Executive Summary

This is D7.1 “Kick-off meeting in Barcelona” of the FP7 project VR-HYPERSPACE (AAT-285681). It

summarizes the events which took place during the meeting, the results that were achieved and fi-

nally the actions that were decided for the next six months. This work was carried out as part of WP7

Project Management, of which the main objectives are the implementation of the administrative,

scientific, technical and ethical issues related to the project. The meeting took place on the 8th

and

9th

of November at the eventLab, University of Barcelona. All WP leaders presented their plans for

the next six months and four workshops introduced the participants to relevant concepts and state

of the art research and technology for the project. There was a productive exchange of ideas and

the results at each phase of the project will be posted on the project website (http://www.vr-

hyperspace.eu/).

A special thanks also to Raphael Carbonell and Irene Sanjuan Navais and other team members at the

University of Barcelona for all their support in hosting the kick-off meeting.

4. Summary of Main Achievements

The kick-off meeting in Barcelona consisted of two full days of presentations and workshops which

aimed to:

• learn more about each partner

• set the context of VR-HYPERSPACE

• discuss the scope of the project – Passenger 2050 and beyond, technological concepts, and

industrial scenarios

• synchronise the next 6 months of planning for all the workpackages

• gather the information required for D7.1 Kick-Off Meeting, Barcelona

• achieve milestone M0 Project Kick-Off

4.1. The Consortium

Each partner had ten minutes to present a description of their organisation, introduce the people

working on the project and present their roles and responsibilities. Brief descriptions of the partners

can be found on the project website (http://www.vr-hyperspace.eu/). Throughout the two days it

was clear to see that the consortium was an exciting mix of scientists and industrial partners who

hope to bring a new, fresh approach to the challenge of future air travel (see Figure 2 and Figure 3).

Figure 2: In the meetings room (1) Figure 3: In the meetings room (2)

4.2. Context and scope of the project

VR-HYPERSPACE as described in the description of work (DoW) aims to carry out “fundamental re-

search and development leading to a paradigm shift in relation to passenger comfort”. Our goal is to

Page 11: VR-HYPERSPACE D7.1 Kick-Off Meeting, Barcelona final · D7.1 Kick Off Meeting, Barcelona VR HYPERSPACE FP7-AAT-2011-RTD-1-285681 Page 7 1. Introduction This is deliverable D7.1 Kick-off

consider the future interior space of aircraft and its impact on the comfort of Passenger 2050 and

beyond. The approach involves creating “positive illusions” with virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality

(MR) technologies, drawing from the latest work in neuroscience and the psychology of perception.

We will be exploring whether we can increase a passenger’s comfort level and reduce discomfort if

they see a virtual representation of themselves looking happy and well, in a virtually large space or in

a more comfortable virtual environment with other people. Importance will be placed on ensuring

that the discomfort of the passenger will also be monitored. It is not our intention to enable future

passengers to endure higher levels of discomfort but rather to enhance the passenger experience

and their ability to cope with further distances of travel.

The wide-ranging possibilities for Passenger 2050 and beyond, the different types of industrial sce-

narios, as well as the potential technological solutions to support these, needed to be discussed in

order to agree on the scope of the project. To begin these discussions, four workshops were held

and the technologies and applications at the University of Barcelona (UB) were demonstrated (see

Figure 4).

Figure 4: Demonstrations at the University of Barcelona

The first workshop explored “Passenger 2050 and beyond”. In small groups (see Figure 5), the part-

ners had to select and define two types of passenger from a number of presented options (e.g. a

business man, elderly couple, young lady, and so on) and consider a variety of mood states these

passengers might be experiencing when flying (e.g. happy, excited, anxious, and so on). In addition,

the groups had to consider how these passengers carry out activities now and how they may poten-

tially like to carry out these activities in the future. The purpose of this workshop was to understand

the differences between passengers and how individual characteristics may have an impact on com-

fort, discomfort and activities being carried out. These scenarios and others will be described in D1.1

Report of current scenarios and case definitions due in M6 (March, 2012) of the project.

The second workshop discussed “Technological concepts”. A number of partners presented innova-

tive ideas with VR and MR technologies including: dynamic lighting, multi-viewer, multi-user interac-

tive displays, body tracking and representation and 360 degrees of movement. This provided a bet-

ter understanding of the state of the art of these technologies and how these technologies could

support the goals of the project. This was followed by the third workshop which explored “Industrial

scenarios”. Visions of future travel and possible configurations of the interior cabin were presented

to provide some examples from an industrial viewpoint. Comfort in the cabin was noted as one of

the main goals. The results of all these discussions will be presented in D1.2 Report of future light,

display and new media technologies in interior spaces of airborne vehicles due in month 6 (March,

2012) of the project.

The final workshop examined “Dissemination”. Using the passenger descriptions generated in the

first workshop, the partners were divided into small groups and were tasked to produce a TV com-

mercial or advert which would appeal to those passengers. The aim of this workshop was to help us

to be creative in our thinking and imagine what the VR-HYPERSPACE “experience” would be like for

real people in the future.

4.3. Six month plan

The project work has been organised to achieve key milestones around every 6 months. Milestone 0

was to have the Project kick-off meeting in Barcelona, which was achieved. Milestone 1 is to com-

plete the “Current and Technical Scenarios Exploration Phase”. This includes:

• Defining current and future passenger scenarios of 2050 and beyond (WP1),

• Initiating the experimental setups to investigate human perceptual issues (WP2)

• Concurrently establish the technical requirements for these experiments (WP3)

• Establishing links with special interest groups and industry for the purpose of socio-

economic assessment (WP6).

Each workpackage (WP) leader described their WP and the planning for the next 6 months. Several

tasks are dependent on the outcomes of each other and therefore it was necessary to synchronise

the work. Several smaller on-line meetings were scheduled in the next two months to ensure col-

laboration and an update meeting is planned for January.

5. Conclusions

The Kick-off meeting in Barcelona on 8-9th

November, 2011, hosted by the University of Barcelona

successfully began the VR-HYPERSPACE project. The partners were able to present their interests

and viewpoints to all. There was a productive exchange of ideas within the creative workshops and

during the demonstrations at the eventLab. Results at each phase of the project will be posted on

the project website (http://www.vr-hyperspace.eu/).
