problems. They promote the use of credit through education and confidential budget guidance, money

management, housing and bankruptcy counseling.

Annual Festival Celebrates Our FarmsGet to know your

community by spending the day on five working farms during the 18th annual Calvert County Farm Festival Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17 and 18, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Purchase pumpkins and fall produce, enjoy a hay ride, a corn maze, sample wines and more. The

event, held rain or shine, promises to be a great family outing at these five local farms:

This farm is run entirely by volunteers with a mission to provide produce to local food banks and care for the health of the land. A one-acre farm, Double Oak also offers an educational garden that teaches historic farming practices and no-till, organic home gardening.

Smooth OperatorsThree members of the Calvert County Sheriff ’s Office were recently recognized for their ongoing efforts to stop aggressive driving. Fridays Creek is home to picturesque vineyards, a variety of delicious wines, elegant décor and local art displays. A rustic barn where tobacco once hung has been fully restored to house a tasting room and gallery, as well as wine storage, aging and production rooms. There is a fee for wine tasting.

This family farm specializes in humanely raised quality all-natural meats, extra-large field-grown mums, pumpkins and many fall items. Recent expansions include fall fun activities geared toward elementary-aged children including a sorghum maze, petting zoo, hay ride and a free small pumpkin. There is a $7 admission fee.

Perigeaux has four vineyards of eight acres on a former tobacco farm. Farm Festival activities include wine tastings/food pairings, live music, péntanque (lawn bowling) tournaments, arts and crafts, vineyard and winery tours and food vendors. There is a fee for wine tasting.

This 362-acre farm produces tobacco, corn and grain and focuses on agricultural education. Come enjoy a corn maze, hay ride, petting zoo, giant slide, moon bounce,

All proceeds from this fun run will benefit Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse programs. Free T-shirts go to the first 125 paid registrants and awards will be given to runners in all age categories. This fun run is in remembrance of Mike Blackwell, an avid runner killed while jogging on Broomes Island Road. Registration and check-in are at 8 a.m. and racing starts at 9 a.m. Cost is $25 in advance, $30 day of race, $20 for CAASA and Chesapeake Bay Running Club (CBRC) members and $15 for students 21 years and younger.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is a lasting tribute to US Marines past, present and future. Situated on a 135-acre site adjacent to the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, the museum’s soaring design evokes the image of the flag-raisers of Iwo Jima and beckons visitors to the 120,000-square-foot structure. World-class interactive exhibits using the most innovative technology surround visitors and immerse them in the sights and sounds of Marines in action. Tour on your own for an hour, break for a gourmet sandwich buffet lunch at the museum’s Devil Dog Diner, then tour for another hour. Please note: This trip requires a lot of walking. The $56 fee includes transportation, museum admission, pay on your own tour and lunch.
