3.4 Please share any comments/priorities/ideas.-Lights and computers are always left on in many departments -Carpool rules too tight for those who carpool with people who work in different buildings or who work for other employers -Recycle bins are always full of garbage and vice versa particularly in the HOL building -We are more efficient as a workforce if we are healthy, support healthy employees -Be willing to adjust start and finish times of shifts for those who take transit (within reason)identify support positions that can be performed off site / off hours - negotiate sensible management parameters to encourage staff to work off campus some or most days. And / or to work off hours to reduce congestion (network

traffic, parking, vehicle traffic) at busy times and to allow work/life flexibility for human beings.reiterate the "easy" fixes on the TRU intranet, such as 1.Switching Lights off 2.Think before printing 3. switching PC off at night 4. is this waste recyclableThe Brown Family House of Learning was built to the LEED Gold standard and yet my opinion as someone who works in that building it has many shortcomings. Better facilities for bikers. More flexibility for staff who take the bus to adjust their schedules. Departmental waste audits. I think we need to start with the "easy wins" like ensuring recycling on campus is running very well, especially around food services. In question 2.28, I have said I have no opinion. While a mainstay of our governance framework is the need for ethical conduct, I question how sustainability can be incorporated into the governance framework, as opposed to being a value to which the University is committed.educate international students on the quality of Kamloops drinking water...discourage them from buying cases of bottled water..and convert them to using reusable water bottles and travel mugs.Good luck!Keep up the good work! The slope below TRU is an ideal location for a wind farm. There's near-constant wind along the Thompson River valleys. It would not take very many windmills to make TRU 100% energy-self-contained.This is an amazing idea and collabortation. We have the knowledge and resources to make a differnece and bring possitive change! And change starts with knowledge. :)This aspect of a sustainale and green campus can distinguish TRU from other tradtional universities in BC.Open Education resourcesDetermine the feasibility of using solar parking surfaces at TRU.I don't think lectures, classes, and campaigns are the solution here. Though they are all effectives tools, I think the community will be inspired to make environmentally friendly choices if the school has led the way (for example, improved transportation options). Or DISPLAYING and monitoring food sources and waste management. We can feel proud of this together. And environmental action is instilled naturally, not 'preached'.

Need to e leaders in global settingSurvey like this should have an app for ir. TRU should design an app that allows stufents to share opinions with these topic Tuition rebates for those that bike or bus, Eliminate non reusable plastic beverage containers. Divest from fossil fuels in our investments. Minimize soft grass areas in favor of xeriscaped, natural Kamloops surfaces in order to reduce water consumption.I believe that we should bring more awareness to students about sustainability and create even bigger clubs/organizations on campus for students to join and give their input on current campus situation.-engaging students in local as well as global issues and how climate change affects the global community, economy, and environment -- especially as to how it relates to their field of study -- every profession will be affected by a changing environment so incorporating sustainability into all fields of study will be beneficial. -a community garden on campus -eliminating disposable coffee cups from on campus coffee shops -banning styrofoam Move towards sustainable buildings and practices all over campus Being revolutionary and working with the city to help both tru and the community! Plastic free campaign, use of green space for water retention, I.e gardens rather than grass! A lot of mini education projects, the new roots and shoots club might be able to collaborate.2.06 - in reference to this statement. I have been teaching for a few summers in Old Main. Every summer we have had to deal with construction inside our offices , hallways and classrooms. I do not believe that our health and safety has been protected entirely. There has been a lot of noise and especially water damage and dust in the air.I always wonder if we have been breathing in mold or asbestos. I certainly hope TRU has followed safety policies by tackling these issues if they exist.Food Production: I would like to see Community garden plots on campus for students and faculty/staff. Community orchards should be encouraged (plant edible fruit trees rather than ornamental trees. Staff offices should be offered simple, low-cost, practical ideas/methods for growing their own food, such as sprouting jars and small-scale aquaponic systems. This may sound more radical but I would also like to see TRU invest in community chicken coops and and colony-raised rabbits for ethically produced meat and egg production. This could be done in collaboration with Culinary Arts, Animal Health, and the sustainability office. Transportation: I would also like to see TRU invest in an electric car-share program for students as well as a bike share program. TRU should work with the city to plan and build more efficient bike and pedestrian paths to the Sahali commercial area (Superstore, Winners, Save-On Foods etc.). If people could jump on a bike and SAFELY ride to the bank on their lunch break I believe we could significantly reduce car

traffic and use at TRU.I think it is wonderful that TRU is composting! Tie closely to community - U Village, health & wellness, small city culture, Aboriginal knowledge, expertise of faculty in conservation, ecology, & culture, students as leaders in innovation & problem-solving.Thrilled with the composting of food!More locally sourced, organic food options would be great on campus, including foodstuffs from TRU gardens. As much as the "multiple containers" in the hallways have good intentions, I feel overwhelmed by them. There are so many variations on these as you walk down the halls and enter offices in Old Main that I'm unsure what goes where anymore. Our staffroom has a huge garbage bin and since it is convenient everything seems to go in there. Some reconconsidering as to placement of these containers is warranted. Perhaps an education campaign would also be usefule. Keep up the good work. I am sure that you will come up with a great plan!I am impressed by the new recycle bins in lots of locations - convenience is key.I believe spending a ton of money to appear green is a wastesustainability is more than an education it is a belief structure and a lifestyle.I believe the most obvious and least sustainable is the waste of electricity to heat and cool buildings with large vacant spaces and poorly designed HVAC systems. The ring road and environs is not sustainable in anyway. Not to people, animals or the environment. There needs to be more thought into running and walking paths for all. A planned route to Kenna too.Needs to involve Kamloops community as well. There needs to be a more aggressive strategy of welcoming residents of Kamloops to TRU to build a greater sense of integration with community and region.it is also important for the university to help place graduates from their programs into jobs, sustainability must include the results of Post-secondary educationAlthough a strategic plan tends to have a shelf-life of 5 years, the impact of our actions today have a much farther reach. I would hope the strategic sustainability plan has a longer vision. A question I would ask is "How do the goals of our short-term vision (5 year plan) support the long-term vision (50 year plan)?"

Page 42: Vovici EFM Report: Strategic Sustainability Plan … · Web viewStrategic Sustainability Plan Survey Monday, July 14, 2014 Powered by Vovici EFM Executive Summary This report contains

Solar power has to be the focus. You have wonderful south facing vistas and so many roofs to house the systems on! No excuse not to! I would rather the focus be put to solar systems than rain catchment, as we are in a semi-arid desert and the financial resources would be better used by focusing on harnessing solar power. The university should be more respected in this community and furthermore nationwide.tru needs more on-campus housing/residence. apartments for students past their 1st year would be good to give them more freedom. As the daughter of an Agriculturalist, I've grown up in a strong environment where sustainability, environmentalism and culture is important. I am also an Aboriginal student so when it comes to getting back to basic's, it's important as well. I want to see these types of lifestyles in our university. It would be helpful to develop a series of talks for the general public where the TRU sustainability goals are explained and people are encouraged/educated in how to make such changes for their own business/home/community. I believe sustainability is something that TRU needs to be a community leader in. Go for it. Show how Sustainability is good for the environment, good for our wallets, and good for our culture & society.design apps for cooperative transportationGives financial assistance in case of emergency to international students. Also provide them faciltiy to pay there fee in installments during the semester. Provide multi cultural activites in classes which helps to students to interact like a family not to be act just like class fellowsAll of these ideas are fantastic but what really makes the difference is the push to put them in action. It will involve everyone and must have a social stigma attached so everyone feels the need to contribute. Professors should give out exam packages that have less paper as most people only use 3 pages out of the 10I believe that you should look to elders of local First Nations Bands when you are looking at Sustainabiliy. First Nations have long used Sustainability example: taking only what's needed causing less harm to environmnet. Overlooking this important source of information would be detrimental to this Plan's success.Sustainability also means that for health and life. TRU mst have ventilation in offices and classrooms both in and after hours as people work there after hours too.It would be nice if the campus clean-up was held before the end of school. I know I would like to participate, am never in kamloops to do so...maybe 2campus clean-ups? Each mid semester ? Maybe more people would show up to help :)

Page 43: Vovici EFM Report: Strategic Sustainability Plan … · Web viewStrategic Sustainability Plan Survey Monday, July 14, 2014 Powered by Vovici EFM Executive Summary This report contains

or maybe a community clean-up w/ departments working together ? Thanks :)I have noticed that there have been more and more initiatives on campus. I really think that is great! I am looking forward to see more of these initiatives.if our toilets had non-potable water/semi filtered that would be a great way to lessen the amount of water used. --Branding TRU as sustainabledesignated smoking areas should be away from walkways that us non smokers have to use every day. what is the point of trying to make the air clean via low emission cars when I have to walk through a cloud of smoke in front of old main every day. This is only my opinion, but I think administration uses too much paper.Without respect and justice, sustainability as a goal in itself is futile. One must choose carefully the principles that are being sustained and the costs (especially in reference to human well being)of such goals.Reduce consumption and waste!I believe that all our campuses should be viewed as one big campus with the same goals and ideas in mind.Sustainability should encompass all aspects of life, include dietary, would like to see more vegan options instead of status quo.I believe the move toward blended learning should involve a less intense classroom experience on campus.Need to stop watering so much it stops absorbing and flows into the streets. Also, someone needs to go around WHILE watering is happening so that sprinklers are actually pointed where they should be. There's also no excuse to not have solar panels everywhere on campus. Kamloops gets a ton of sun, and TRU should be harnessing it better.Good work.Survey not cellphone friendly. Educate and pressure for greater social responsibility, in which people feel social pressures to do the right thing, be environmentally friendly, otherwise people are judging them. Empower the people to start living as though they don't have another planet to go to.
