LADY WITH THE LAMP "When I am no longer even a memory, just a name, I hope my voice may perpetuate the great work of my life……. Florence Nightingale."

T he 3rd of September 2013 marked the launch of white uniforms for the

Nursing and white coats for Medical and Allied teams of Vryheid Hospital. This followed on the KZN Health Profes-sionals summit which was held at the Dur-ban Christian Centre on the 9th May 2013. The theme of the summit was “My Profes-sion, My Pride: Reviving values, ethics and ethos of Health Care Professions. Staff and clients were very excited about the change and felt that white uniforms and coats bring dignity back to the Nurs-ing and Medical professions.

Once more the theme for the day was “my profession, my pride, my pride my profes-sion. The Staff from all components were singing and excited with “My Profession My Pride”, they revived ethos and values at-tached to their professions. A short service was graced by the presence of Pastor S.S. Rakometsi who blessed all with a scripture from Genesis: Chapter 1 verse 1” In the beginning God created the heaven and earth”. He emphasized the im-portance of exhibiting professionalism in all we do and also performing our duties with compassion and respect for our patients. Many of the participants stated that this launch actually rekindled their pride and that they would become beacons of the change that should be taking place.

Most people work their whole lives with-out getting as much as a thank you for the good works that they dedicate their lives for. In conjunction with Quality day cele-bration, Vryheid Hospital staff got recog-nized for the hard work and years of serv-ing the Department tirelessly.

20 September 2013 was a day of jubila-tion as most staff dressed in different tra-ditional attires celebrated their Heritage and diversity of cultures in South Africa. In an event that was held at the Hospital playground and was graced by the Board Members, Clinic Committees Chairper-sons and guests from the District Office staff were awarded certificates and tro-phies for long services i.e. 20 years – 40

years of service; as well as for best prac-tices.

The guest speaker Ms T.B.T. Sakyi Depu-ty District Manager emphasized the im-portance of a health worker, stating that the lives of the community begin and end in their hands so they ought to continue with the good work that they do. She also congratulated Vryheid Hospital and it’s clinics for getting the most best practices certificates in Zululand District at the Quality Day Celebration that was held at the District Office in Ulundi. 28 September the world rabies day patients in waiting area were given in-service education as an awareness on the prevention, treatment of rabies.

Rabies is a pre-ventable viral disease of mammals most of-ten transmitted to humans from another spe-cies (such as dogs), commonly by a bite from an infected animal.

The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. The early symptoms of ra-

bies in people are similar to that of many other illnesses, including fever, head-ache, and general weakness or discomfort. As the disease progresses, more specif-ic symptoms appear and may include insomnia, anxiety, confusion, slight or par-tial paralysis, excitation, hallucinations, agitation, hypersalivation (increase in sa-liva), difficulty swallowing, and hydrophobia (fear of water). Death usually occurs within days of the onset of these symptoms. Prevention of rabies. Vaccinating dogs, cats, rabbits, and ferrets against rabies Keeping pets under supervision Not handling wild animals or strays Contacting an animal control officer upon observing a wild animal or a stray,

especially if the animal is acting strangely If bitten by an animal, washing the wound with soap and water for 10 to 15

minutes and contacting a healthcare provider to determine if post-exposure prophylaxis is required.

For more information contact your nearest health care center of state veteri-narian.

LAUNCHING OF TB SUPPORT GROUPS

The Hospital  TB Team led by  Mrs N. H. Mhlongo as  well guests from Murchison, Thulasizwe Hospital and visitors from John Hopkins

University in USA.

A n ideal place in the world would be a place where people around understood what you were going through even be-

fore you can mention it. In a community like that anyone feels they can handle anything as they would be surrounded by understanding and car-ing people. The purpose of having TB support groups is to create an ideal place like that. A community of family members and friends dedi-cated to dealing with Tuberculosis, together. On the 28th of June 2013 Vryheid Hospital launched 4 TB Supports groups namely Siyanqoba, Othandweni, Sinethemba and Siyaqina. Amongst the things that were celebrated on the day was the fact that Vryheid was rendering sus-ceptible TB management, MDR TB diagnoses and nurse initiated management of MDR –TB which is offered by Ms N. H. Mhlongo who is the second South African nurse to initiate, treat and manage MDR—TB. Currently together with her team she is looking after 123 MDR—TB pa-tients and 3 XDR—TB patients.

All the speakers at the launch were emphasizing that TB is curable and together, loving each other TB can be conquered. The doctors and nurses pledged their support in ensuring that TB pa-tients adhere to their treatment to reduce default-er rate. Pharmacy was there too to emphasize the importance of taking treatment as prescribed. TB patients were reminded of the importance of living a Healthy Lifestyle. They were given ide-as on how to sustain themselves as the support group by creating things to do i.e. craftwork, vegetable gardens etc. Ms F. S. Mtshali also en-couraged them to have gardens at home. The hospital TB team led by Ms N. H. Mhlongo with the support of Dr Neibhur from Siloah Hos-pital was commended for reviving the support groups at Vryheid Hospital. The event was graced by the presence of distinguished guests from John Hopkin University in USA, Murchi-son and Thulasizwe Hospitals.

MMC TEAM CONTINUES TO SHINE

The team behind the success of MMC led by Mrs S. E. Mlambo (in the middle).  With her is Vryheid Hospital and Clinics doctors, nurses,  programme managers, lay counselors, community care givers as well as staff from Match.

Influx of clients from Abaqulusi waiting for the service.

Numbers for MMC continue to

escalate as more and more young men from Abaqulusi and surround-ing areas flock to do circumcision. Over 200 men are circumcised each and every camp. To meet the grow-ing demand for the circumcision a plan has been drawn to ensure that MMC mini camps are not limited to school days only, but conducted al-most every month. The plan seeks to take the mini camps to the 15 nearby clinics of Abaqulusi, thus en-suring that no place is left unat-tended to. Since the beginning of 2013/2014 financial year, about 1600 clients have been circumcised. The enthu-siasm is really astounding especially in Mondlo area. The hospital management really ap-preciate the contribution of DramAid with the mobilization and Match and Dr Quazi’s team from MMC Centre of Excellence who as-sist with the circumcision.

This year Pharmacy Week ran from 1 to 8 September 2013. The overall theme, Towards Quality Care Together Under-standing Generic Medicine, was rein-forced with the concerted sub-theme fo-cus that every patient should understand generic medicines. The Vryheid Pharmacy team together with the school health team embarked on a journey to educate the community and the schools around Abaqulusi about ge-neric medicine. From the 03—06 September 2013 pa-tients from the OPD, CDC, Mondlo II clinic were alerted on basic health edu-cation with regards to Healthy eating habits to people on chronic medication i.e. diabetes and hypertension. Other areas that were covered were the importance of exercising as means to overcome other exacerbating factors.

Neighboring high schools Mpofini and Filidi were also visited as an awareness about Pharmacy as a career. In-depth in-formation on which subjects to choose at High school as well as at entry re-quirements at the university was shares with the scholars. The hospital medical and allied team was not left behind. Pharmacist Intern Mr Siyabonga Mbatha gave a presenta-tion on the generic medication and how it is used. The team consisted of P. M. Buthelezi, Pharmacist, S. Mbatha Pharmacist In-tern, T. Zwane Pharmacy Assistant, J. K. Hlatshwayo Drug Coordinator and N. Khambule Pharmacy Manager.
