agan is one of the architectural wonders of the world. It lies on the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River and
about 290 km southwest of Mandalay and 700 km north of Yangon. It was the capital of the first Myanmar Empire that flourished from the 11th to the 13th centuries AD. The founder of the Bagan Empire was King Anawrahta (1044-1077).
There were altogether 55 Kings, according to the chronicles of the Bagan Dynasty (11th and 12th centuries). Most of the pagoda-construction was done towards the later part of the dynasty
when Bagan was at the height of its power and prosperity. During that period over 4,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day.
The Bagan temple falls into one of two broad categories: the stupa-style solid temple and the vault-style hollow temple.
Bagan is also the center of Myanmar lacquer-ware industry.

nle Lake is a freshwater lake located in the Nyaungshwe Township of
Taunggyi District of Shan State. It is the second largest lake in Myanmar with an
estimated surface area of 116 km2, and one of the highest at an elevation of 880 m. During the dry season, the average water depth is 2.1 m, with the deepest point being 3.7 m, but during the rainy season this can increase by 1.5 m. The watershed area for the lake lies to a large extent to the north and west of the lake. The lake drains through the Nam Pilu or Balu Chaung on
its southern end. There is a hot spring, Khaung-daing on its northwestern shore.
Although the lake is not large, it contains a number of endemic species. Over twenty species of snails and nine species of fish are found nowhere else in the world. It hosts approximately 20,000 brown and black head migratory seagulls in November, December and January. The people of Inle Lake (called Intha) live in numerous small villages along the lake's shores and on the lake.

G: Myanmar is the nomenclature which has been called by its citizens to describe their homeland, though Burma has been used by the British before. Because of its natural resources, it’s also known as Golden Land and for its plenty of monuments and temple, as “Land of Pagodas” too.
T: I hear about it as one of the places of Golden Chersonese.
G: Geographically it’s the largest than any other countries of this peninsula, sharing borders with Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. Let’s say like this, as it is with the total area of 676,577 sq. km., it is twice the size of Vietnam or rather approximately the size of Great Britain and France combined.
T: How about the climate? G: It enjoys generally a tropical climate with
three seasons, namely, the Rainy, the Cool and the Hot. You may choose the time by yourself to visit to the numerous natural scenic attractions. The country is made up of 7 States and 7 Divisions.
T: And the nationalities and the population? G: The term Myanmar embraces all our
nationalities. Ethnic people live in racial harmony, with the bold Bamar, colorful Kachine, simple Kayah, fun-loving Kayin, courageous Chin, gentle Mon, serious Rakhine and straight-forward Shan nationalities forming the majority of the population. Of the over 60 million people, each nationality has its own language and dialect. The official language is Myanmar, although English is widely spoken.
T: I’ve read about the country that 80 percent of its people are Buddhists.
G: A predominantly Buddhist country with its countless pagodas and temples, the people are also free to espouse Christianity, Islam, Hinduism or other faiths. Animism and Spirit worshipping are also practiced.
T: Tell me about its historical background concisely.
G: Putting aside the glory of Pyu Kingdoms starting from the first century of Christian era, I’ve to begin with King Anora-hta(flourished 1044-77) of Bagan which consolidated the whole country into the first Myanmar Empire in the first half of the 11th century, well before the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. This Empire lasted for 200 years, but collapsed due to the invasion of the Mongols. Though the warring states flourished later, some able monarchs tried to unify it, only when it became successful with the emergence of King Bayint-naung (fl. 1554-81) of Hanthawady for the second time and King Alaung-mintara (fl. 1752-60) of Konbaung for the third time. It was during the zenith of the last dynasty that the colonialists moved into it. The country became gradually a British colony but with severe resistance after three wars between 1824 and 1885. During the World War II, it was occupied by the Japanese Imperialists from 1944 till the return of the Allied Forces in 1945. Its people never yield to the aggressors, but strived for independence so much so that on January 4, 1948, it restores its normal status outside the yoke of colonialism.
