LIVING YOUR BAPTISM Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. We are all familiar with the story. John is baptizing in the Jordan River. Jesus comes to be baptized. We know Jesus was without sin, why this action? The baptisms that John performs prefigure our Catholic Baptism. John baptizes for repentance from sin. Jesus unites himself with all sinners even though he is sinless. In Matthew’s Gospel, John the Baptist distinguishes his practice of baptism from the Baptism that the Messiah brings: “I am baptizing you with water…He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11) John’s statement brings to mind one of the things I find most beautiful about our Catholic faith: sacramental world view. In his book, Living the Sacraments, Joe Paprocki describes the sacraments as ‘thin moments’: those times “when we are metaphorically standing at the intersection of heaven and earth - not a physical location but a reality in which God’s presence oozes forth.” God, who is always with us, speaks and acts directly in and through the sacramental rites. God’s presence is experienced in a heightened way in both the ritual and in the divine residue that lingers after the celebration (like the smell of Chrism that lingers after Baptism or Confirmation). Our quest is not just to receive the sacraments but to live the sacraments. The sacraments represent a way of life for us. As Joe states, “To be a Catholic is to permanently plant oneself at the intersection of heaven and earth – a vantage point that enables us to see humanity and divinity as inseparably and eternally intertwined.” Today is a day to celebrate and consider your Baptism. Baptism provides us access to God. That access has been revealed to us in the Person of Jesus Christ who tells us clearly, “I am the Way the Truth and the Life.” (John 14:6) We can gain access to God’s grace by choosing to live not in our own name but in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. How appropriate that the Baptism of the Lord ushers in Ordinary time, a time for us to work on living our Baptism every day. When you encounter water during ordinary time, recall the ‘thin moment of your Baptism and recommit to loving and serving God and others by sharing in Jesus’ ministry: live your Baptism! • SURPRISED SLONEKERS…AND WORLD This Christmas brought some delightful surprises! Since the Christmas season ends today, let me tell you about them before it’s too late! The surprises for the Slonekers started Christmas Day. Of my three siblings, I feel blessed that my oldest siblings, Sharon and Tim, live in Hamilton, the same city in which we were born. Mom is a lifelong Hamiltonian too! However, my younger brother, Mike, the most adventurous of the four of us, lives in Baton Rouge, from whence his wife harkens. Adventurous, he was climbing ladders and walking on our house roof at too young an age, and he volunteered in Africa with the Peace Corp after college. He and his family visit every couple of years. It was a Christmas surprise that they came home for Christmas! Usually his visits are coordinated by mom, at least as much as a person can coordinate my younger brother. Her joyful expectation is high for months before the visit! However, she also starts worrying months in advance, setting out the airbeds and linens weeks before the Louisiana Slonekers arrival. Our first Christmas surprise was on Mom, and what a surprise it was! Unbeknownst to her, Mike, Rhonda, Jonathan and Benjamin left Louisiana on Christmas Eve morning for the fifteen hour trip, arriving at the rectory on Christmas Day at 10 AM, where mom and my sister’s family were waiting to attend the 10:30 Mass. It was a beautiful Christmas blessing to see her surprise and joy, especially at seeing her late-teenage grandchildren! Our second Christmas surprise happened two days later. One might think that once the surprise was over, mom might return to her organizing self, making plans for the days of the visit. That was not the case! Mom dealt surprisingly well with the new sense of powerlessness that this visit offered. Wonderfully, since my brother stayed at a motel, thanks to a gift of Marriott points from my brother-in-law’s business travel, mom was able to step back and give over much control. She also didn’t have the four of them underfoot everywhere in her small condo. That enabled us to set up the second surprise. We let her think she was in control of the Friday plans, which were to end in a gathering at a

restaurant of her choosing. While I got her out of the house early by going to a brew house for a beer with my brother across from the Marriott, my sis and her family accessed mom’s place and started decorating. Food and birthday cake were brought in. When I pretended to realize that I had forgotten my phone back at her condo, which is most true to form, mom was almost fuming when I hit the garage door opener at her condo to reveal the family gathered with noisemakers and hats to celebrate, a week early, her surprise eighty-sixth birthday party. Until this Christmas, I would have guessed it was nearly impossible to really surprise a mother. In that sense, all the Slonekers were surprised…a small sign of the incredible surprise of Christmas itself, where a world and its people are surprised with joy by a God who loved the world so much to send his only begotten Son for our salvation! As Christmas ends, I like the season so much I’m beginning to prepare for next Christmas! In talking with Pastoral Associate, Stacy Stang, who coordinates art and environment in church, I asked her what she thought about the possibility of constructing a stable for the crèche figures in church. She responded favorably. Therefore, if there is a woodworker who might be called to such a challenge, please see or call Stacy or me and we’ll talk about the possibility. Pray that the Lord sends someone to make this simple and yet profound improvement to our Christmas celebration! Finally, it is the time of year to remember the respect life issue of abortion as the anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision draws near. Please see the bulletin announcement from Jenny Belokonny regarding a wonderful respect life opportunity: Bottles for Babies. This yearly program helps Elizabeth’s New Life Center in their awesome ministry to help parents carry what might otherwise be fearful pregnancies to life outside the womb. Sincerely and with Love in Christ, Fr. Pat

THE DIGNITY OF WORK AND THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS: The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative. There are many ways to help by using your time, talent and/or treasure - both within our parish and outside of it - several of which are listed in today’s bulletin and in the parish app.
