98Out with the old, in with the new

The space formerly occupied by New Haven Pizzais now home to a new Italian restaurant, Antonios. And Kenny Rogers really did know when to

foldem: Kenny left town (or at least the Village)and took his flashy neon signs with him. Coming

soon in his place is Xando, a European-style cafserving food, coffee, pastry, pannini, and liquor. We also must note the opening of the 99-Cent shop

where CharactersA Village Tavern used to be.The shop is highly recommended for aluminum foil,cold-cuts, and off-beat brand name tote-bags.

While the bargains are obvious, perhaps the owners

    might consider less obvious signage.

    Trees trimmed

In response to our request, the Department of For-estry trimmed our trees on Dec. 15.

    Presidents Message

    BY GARY TOMEI

Since we formed ourBlock Association in fall1996, we have won

several substantialvictories. However, as welook forward to 1998,

there are a number oftasks ahead of us.

    Change in parking rules stalled

Earlier this year the Association voted to requestthat the City return our parking to Alternate-Side-

of-the-Street rules. We secured the approval for thechange from Community Board 2 and thereafter

from the Department of Transportation (DOT).However, because of a bureaucratic snafu, thischange has not yet been put into effect.

    Illegal trucks keep rolling through

Last year we secured two signs from DOT at 6thAvenue, which clearly state that through bus traffic

is illegal on our block. However, trucks continue touse it as a thoroughfare. At our last general meet-ing, two police officers from Midtown Enforce-

ment, the division in charge of this problem, spokewith us and promised to assist our block.

Despite these assurances, this problem persists

to plague us, causing increased noise and fuel pollu-tion and harm to the foundational integrity of the

    many brownstones on the block.

Although all the officers of the Associationhave been tackling these traffic-related problems byfollowing up with both DOT and NYPD, we need

another person to join our ranks and pitch in. Pleasecontact Alan Jacobs at 824-5823 (daytime) shouldyou be available to help out.

    And theres more . . .

We are attempting to obtain planters to provide

greenery for the eastern end of the block. We also want to replace the standard issue

lampposts with the shepherd's crook style.

Since both items are expensive, we will beseeking funding for these items.

    Angels in our midst

A look at our neighbor Sal Conti does not conjureup images of cherubs or seraphim but rugged-

looking, handsome Sal is no less an angel. On November 5, 1997, when one of the young

women at Katherine House became distraught, di-

rector Andrea Doolan rushed her over for an emer-gency visit to Sal, who is a therapist with an officeat 149 W. 13th Street.

Sal not only cleared his office schedule tocounsel the young lady, he spent hours with her, andrefused a fee for his services. Ms. Doolan reports

that the young lady responded immediately to Sal'sministrations and is actually smiling for the first

time in weeks.Sal has my vote for Good Neighbor of the

    Year.GT
