia-Pacific region will be split into two separate regions with Prof Yasushi
Tanaka being appointed as vice-chair of the Asia region and Dr Karsten Zegwaard for vice-chair
of Oceania
Australia is exploring how to better engage STEM subjects with WIL after identifying this as an
area where there is limited engagement ndash especially at pre-university level
ACEN has announced the inaugural Life Membership awards These were award to three much
celebrated ACEN members
Carrol-joy Patrick (Griffith University)
Janice Orrell (Flinders University)
Freny Tayebjee (Western Sydney University)
ACEN has also introduced National WIL Awards which were presented at the annual conference
Macquarie Universitys work with The Salvation Army won the Collaboration Award and the
Local Hero Award was won by RMIT for their relationship with Bakehouse Studios
Three $10000 ACEN research grants have been grantedThis is an exciting area where ACEN is
fostering WIL research capacity
The long serving chair of NZACE Katharine Hoskyn (AUT University) will stand down at the end
of 2016 Katharine has been chair for six years during which time Katharine forged strong
relationships between NZACE and other national WIL associations along with much needed
organisation around internal structures Katharine will be much missed as chair however she
will continue her involvement with the NZACE council Dr Jenny Fleming (AUT University) will
commence as chair of NZACE start of 2017
NZACE is currently in its 24th year and recently created a legacy document to capture the
history
The Asia Pacific Journal of Cooperative Education (APJCE) continues to grow well as an
international focused journal There are two upcoming special issues one from the WACE
International Research Symposium 2016 event (due end of 2016) and another from the ACEN
2016 event (due start of 2017)

The Victoria and Tasmania chapters of ACEN will meet at the start of 2017 dates TBC
The next ACEN conference will be held in 2018
Past eventsThe NZACE annual conference occurred in April at the Takapuna Boat Club Auckland The
conference was well-attended and included attendees from Australia US and Canada A
particularly memorable moment was when the keynote presenter stopped midway through the
presentation to allow attendees to watch a pod of dolphins swim past
The ACEN national conference WIL 2020 Pushing the boundaries occurred in September (28-30)
at Macquarie University Sydney This was a very well attended conference of 260 attendees
from 10 countries and representatives from virtually every Australian Universities The
conference was the first paperless ACEN conference and was supported by a Conference App
which worked very well (and was also a source of amusement) Prior to the conference there
was a research roundtable held with 50 people attending
The NZ Vocational Education and Training (VET) Research Forum occurred in Wellington in
October and was attended by several NZACE members in order to bring these two association
closer together There were several insightful presentation from commissioners and
governmental analysts that highlighted the demand from the current NZ government
(presumably like many governments) to make more obvious paths linking study direction with
career outcomes
