WOOD-
CRAFT:
LOVESPOO
NS
WHAT IS A LOVESPOON?
A wooden spoon carved to show that you loved someone!
If you wanted to marry them you would give them a lovespoon
WHERE DID THEY COME FROM? They first started this tradition all the way
back in the 17th Century!! That’s the sixteen hundreds
It began as a plain spoon
But over time people started adding their own decorations and carvings to them to make them pretty and unique!
This is much prettier!!
THE FIRST LOVESPOON!!
The first lovespoon we have is from Wales
It is displayed in the St Fagans National History Museum and it is from all the way back in 1667,
THAT MEANS IT IS 346 YEARS OLD!
This is it!
SYMBOLS Lovespoons needed to be pretty and have
lots of thought put into them.
So each symbol carved into them would have a different meaning:
ANCHORSailors used to carve them at sea for their girlfriends back home so they used to put anchors there to show what they worked as.
OTHERS ARE MORE OBVIOUS Horseshoe is for luck
Hearts are for love
Bells are for marriage
Crosses were for faith
Wheels were to show support for your loved one
A lock was to show security
HOW ARE THEY MADE? There are three basic stages to making a
love spoon: 1. Design
2. ROUGH CUT
TOOLS These are some of the tools used:
3. FINE TUNING
THANK YOU
MR OXLEY
