The DuBois-Hamer Institute for Academic Achievement (DHIAA) was established to promote student success through community and campus partnerships. The Institute seeks support to
implement community-based programs that provide a bridge between the campus and the communities from which the students of color come to CSUN. Goals and initiatives fall under three categories: 1) Academic targets; 2) Community Objectives; and 3) Scholarly Inquiry. Activities for the 2016-2017 academic year included: Men of color enquiry & student poster sessions fall 2016, spring 2017; 2nd annual Black Youth Guidance Forum Feb 2017; Focus groups on Health Disparity of Black men in higher education in Spring 2017. We are currently working on a publication called “An Exploratory Study of Black Males’ Health-Related Attitudes, Perceptions and Beliefs in Higher Education.” The DuBois Hamer Institute for Academic Achievement also received its second research grant from the Human Interaction Research Institute to conduct an empirical study of how nonprofit organizations in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles currently serve Black women. It has been a great year and we anticipate that the 2017-18 academic year will continue to focus on improved services for communities of color through our campus and community partnerships. We have recently partnered with the LAUSD superintendent for Local District Northwest for our collaborate with the 3rd annual Black Youth Guidance Forum. The DHIAA advisory has added a few new additions in 2017-18 to include Jasmin Dantzler, Community Director, Park South, Office of Student Housing and Conference Services; Allison Dormanesh, DHIAA Research Assistant; Dr. Marquita Gammage; Associate Professor, Africana Studies; Isaiah Green, Senior Community Director—Park North, Student Housing & Conference Services; and Vanessa Villavicencio, Graduate Student Recruitment Coordinator, College of Education. THEME: THE HEALTHY HABITS AND LITERACY IMPERATIVE FOR COMMUNITIES OF COLOR
The Black Youth Guidance Forum (BYGF) is a day-long leadership program for CSUN
students in the Africana Studies, Urban Studies option, Credential candidates, and
Liberal Studies majors. We will also include African American youth and other youth
of color, school stakeholders (e.g. parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, and
staff), and nonprofit organizations in Los Angeles County. The BYGF serves:
1. to promote racial uplift, health & wellness, college preparation, and leadership
development to our target population
2. to provide assistance and training in culturally relevant practices for
preparatory students at CSUN and school stakeholders
3. to establish a college collaboratory (community partnerships) with nonprofit
organizations for understanding and developing clear pathways for African
American youth and other youth of color to enter post-secondary education
