HOW’S ABOUT OUR TEAMWORK?
1+1<1?
1+1>2?
The Tortoise And The Hare Story
Once upon a time…
I’m the fastest runner.
That’s wrong.
I’m faster than you
The hare ran ahead very quickly then seeing that he was far ahead of the tortoise.
Poor guy! Even if I
take a nap, he could
not catch up with me.
He sat under the tree for relax before continuing the race but …soon fell asleep.
The tortoise moved slowly then surpassed the hare and finally finished the race, emerging as the new champion.
When the hare woke up, he realized that he'd lost the race.
The moral of the story?
Slow and steady wins the race This is classic story that we've all grown up with.

New Version of Hare and Tortoise Story
10/06/2014 10
Disappointed, the hare did some 5 Why analysis to find out the root cause: overconfidence and careless.
Why did I lose the
race?
Can we have
another race?
Ok.
There's no way the tortoise could have beaten him if he didn’t look down rival. So he challenged the tortoise to another race.
In this 2nd race, the hare tried his best to run as fast as possible, without stopping from start to finish. He won by several miles.
The moral of the story? Fast and consistent will always beat the slow and steady. It's good to be slow and steady; but it's GREAT to be fast and reliable.
But the story doesn't end here …
The tortoise did some strategic
brainstorming, and realized that
there's no way he can beat the
hare in a race with the current
format.
How to win him?
He thought for a while
then challenged the
hare to another race.
The hare agreed.
3rd race: the hare took off and ran at highest speed until he came to a river bank. The hare sat there wondering what to do while the destination was on the opposite river side.
What should I
do?
In the meantime the tortoise trundled along, got into the river, swam to the opposite bank, continued walking and finished the race.
The story still hasn't ended …
The hare and the tortoise, by this time, had become closed friends and they did some strategic thinking together. Both realized that the next race could have been run much better.
So they decided to do the last race again, but to run as a team this time.
Hi, buddy. How
about doing our last
race again?
In the 4th race: they started off. They both felt a greater satisfaction sense than they'd felt earlier.
Firstly the hare carried the tortoise till the riverbank
There, the tortoise took over and swam across with the hare on his back
Then, the hare again carried the tortoise and they reached the finishing line together
1st race: it's good to be slow and steady
2nd race: it's great to be fast and reliable
3rd race: in life, when you face with failure
- Work harder and put in more effort
- Change strategy and try something different
- Work to your competencies
All 3 races: never give up when faced with failure
4th race: compete against the situation, not against a rival
Teamwork is mainly about situational leadership: pool
resources & work as a team always beat individual performers
Key takeaways from the story
In the 1980s, Roberto Goizueta took over Coke CEO role
and faced with big challenge from Pepsi miracle growth.
His duty was to increase market share 0.1 percent a time.
Roberto decided to stop competing against Pepsi and
instead compete against the situation of percent growth.
Story
Roberto asked his executives what was Coke's share of the
average drink intake of an American per day? The answer
was only 2 vs. 14 ounces (14.3%)
He said Coke needed a larger market share. The competition
wasn't Pepsi but the remaining 12 ounces of water, tea,
coffee, milk, and fruit juices. People should reach for a Coke
whenever they felt like drinking something.
What does Coke learn from the hare
and tortoise story?
Change strategy and try something different:
work on their competencies and compete
against the market situation, not against
directly Pepsi as a traditional rival.
Bring Coke closer to consumers by installing
vending machines at every street corner. Sales
took a significant jump and Pepsi has never
quite caught up since.

BOAT ROWING STORY & THE POWER OF TEAMWORK
In the sport of row-boat racing, the boat is rowed by eight athletes.
10/06/2014 23
Four on the left side
Four on the right side
If one of them feels that he is stronger than the other teammates, then he tries to show his strength by rowing twice as hard

Hint: The teamwork spirit to support force balance across all
team members is key success factor:
Equal force distributed by everyone
Rowing evenly at the same speed.
After telling the story to production workers, Taiichi Ohno
(1978) concluded: “Teamwork is everything”.

It reduce the air resistance on the other birds. When the lead bird gets tired, he falls back in the line and another bird takes over the lead.
This way they can fly much farther.
Why Do Geese Fly in a V Formation?
Teamwork - a lesson from
the Honeybee
Wonderful team with very clear task assignment:
Queen bee lays around 2,000 eggs/ day
Nurses take care of eggs and larva.
Mortuary bees dispose of the dead and see that the hive is
sterile.
Soldier bees protect the hive from enemy.
Hunter bees seek out and collect food for the entire family
(over 100,000 mouths to feed).

Ants are Global ‘Model Citizens'
• Ants have been recognized as tireless workers and selfless model citizens.
• A research has found that some ants (and bees) can even sacrifice their lives for the greater benefits of their community

Teamwork is … the ability to actively work together to accomplish common goals. It is the fuel that allows
common people to attain uncommon results.
Share information and responsibility Engage and look for opportunities to improve the team Talents are acknowledged and utilized Be aligned to common goals Learn together: when mistakes are made, the focus is on problem solving, not claim teammates.
Good teamwork does not happen by accident. It requires patience, leadership, support, and opportunities to practice & learn.
