Yosef Mendelevich began to develophis Jewish identity as a young man living under Soviet oppression in Riga.In 1970 at the age of 22 and already aveteran of the Jewish Underground,Yosef made news around the worldwith a daring attempt to escape theSoviet Union with a small group of fellow “refuseniks” on a small tourist

aircraft. Before they could board the plane, they were arrested by the KGB,resulting in the infamous Leningrad Trial which generated international attention. The defendants exhibited great bravery incourt. The international uproar moderated two of the death sentences.Rabbi Mendelevich will share his incredible story of how he survivedeleven years in the Gulag, resisting all attempts to vanquish his bodyand soul, while at the same time deepening his trust in G‐d and loveof Israel.Worldwide pressure helped to finally gain his release to Israel. Hemarried, became the father of seven, obtained rabbinical ordination,and happily teaches Torah in Jerusalem. Yosef's talks about his personal spiritual and physical odyssey are compelling and inspiring.
