Greg Sheley 10th Season at Lane (216-68) 17th Season Overall (377-135)

Sheley has built the Titans program in his own image. His teams play aggressive, up-tempo basketball on offense, hardnosed man-to-man defense. Lane players have excelled in the classroom, in the community, and on the floor. The record of the program under Sheley’s leadership speaks volumes: 216 wins, the most wins by a Titan basketball coach; seven straight 20-win seasons; five Southern Region Titles (in the past six years); the school’s first ever consecutive 30 win seasons 04-05 and 05-06; and seven straight NWAACC Tournament appearances which includes two straight NWAACC Titles. If all that isn’t enough, the teams current 63 straight home game-winning streak is currently the nations longest at the collegiate level. Sheley was named Lane’s fifth head basketball coach in the summer of 1999. Prior to Lane, Greg coached at Butte College in Oroville, CA (1992-98) where he had already established himself as one of the best young coaches in the game. While at Butte, his programs won three conference championships, made it to the State Championship tournament twice, had two 30 win seasons, and compiled a 161-67 record (.706). During his college playing days, Sheley earned basketball and baseball letters and was twice selected to the all conference teams at Sierra Junior College before continuing his athletic career at California State University-Chico, where he was a guard/wing for the Wildcat’s basketball team. Sheley graduated from CSU-Chico with a BA in Physical Education in 1990 and later returned to receive his MA in 1995. Greg was born December 8, 1966 in Chico, CA. Raised in Chico he was a high school standout in basketball and baseball at Chico High School. His wife, Sharrie, also works at Lane as a health instructor. They have three children: Kerrisa (11), Kaylin (7), and Nathan (1).

Kevin Grumbley 10th Season at Lane

Biographical Sketch Born and raised locally, nobody has a better grasp of the high school basketball scene than Kevin Grumbley. You can’t win if you don’t have the right players, and for nearly ten years now, it has been Kevin’s job to assess and recruit talented players with the right skill sets to assure the Titans continue their winning ways. In addition to recruiting, Kevin works with the Titan forwards and centers. In 2003 Kevin received his Bachelor’s Degree from Western Oregon University in Physical Education with a minor in Business Management. Grumbley, 33, enters his 13th season as a basketball coach. He entered the field of coaching at age 18 following a successful career as a high school athlete. During the 1994 season he was the 8th gradeboys coach at North Douglas Middle School. During the 1996-1997, and 1997-1998 seasons he was Head Junior Varsity Girl’s Basketball Coach for North Douglas High School. His teams compiled an impressive combined mark of 30 wins and 9 losses. Both North Douglas teams finished second in their league standings. Before joining Coach Sheley’s staff in the fall of 1999, he was the Head Varsity VolleyballCoach at Yoncalla High School. He also helped out with the North Douglas Track & Field program, coaching his younger brother to a State Championship in the long jump. Kevin has coached with AAU teams and worked several different camps and clinics including the U of O Girls camp and Lane Community College Girls camp.

Add two Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships in the last three years, plus four consecutive NWAACC Southern Region championships and throw in a nation's best 63-game home winning streak, and the answer is LCC's very own women's basketball team. The Titans are ready to kick off what looks to be a promising 2008-09 season, and although they are young, with just three sophomores on the roster, this team is ready to show that it's worthy of being mentioned with the great Titan teams to which this school has grown accustomed. Head Coach Greg Sheley expects his three returning sophomores, Sheena Cole, Melissa Montes and Jennifer Kimbrow, to lay the groundwork for what he hopes is another successful run at the NWAACCs. "The three returning sophomores will form the foundation of this team, and they are going to have to be the leaders of this team. If those kids can lead by example that'll do a lot for us." Sheley commented that the LCC student body's high expectations for the Titans are not unwarranted. "We've really established ourselves with what we accomplished in the past six or seven years. That being said, with nine freshmen this year, we're a young team," Sheley said. Sheley admits he expects growing pains, but he doesn't think that will stop his team from reaching its potential. "I know we have talent, but it will take time for these freshmen to get used to thestronger, faster and more competitive level of college basketball ... but I'm confident." "Our goal is to win the Southern Region, and if we do that, that will put us in a group with the top five or six teams, and then we have a chance to get a lot accomplished," Sheley said, seemingly unconcerned about setting the bar too high for his young team.

Page 4

With one of the most successful women's programs in the nation, the Titans have a lot of success to fall back on. But don't tell that to the players. "We've got a lot of good players and a lot of talent ... we know we can win a championship, and I think we all want it," Montes said. Kimbrow believes the incoming freshmen are ready as well. "I'm excited about the players that are coming and I think we will all play really well together." Just how will this Titan team win games? Without getting too specific, Sheley plans to do a little bit of everything. "We'll mostly, rely on pressure defense which a lot of time results in easy buckets, so I like to get up and down the floor, play more of a fast paced game and get some easy buckets. But we can also slow it down, run more of a power game, and score inside." Sheley will be the first person to tell you it will take everyone buying into the team-first concept in order for this team, or for that matter any team, to win and be successful. "What's most important is having a common goal. As long as players share the same goal when they are on floor andwant to try hard and win games together, winning becomes a lot easier," Sheley explained. He added that LCC's recent winning ways makes it that much easier. "We've had such success, players come in wanting to buy into the team concept so they can be a part of this program." Having players like Montes doesn't hurt either. Not only is the team captain ready to lead by example, she's hungry to win and knows what it will take not just from herself, but from her teammates. That can make Sheley's job a whole lot simpler.

"We haven't lost at home in seven years -63 games - and we've gone to NWAACCin each of the past seven years ... We've got a lot of good players who want to keep with the winning ways," Montes said. "This will probably be a lot of ours last chance to win a championship, so weall want to take advantage of that." One of Montes's jobs will be helping the coaching staff get the most out of the team's nine freshman. In addition to the three sophomores, freshman guards Kim Wilson, Carmen Williams, Kourtney Parks, Richan Modderman, Nicolle Bernhardt and Sarah Brolsma Whitfield and forwards Lynette Minthorn, Shimea Jordan and Theresa Brown round out the Titans roster. Even though five of the Titans players from last year's squad have moved onto four-year schools, Sheley described some of the perks running this program brings, in terms of recruiting. "At a four-year school you only need to recruit a couple players a year. At this level we may need to recruit six, seven, even eight players a year. Which is where having such a good program, having the university here and having the city of Eugene being such a destination makes bringing in players a lot easier." Sheley summed up what can be expected out of the 2008-09 Titans: "We'll try hard, and be fun to watch, and if at the end of the season we're one of the four orfive best teams, we'll have a chance. So that's where I'd like to be, and that's where our players are wanting to get to." Article Written By: Tyler Pell Sports Editor – The Torch

FEC- Lane’s athletic facilities set the standard for excellence in the NWAACC. LCC’s most impressive jewel is the Fitness Education Center, or FEC, which provides state-of-the-art exercise equipment, circuit training, and an indoor carpet track. The FEC helps the college with recruiting, personal performance, and preparation in every sport. Every term over 1,000 students, athletes, staff members, and community members use the facility. The facility was built in 1993 and is over 8,000 square feet. The driving force behind the completion of the FEC was Lane’s ongoing commitment to its students and student-athletes. A professionally trained and dedicated staff is always available for personal guidance. TRAINER- An onsite athletic trainer is available during all athletic practices and sporting events. The treatment room features all the latest in injury prevention and treatment equipment and supplies. T.E.R.P.- Lane is also equipped with a Therapeutic Exercise and Rehabilitation Program. The professional staff in the T.E.R.P. Center assists with the assigning of rehabilitation programs for those student-athletes that have lingering injuries or for those that suffer more severe injuries. TITAN COURT- The main gymnasium is known as “Titan Court” and can hold up to 2,000 spectators. Titan Court was just refurbished in the summer of 2002 with a complete strip down of the old varnish and a fresh application of paint and finish. The gym features 14 baskets and a center curtain that can be closed to run multiple games simultaneously. With fully automated lighting, sound equipment, scoreboard, and bleacher system, Lane’s gym can accommodate almost any type of event. OTHER- Athletic facilities at Lane include a weight room, four tennis courts, two soccer fields, a baseball, and a softball field (complete with indoor and outdoor batting cages and pitching machines), a full-size track, and over 15 miles of cross-country trails that traverse across campus.
