WAAPA’s acclaimed percussion ensemble Defying Gravity and special guests present an enchanting night of music inspired by the sounds of India and the Middle East, performed outdoors under the stars. The night opens with a selection of epic Arabian love songs performed on Persian guitar and percussion by visiting Iranian musicians Arman Abednia and Iman Sepahsalari, accompanied by Pippa Lester and Defying Gravity’s Tao Issaro. To close the show, all the players will come together to perform the magical new work Karma, composed by Tao Issaro.

Jazz and the blues have been the source and inspiration behind most popular music from the 1960s onward. Jazz pioneers like Lee Morgan and Cannonball Adderley forged the beginnings of boogaloo and soul, which led to a new frontier for popular music. The Nueva Salsa Orchestra is the hottest Australian Latin band this side of Havana – and they power up with Defying Gravity in songs and dances that overflow with fun, energy and exhilaration. In an exciting collaboration, Decibel has commissioned new works from two of the most important living French composers in Europe, Eliane Radigue and Lionel Marchetti. This cutting-edge concert features the first work by Radigue for an Australian ensemble, Occam Ocean Hexa II, co-signed by Eliane Radigue and Carol Robinson, and new works from Lionel Marchetti for instruments and concrete sounds.

In 1966 across the Atlantic, a great rivalry was unfolding between two giants of the pop music world: The Beatles and The Beach Boys. The fierce competition between the groups gave rise to a pair of the most acclaimed albums of all time – The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and The Beatles' Revolver. To commemorate 50 years since the creation of these classic albums, WAAPA composers have responded with a series of new works exploring their enduring legacy.

Accompanist and coach par excellence Dr Graham Johnson returns to the WAAPA International Art Song Academy to lead masterclasses on the songs of Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert. The Academy commences on Saturday 2 July and culminates in a Gala Concert at Perth’s Government House Ballroom on Sunday 10 July.

This year WAAPA also welcomes internationally renowned soprano Dame Felicity Lott, who will lend her expertise in the performance of Mèlodie: the art of French song. Dame Felicity is one of England’s finest singers and has performed in the great opera houses and recital halls of the world.

This concert opens with a truly towering achievement in the repertoire for piano duet, Schubert’s beloved Fantasy in F minor. Movements from other great works by Debussy, Arensky, Guastavino and Piazzola will frame the mellifluously melodic Valse and Romance (for six hands) by Rachmaninov. The hilarious Grand Galop Chromatique by Liszt and joyous out-pouring from the ever popular Scaramouche by Milhaud conclude an evening of wonderful music.

Duettes features the queens of the WA jazz scene; Libby Hammer, Victoria Newton, Allira Wilson and Elle Deslandes accompanied by renowned guitarist Freddie Grigson. They will be performing all the songs on the album including Epistrophy (Theolonious Monk), Almost Like Being In Love (Frederick Loewe & Alan Jay Lerner) and Life On Mars by David Bowie plus more well loved standards. London-based Australian pianist, Zubin Kanga is internationally renowned for his performances of contemporary music. He has been invited to perform at the BBC Proms, Aldeburgh and Borealis Festival (Norway) as well as appearing as soloist with the London Sinfonietta and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Zubin has collaborated with many of the world’s leading composers and commissioned more than 50 new works. He is a member of Ensemble Offspring, one of Australia’s leading contemporary music ensembles, and has also performed with the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Ensemble Plus-Minus, Endymion Ensemble, Halcyon, Synergy Percussion, and the Kreutzer Quartet, as well as performing piano duos with Rolf Hind and Thomas Adès.

The first draft of Charles Ives’ Fourth Symphony was completed 100 years ago. This groundbreaking work was so complex that it required at least two conductors and was not performed in its entirety for nearly fifty years. A dizzying blend of popular music, avant garde techniques and transcendental philosophy – it has remained one of the pinnacles of 20th century music. To commemorate the centenary of its composition, WAAPA composers have created a series of new works exploring a myriad of implications of Ives’ “climactic masterpiece”.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2015

DIDO AND AENEAS SPIEGELTENT, WAAPA LAWNS

Henry Purcell’s famous opera Dido and Aeneas, a poignant tale of ill-fated lovers, is restored to its original musical dimensions by Australian pianist and conductor, Geoffrey Lancaster. The earliest surviving libretto for the work, dating from 1689, contains material for which the music has been lost, including an entire Prologue, a chorus at the end of Act 2, eight dances and a spoken Epilogue. Now, thanks to Lancaster's sensitive reconstruction of the missing music, audiences can savour this classic English three-act opera in its miraculous entirety.

Albert Herring contains some of Britten’s wittiest musical writing, exploring parody and caricature to the full. The comic chamber opera is set at the turn of the 20th century in an imaginary East Suffolk town called Loxford. No virtuous women can be found in Loxford so the meek and mild Albert Herring is chosen and crowned the town’s first ‘May King’. However, Albert is less than delighted with his new title and dreams of rebellion. Frustrated by small-town morals and gossip, Albert decides to set matters straight after a rum-laced lemonade or two at the May Day celebrations, setting off with his prize money on a night of debauchery. Albert Herring is one of the most endearing, light-hearted and outright funny operas you will ever see.

Vortex draws into its powerful current four outstanding Australian choreographers whose works encompass neo-classical and contemporary dance. Gareth Belling, a former Queensland Ballet member, has choreographed 26 works since 2005. Award winning WAAPA alumnus Paulina Quinteros has had a long and varied career dancing for Paul Mercurio’s Australian Choreographic Ensemble Dance Company (ACE), Joanne Endicott (Tanztheatre of Wuppertal) and Celestine Hennermann, Dramaturge Ballett Frankfurt/Das T. James O'Hara splits his time between Australia and Belgium where he works with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. James has performed internationally and was choreographic assistant to Marina Mascarell for Mongrel (Gothenburg Opera) and is currently assisting Michael Keagan Dolan on his creation In Nocentes for the British Youth Dance Company. WAAPA Dance Lecturer, Justin Rutzou has danced in some of the country’s most prestigious companies including Expressions, Sydney Dance Company and Queensland Ballet. This much talent makes for a very exciting and enticing first season of dance.

The graduating dance students are poised for big things and after witnessing their versatility and energy in this rich and varied season you will know why. Acclaimed Dutch choreographer Nils Christe returns with Purcell Pieces, a neo-classical work that soars with breathtaking pace. European-based Australian choreographer Lewis Major explores the relationship between theatre, movement, light, sound and technology. Co-founders of Jukstapoz Dance Company, Christine Gouzelis and WAAPA graduate Paul Blackman create their signature choreographic mix of movement, physical theatre and text. Rounding out the program, Kim McCarthy and Andries Weidemann have chosen the most beautiful solos, duets and scenes from Tchaikovsky’s greatest ballets; Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker.

Motion State pulls exciting, young choreographic talent into its orbit from across Australia and overseas to create energetic new works for the LINK dancers. WAAPA graduate, Isabella Stone was the recipient of the Emerging Artist Award at the 2014 WA Dance Awards. She has presented her own choreography at the State Theatre Centre, Dance Compass in Sydney, STRUTathon and Shortcuts. Award-winning dancer/choreographer and WAAPA alumnus, Scott Ewen has toured internationally with ADT and most recently he has been working with ilDance in Sweden from where we welcome the company’s Artistic Directors Israel Iloni and Lee Brummer. British born Brummer has danced with the world famous Emanuel Gat and Bat Dor Dance Companies and has recently choreographed segments of Billy Elliot at the Gothenburg Opera. Originally from Tel Aviv, Israel Aloni is an international independent choreographer, educator, guest performer and entrepreneur. His long list of credits include GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Odelya Kuperberg Dance Group and Sasha Waltz and Guests. The wealth of experience brought to this season is sure to make a big impact on LINK and its audience.

LINK Dance Company is a graduate dance company – the only one of its kind in Australia. Through LINK, dancers have the unique opportunity to gain professional experience whilst also being able to further their research interests. In 2016 LINK looks forward to collaborating on Raewyn Hill’s new work for Co3 as part of the MoveMe Festival in September. As well as creating their own season of short works in Studio A at WAAPA in October, LINK will undertake a European and an Eastern States tour.

Originally from Tel Aviv, Israel Aloni is an international independent choreographer, educator, guest performer and entrepreneur. His long list of credits include GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Odelya Kuperberg Dance Group and Sasha Waltz and Guests. The wealth of experience brought to this season is sure to make a big impact on LINK and its audience.

LINK Dance Company is a graduate dance company – the only one of its kind in Australia. Through LINK, dancers have the unique opportunity to gain professional experience whilst also being able to further their research interests. New works are commissioned, with some also restaged by seminal artists. The company regularly performs locally, interstate and overseas.

In 2016 LINK looks forward to collaborating on Raewyn Hill’s new work for Co3 as part of the MoveMe Festival in September. As well as creating their own season of short works in Studio A at WAAPA in October, LINK will undertake a European and an Eastern States tour.

The last of Shakespeare's great political tragedies chronicles the life of the legendary Roman general, Caius Marcius. When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on Marcius to be her hero and defender, bestowing on him the honorary title of Coriolanus. But when Coriolanus seeks political power, his arrogant pride turns the common people against him and he is exiled from Rome. In seeking retribution, Coriolanus forges alliances that will lead to his downfall. WAAPA is proud to welcome back acclaimed British actor/director Michael Jenn (The Trial, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui) to direct Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge.

WAAPA welcomes theatre maker Bagryana Popov to direct Anton Chekhov's masterful portrait of the Prozorova sisters and their elusive dream of returning to Moscow from the provincial town in which they now live. Masterfully blending comedy and pathos, the play captures a restlessness and yearning that remain enduringly modern. Popov has directed critically acclaimed adaptations of Chekov’s work, including her 2009 physical theatre work Progress and Melancholy, based on Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, which won three Green Room Awards, including Best Direction.

Based on the 18th century French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a bitingly witty masterpiece of seduction and revenge. Elegantly and sinisterly, the plot unfolds: The Marquise and the Vicomte are accomplices in a game of sexual corruption, deceit and betrayal. Completely oblivious to the emotional destruction they cause, they scheme together to seduce two innocent victims.

Their clever game of passion and manipulation, played out in Parisian salons and bedrooms, turns in on itself when the Vicomte realises that he is truly in love. The 1988 film version of Christopher Hampton’s play, Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, won three Academy Awards.

Howard Barker pulls no punches in Victory, a historical play set in the wreckage of post-Cromwellian England. It's 1661 and Charles II has been restored to the throne. On the new king's vengeful orders, the body of John Bradshaw, the judge who signed Charles I's death warrant, is to be exhumed and publicly displayed. Bradshaw's widow sets off on a journey searching for her husband's abused remains. Meanwhile at court, King Charles II is forced to appease the influential money-men who are responsible for his restoration. Barker's drama is epic political theatre that, in the age of Kosovo, Bosnia and Iraq, remains as pertinent today as it was when it was written.

A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens' immortal novel of revolution and romance, was adapted for the stage in 1935 by John Gielgud and Terence Rattigan, two of the brightest theatrical talents of their day. It has been modernised by one of Australia’s most gifted and imaginative young directors, the multi-award winning Adam Spreadbury-Maher. Retaining the thrill and tension of the French Revolutionary setting but merging it with a modern, East London aesthetic, this production focuses on the love triangle that lies at the heart of Dickens’ classic story. WAAPA welcomes Hugh Hodgart, Director of Drama, Dance, Production and Screen at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, to Perth to direct this exciting ensemble piece.

At the end of World War II, a group of young American university students felt alienated by society's stifling conventionality and rampant materialism. With Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs at its core, the Beat Generation expressed their anti-establishment attitudes through their dress, lifestyle and art, developing a reputation as new bohemian hedonists. They fashioned a literature that was bold, straightforward and expressive. In this exciting new production, the 3rd Year Acting students, collaborating with their Jazz musican counterparts, explore the cultural impact of this highly influential movement.

The films are created by the 2016 Screen Academy class of producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, sound recordists, production designers and editors. The Academy Films feature WAAPA 3rd year Acting students on screen as well as music composers, costume designers and sound students. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton’s musical is the story of ordinary people in an extraordinary situation. Under the watchful eye of team coach Father O’Donnell, John and Del both show enough promise to pursue careers as professional footballers. They’re just two regular teenagers who dream of nothing more than girls and football... but as they become swept up in the events that engulf their community, each has to decide whether or not to follow their hearts. This modern spin on Puccini’s opera La Boheme tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive in the wildly bohemian days of New York in the early 1990s. Campbell is cheerleader royalty at Truman High School and her senior year should prove the most cheertastic – she's been named captain of the squad! But an unexpected rezoning forces Campbell to spend her final year of high school at the neighbouring, hard-knock Jackson High School. Despite having the deck stacked against her, Campbell befriends the dance crew girls and, along with their headstrong and hardworking leader Danielle, manages to form a powerhouse squad for the ultimate competition – the National Championships.
