DECEMBER SEASON FLASHBACK

Smt. Aruna Sairam, the magnetic crowd puller of the season, performed to a jam packed audience at the Music Academy. Rasikas who wanted to buy daily tickets thronged the gates of the Academy from 5 0’clockin the morning and the long queue was seen winding with many twists and turns ..Congratulations to the organizers for making the wait comfortable with seating arrangements, bajan music (during the long wait) and a cup of steaming hot filter coffee, in between ! Hats off to the scouts and volunteers who did a wonderful job in handling the crowd (consisting mostly of senior citizens )with respect and issuing tokens and tickets in an organized way !Needless to say, Aruna’s Kutcheri was out of the world and top class.

No wonder she received a standing ovation and loud cheering, which she richly deserved, from her loyal rasikas !

Yet another musical magnet, Smt Sudha Ragunathan, performed at the Music Academy to a full house .. Getting tickets for her show was like trying to attend a cricket match where Tandulkar was going to play!!

Being Vaikunta Ekadesi Day, she had selected quite a few krithis on Sriman Narayana. It was almost the fag end of the season and one could see the strain in her silken voice. In future we feel that Academy should book Sudha for the first week of the season. In spite of this, she delighted the audience with her special numbers and was almost mobbed by her rasikas after the show…with many children waiting in line to get her autograph…!!

Ranjani and Gayathri It was indeed a scintillating music performance by Ranjani and Gayathri at the Kamaraj Memorial hall. Starting brightly with a traditional varnam in Sahana, the honey-voiced sisters had the crowd in a receptive mood. Saveri raga alapana climaxing with the lovely “Durusuga.. was elevating. Rasikas like me who waited for their viruthams ,were not disappointed ; as the duo sang Katra kalviyum…. which was strung as a garland of ragamalikas. It was followed by the soul-stirring rendering of Nambikkettavar evaraiyaa…? in Hindolam by Papanasam Sivan on the city’s favourite deity, Sri Kapaleeshwarar in the ancient temple at Thiru Mylai ! Then came another Ragamalika in Subramania Bharathi’s Pahaivanukkarulvai…, may be the right choice for today’s world. They concluded their kutchery with a popular abhang of Santh Namdev in the raga Maand. And even after returning, their bhathi laden music was ringing in my ears.

Is it possible for Indian women especially the dancers to come to size “0” effortlessly and remain there for years…? This was the million dollar question that treads our mind when we saw Urmila Sathyanarayanan in her dance performance at Bharath Kalachar. Not only does this lady remain slim and trim for years but looks younger every year ….amazing but true.

The beauty of this young dancer, sometimes distracts me from concentrating on the grace and bhava displayed in her dance...so ravishing she is. Charmingly dressed in a gorgeous white, black and red combo, she danced her way into the heart of every rasika that evening .The topic chosen was Ramaanubhava and the lyrics were from none other than Poet Arunachala Kavi’s Rama Natakam and the dancer was the petite Urmila. The rasikas were immersed in soulful rasaanubhava. Special mention has to be made of her Guha episode and her role as Anjaneya .

Any concert of O. S. Arun is bound to be one of its kind, which will be lively, bhava l a d e n , i n n o v a t i v e , t r e n d y y e t traditional…His kutchery at Bharat Kalachar was no exception to this rule. From start to finish, he kept the audience in full cheer and happiness with his imaginative raagaanubhava and swaraanubhava ! His clear diction, whatever be the language of the composition adds more magic to his presentation.

The master piece of the evening was a listener’s choice…the evergreen and never boring. Vishamakkara Kannan….. It was remarkable to hear the minutest twists and twirls of the swaras from his resonant voice, go up in ecstasy and glide down with ease, like the sparkles from Diwali flowerpot!

I am diabetic for the past two years and have been taking medicines regularly. I do blood tests once in a month and the blood sugar is always under control. My problem is that I feel palpitation and tremors whenever my lunch is delayed. How can I avoid this problem?

I congratulate you for keeping your blood sugar under control. This type of palpitation and tremors when the lunch is delayed occur particularly to those maintaining blood sugar under control. This is due to low sugar level during that particular time. To avoid that you should have some mid-morning snacks at around 11 am. Tea or coffee without sugar, butter milk, milk, vegetable soup, vegetable salad, vegetable sandwich, fruit salad, sugar free biscuits and wheat bread slices – any of these can be taken as mid-morning snacks around 11am. The diabetic medicines will work for 24 hours and bring down your blood sugar in 24 hrs. A diabetes patient has to take food at prescribed timings to avoid low sugar.

If you follow timely food with regular medication the complications can be avoided.

I wish to highlight a major problem faced by the residents of Chinmaya Nagar, Stage-2. After the recent road laying work by the Corporation, the drainage lid at the centre of the road gave way and the manhole became widely open, causing danger to pedestrians, school children, motorists and cyclists. Besides, the residents of adjoining house find it difficult to park or take out their vehicles.

We immediately lodged a written complaint on the Website of the Chennai Corporation, on two occasions; they forwarded the complaint for initiating action to Division 65 office. However, so far no action has been taken by them to repair and close the manhole in Aani street, Chinmaya Nagar, Stage-2. Recently, we learnt that Metro Water and Drainage Board is (CMWSSB) responsible to do rectify the problem. Though we have spoken to CMWSSB persons, no action has been taken to close the lid. Not only that, similar problems are there in some adjoining streets (Natesan Nagar area), and all the roads are in the same poor condition, creating a major risk to the residents as well as road users.
