The vertical pick-up
machines VL 3 (chuck dia
160 mm) and VL 5 (chuck
dia 250 mm) are com-
plemented by the VSC 7
(chuck dia 400 mm) for
large, heavy workpieces
of max 340 mm diameter.
The outstanding charac-
teristic of the VSC 7 from
EMAG is the successful
combination of sophis-
ticated technology and
highest quality on the one
hand and the low capital
outlay and minimal foot-
print – and the resulting
optimal economics – on
the other.

VSC 7 – the production machine. The
VSC 7 is equipped with recirculating
workpiece storage conveyor. This
ensures that the machine, helped by the
pick-up spindle, loads and unloads itself.
Regardless of whether the machine
operator is taking a break or it is time for
a change of shifts, the VSC 7 keeps on
producing. And when it comes to foot-
print, the VSC 7‘s vertical design scores
a few more points.

Workpiece quality comes as standard with the VSC.
The vertical turning center VSC 7
corresponds in construction and
constituent components to the tried and
tested vertical turning centers of the
VSC series from EMAG. For instance, it
too features the machine base in the
MINERALIT® polymer granite that
distinguishes itself by its outstanding
vibration damping properties. The results
are extended tool life and excellent
surface fi nish. The machine base carries
the overhead slide with the vertical main
spindle. This creates symmetrical force
distribution and results in a high degree
of rigidity. Spindle motor, main spindle
and quill, turret, electrical cabinet and
machine base are all fl uid-cooled. A twin-
circuit cooling system ensures that the
machine temperature is maintained
within strict limits of the ambient
temperature. This completely eliminates
any inaccuracies caused by temperature
fl uctuations. Rigid, low-vibration milling
and drilling are also aided by the
hydrostatic guideway of the quill in
Z-axis, the 160 mm diameter of the front
bearing of the main spindle and the
sturdy tool receptors in the turret.

Complete-machining – even when chip volumes are large.
Whether the workpiece has to be
turned, drilled or milled, the VSC 7
adjusts itself with great flexibility to the
task in hand. The turret with its VDI 50
receptors accommodates 12 turning or
up to 12 live drilling and milling tools.
The chuck, with a diameter of 400 mm,
accepts workpieces of up to 340 mm
diameter and 160 mm height. The user
has at his disposal a machine with a
power rating of 58 kW and a main
spindle with a torque rating of max
930 Nm and speeds of up to 3600 rpm.
This guarantees optimal results, even
where the chip volume is large.
The pick-up spindle returns the finish-ma-chined component to the carrier prism.
98
On its way from machining to unloading
position the workpiece passes a
measuring probe. This is located outside
the machining area, to ensure that the
measuring results are not adversely
affected by the presence of chips or dirt
particles. The measurements are taken
with the component in its original set-up.
For visual inspection and for cleaning,
maintenance or service work there is full
access to all supply systems (hydraulics,
coolant, cutting fluid, central lubrication)
from the side.

The proper solution for automation too.
The recirculating, prism-type loading
frames – the carrier prisms – that take
the components to and from the pick-up
station are of simple design and require
no resetting. They allow for a multitude
of workpieces of different size, shape
and diameter to be handled with great
ease. An extensive range of compo-
nents can thus be machined with the
same carrier prisms and without the
need for resetting.
A release system on the gimballed
pick-up station prevents damage to the
machine. When a workpiece that has
been positioned incorrectly in its carrier
prism arrives at the pick-up station, the
machine‘s emergency stop is activated
and the pick-up station tipped out of
harm‘s way. As soon as the workpiece is
removed, the pick-up station rights itself
again.
