Criticism• Waste of money
• The competition venues are not the authentic surroundings to demonstrate occupations or trades
• The projects (the competition tasks) in competions give very narrow impression about the trade
• The degree of difficulty and connectivity to real working life
• Competition against each others is not always accepted as an appropriate learning method
• Coaching increases teacher´s work (without extra salary)
• Eager teachers forget the other students

HAMK University of Applied Sciences / AKVA projects (2000 – 2007)
(AKVA means “Improvement of vocational skills through coaching and competition”)
has trained vocational teachers, workplace tutors and other personnel to be specialists in the area of vocational skills competition activity and to the training of vocational top excellence.
Altogether during this process more than 3000 people have attended the training.

Skills Trainers´ Academy (est. 1.1.2008) operates as a member of Skills network.
The purpose is to improve
the quality and attraction of VET;
the vocational skills of young people by means of competitions and coaching;
the competence of VET teachers and trainers;
the national and international collaboration between VET institutions and the world of work.

The Main Actions of Skills Trainers´ Academy are
Training of vocational competition specialists and maintaining the network of such specialists;
Disseminating the good practices in the field of VET;
Research and production of information, materials, reports and proceedings;
Supporting national and local skills-projects and encouraging the collaboration between project members;
Supporting the international cooperation in the field on VET and competitions

Excellence in skills coaching and training (1/2)
The three steps process towards excellence in skills coaching and training system is developed and maintained by Skills Finland.
The system helps to keep up Finnish expertise, skilfulness and competence.
The training of young professionals is designed and carried out in cooperation with vocational education and training providers and business life.

Basic Training
National Team Training, Team Camps
Developing Special Skills
The basic training is initiated by selecting a group of motivated, skilled young people of each trade.
The most advanced candidates are selected to go on further in the next step in the training.
The competitors for the national team are selected.
This step of training is targeted at developing the special skills on individual basis set as a goal for the international skills competition.
This will make it possible to compete in international skills competitions with the other top
professionals.
