Sheila |ordan andSteve Kuhn Duo
Hailed by many as the queen ofbebop, innovative singer SheilaJordan exemplifies the vocalexpression of jazz in all its forms.Drawing her most prominentinfluence from her friend and"btgbrother" Charlie Parkeq, her voicewends through melody like thewind instrument it fundamentallyis, leaping intervals, sliding aboutscales and manipulating d;mamics
like a master saxophonist. Yet her treatment of lyrics is alwaysdeep and graceful, and whether she's singing the words ofothers or improvising her own-such as to the melodies ofBird, as only she can-her vocal strokes become the finishingtouch of a musical masterpiece. The VJC applauds SheilaJordan for her 2011 NEAJazzMaster Award.
Assisting in the artistic effort is Jordan's longtime collaboratorand legendary jazzpianist Steve Kuhn. The onetime sidemanwith John Coltrane's quartet has for decades led pioneeringjazz ensembles with such luminaries as Steve Swallow, RonCarter, Jack DeJohnette and, since the 7970s, Sheila Jordan, among many others.
