R A M S n a m e t h e i r b e s t Captain Nick Potter claims prize also won by current AFL youngsters.

Captain Nick Potter, from Pennant Hills in Sydney, has won the S R Watson Medal as the NSW/ACT RAMS' best

and fairest player. Potter, 18, won from Pennant Hills

teammate Brad Cross, while Jared Kahlefeldt, from Eastlakes MClVWagga Tigers, also polled well.

Potter (below) was outstanding in the midfield for the RAMS ail year and was recently named in the National AFL Under-18 All-Australian team, selected after the National AFL Under-18 Championships in Melbourne.

Nick Potter (left) and Stinim Daly hold the National AFL Under 18 Championships' Division Two trophy.

The RAMS won the Division Two title. A wingman with great speed and skills,

Kahlefeldt was awarded the Dane Quade Memorial trophy for the best first-year player.

Four members of the RAMS' match committee, including coach Rod Carter, were asked to award votes on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis for each match played.

The RAMS' presentation night was held last Saturday at Ainslie Football Club. Earlier in the day, the RAMS went down to the Western Jets in their final TAC Cup match for the year, 6.10 (46) to 10.18 (78).

Former winners of the S R Watson medal include St Kilda's leading possession getter this year, Lenny Hayes, also from Pennant Hills, who won the medal in 1997 and 1998 before being drafted by the Saints, and Sydney Swan Ben Fixter, who collected the prize in 1999. Sydney dynamo Adam Schneider finished second in 2001.

Nick Potter (for the game against North Ballarat), Ed Clarke (Murray Bushrangers), Brad Cross (Geelong), Kyle Archibald (South

Australia) and Adam Leechman (Western Jets) were voted best on ground in the RAMS' representative matches.

L a e - s e a s o n s u r p r i s e s The top-four however looks to be settled.

The end of season surprises started last weekend, however, they had no impact on the finals make-up, after UNSW/ES and

Campbelltown all but confirmed they would take part in the September action.

After a spirited and inspired win against the Eagles, Troy Luff said his Balmain team will be "pretty confident playing Campbelltown on our ground." Since setting his side's focus on having fun and enjoying themselves, theTigers will now be looking to get themselves off the bottom by scoring a fourth win before the end of the season.

Kangaroos coach Craig McBrien expects another good performance against Balmain, after two strong victories against theTigers this year. "Balmain will have a bit of confidence going into the game, but we won't be taking our finger off the pulse now," said McBrien, after his team's decisive win against Pennant Hills.

Mick Knuppel scheduled a 6am training session on Monday, following the Eagles' second loss to the bottom side. "They (Balmain) wanted it more than we did," explained Knuppel, who described as "unacceptable" his charges' performance. East Coast defeated UNSW/ES at home in round three, and will "treat the next two games as finals to try and simulate a September-type atmosphere," Knuppel said.

The Bulldogs continued their great late-season form, handing North Shore its first defeat of the season. "We now have the confidence to know we can go all the way," said Bulldogs coach Tim Jones. Facing the up-and-down Eagles, the Bulldogs will want to avoid any complacency after last week's big win. "Importantly, we need to back up," Jones said.

The Bombers will have no time to lament their perfect record being broken, with coach Chris Rourke having to turn their attention to a pre semifinal clash with St George. "We've got a week, so we should be a bit more prepared to run and chase," he said. In reference to their first loss of the season, Rourke admitted "we played against a side that was pretty hard and hungry, and we still tried to play pretty football when there was a challenge."

Cameron Tempieton was a star for the Bulldogs, kicking seven goal:

Crows coach Glen Garner believes his side needs to "make sure we're on our game and put four quarters together" to see where they're at leading into the finals. "I don't think they'll (North Shore) be too worried about it," were Garner's thoughts on the Bombers' loss, however St George will gain confidence from the Bombers' newly discovered vulnerability.

Western Suburbs has three of its best players due back this week, and will be looking to beat Ftennant Hills for the second time this season. "We played a good game of footy last time, and will need to do the same," said Magpies coach Laine Spencer in the lead-up to the encounter at Wagener Oval.

Despite having seven forced changes going into last week's must-win game against Campbelltown, Demons chief Dan Ryan said his players "showed a complete lack of fight and pride in one's own performance." The Demon's must now win their last two games and rely on either Balmain or Western Suburbs beating the Kangaroos to scrape into the finals.

Although the pressure to remain undefeated might be off the Bombers, they will have to deal with the knowledge that teams are coming, and that they are "only human" after all.

Innovative Eagles

The 2002 East Coast Eagles Ae erve Grade premiership team.

East Coast was the first club to strike an AFL partnership.

East Coast Eagles Football Club was formed in November, 1999, emerging from the Baulkham Hills' senior team. 'Baulko', as it

became known, was established in 1976 and first entered the Sydney AFL in 1993.

For a short time after East Coast's formation, the Eagles and the Falcons operated side-by-side under one administration. However in 2001, the seniors officially separated from the juniors after 25 years operating as Baulkham Hills Australian Football Club.

The master plan for East Coast includes a long-term strategy to foster junior development at all clubs in its zone and to establish a widening base under the Eagles' umbrella. The Falcons however, remain one of the strongest junior clubs in Sydney, with two teams in almost every age group.

The formation of East Coast, in partnership with AFL club West Coast Eagles, was a revolutionary move in its lateral thinking and creativity. This alliance quickly spawned partnerships between other Sydney AFL clubs and AFL clubs.

The history books in years to come will show that Peter Physick was the true founder of the East Coast Eagles concept and the power behind this ground-breaking initiative. Peter has been the Eagfes' president since day one, and along with his four terms as president in the 'Baulko days', is the longest serving president in Falcons-Eagles' history.

The new clubs original guernsey was West Coast's away guernsey, and its first coach was Tim Jones, who is currently coaching the UNSW-ES Bulldogs,

Baulkham Hills' Under-18 Falcons won the club's first Sydney AFL premiership in 1977, and the Eagles managed to win their first

visit: aftnswact.com.au

premiership in their debut year in 2000. The Under-18s again also won the flag that year. Both wins were under the coaching of Les Jarjoura and his assistant, current Under-18 coach Trevor Hangan. Jarjoura coached Falcons and Eagles teams to four consecutive Grand Finals, wining three premierships.

Last year the club broke through for its first Reserve Grade flag under coach Scott Abercrombie who, at the end of that season, had played 327 games, making him one of only three players to have notched more than 300 games with the Falcons or Eagles. The others are Jason Crawford and Steve Merkel.

Daniel Bylsma capped an outstanding season in 2002 by taking out the Sanders Medal in Reserve Grade, with Scott Abercrombie the leading goal kicker in Reserve Grade. Graham Jones won the Phelan Medal in 1995.

The support of the West Coast Eagles has never waned, especially from their Melbourne-based manager, Stephen Nash, and their CEO, Trevor Nisbett.

Both clubs are delighted to be associated with the Northside Junior Association and all representative teams in the NJA play in Eagles' guernseys.

For the past four years the East Coast Eagles have played home games at Macquarie University's Roger Sheeran Oval, but ongoing discussion with Baulkham Hills Council could see the club develop its own home.

The club has excellent corporate support, a committed administration, an enthusiastic coaching staff led by Michael Knuppel, and an emerging team list, placing it in a strong position to win its first senior premiership.

Entering the final round of the SFA, Sydney Uni is sitting securely on top of the First and Reserve Grade ladders, earning a week's rest

for both sides in the opening week of the finals. The First Grade top-five now looks settled,

and results would have to be extremely favourable for UTS to sneak in. Third spot is still wide open however, with Holroyd-Parramatta and the Sharks the two most likely contenders to fill this place. In Reserve Grade, there are a number of permutations for the final three positions in the five, with the clash at North Dalton Park between Wollongong and Manly vital for both clubs.

Last weekend saw two critical matches between finals contenders. At Gipps Road, Holroyd-Parramatta led pacesetters Sydney Uni at each change and an upset looked on the cards. But the Students responded with a dominating final term, to record a comfortable 26-point win.

| It was a similar situation at the Village Green, where a UTS win over UNSW/ES would have left it with a real chance of making the First Grade finals for the first time. The Bats held an 11-point lead at three-quarter time, but were no match for the home side in the final term, going down by 14 points.

In other matches, the Southern Sharks won . as expected against the Nor-West Jets at | Bensons Lane, but were pushed all day by the : determined home side.

Manly-Warringah trailed all day against ; South-West Sydney at Weldon, a late goal by \ the Wolves securing them a five-point win, their

third on the trot. Macquarie Uni was always in charge against

Penrith at Dukes Oval, the Kookas finally returning to the winners' list after a long absence.

Predicted winners for round 18: South-West Sydney, Wollongong, Sydney Uni, Holroyd-Parramatta and the Southern Sharks.

W01VES ABE PART OF THE

Manly-Warringah quickly developed into a respected club.

The Manly-Warringah Wolves were formed in 1969. Founding members Harry Marston, George Klause and Bruce Hutton discovered

enough interest on the northern beaches for an Australian Rules team to be formed. The club started in the SFL Under-20 competition.

The following year Manly-Warringah joined the newly formed Sydney District Association. The formation of this competition was the culmination of several clubs' efforts, none more so than Manly, and in particular Harry Marston.

The Wolves have grown and became a dominant performer in the SFA. After several Grand Final disappointments, the Wolves scored the ultimate in 1985, winning premierships in all three grades. Manly-Warringah has also won First Grade premierships in 1990,1995 and 1996, with victory in the Reserve Grade in 1988, 1993 and 2002, and wins in the Under-20s in 1991 and 1993.

The club boasts many individual award winners. Arguably its proudest moment was in 2000 when Harry Marston received from the Australian Government, on behalf of the Queen, an Australian Sports Medal, recognising 30 years of service to Australian football.

The club has produced Snow Medalists in Laurie Lyttleton. Ted Dolkens, Clauvis 'Zoots' Zaarour.Tim Anderson and Peter Robertson; McFarlane Medallists 'Roily' Parrott, Leigh Adams, Zaarour and Oliver Crombach, and Hart Medallists Russell Clack and Wayne Johnston.

Jaret Hogarth has played the most games for the club (265) and has kicked more than 1300 goals, winning the competition goal kicking award six times.

Other 250-game players are Tim Anderson and Sean Adams, with John Volkavich, Paul Larke, Leigh Adams, Grant Wright, Glenn Hooker and Justin Waters playing 200 games.

The Wolves have been well represented by the Adams family over the past 35 years, with Leigh being president 14 times, and wife Dawn - who has been social secretary, secretary, treasurer and committee member - is our only female life member. Dawn reckons she has sold almost 8000 hot dogs and about 85,000 beers!

The Wolves have always tried to be fiercely competitive on the field, but would like to think they have also made many friends in the Sydney football family.

I'm one of the last ones to get strapped, and I'm always third or fourth to walk out onto the ground. What do you wish you did differently? In the 2000 Grand Final we were only about a goal down. I got a Stknetre penalty but then kicked it straight to a Pennant Hills player, who went back down the ground to score a goal. Monthly mobile bill? About $220, and that's not work-related so I think I've got a problem there. Do you wear your socks up or down? Down always. I don't think I've ever worn them up, I probably should with the legs I've got but it feels more comfortable. Do you spend much time in the gym? Only twice a week. Favourite movie? In the Name of the Father. What would you like to be better at? Be a bit quicker off the mark. Are you going away at the end of the season? I'm going on our footy trip to the Gold Coast. What did you do last Saturday before the game? I did the Spit to Manly walk with a lady friend.
