For the first time, the M. Allan Vo-gelson Regional Branch of theVoorhees Library, located at 203 Lau-rel Road, is hosting the Big Play Dateevent. The event is set to take placeon March 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Its going to be amazing, EmilyMoore, head of Youth Services at thelibrary, said.

Moore listed two key goals of theBig Play Date. The first is to showpeople that a lot of fun can happen atthe library, even on a Saturday. Thesecond objective is for caretakersand parents to leave with a plethoraof inexpensive ideas and ways to en-courage fun and development, forchildren ages 1 to 3.

You dont have to have all the lat-est educational toys to encourage de-velopment in your child. I cant thinkof a better way to spend a morning,having meaningful fun with yourchild and connecting with your com-munity at the library, Moore said.

The library will have five stations

set up with activities that appeal tothe different senses, where childrenand caregivers can play. Activitiesplanned include smelling stations,color sorting and tactile experiences,such as texture balloons and pools ofshredded paper.

Moore mentioned being most ex-cited to debut the shredded paperstation, which will be like a swim-ming pool of paper for children to be,crunching and throwing and hav-

ing fun.Parents and other caregivers will

not only get to see children engagedin different activities using simple,inexpensive materials such as card-board boxes, cereal boxes, crackerboxes and paper rolls commonlyfound at home; there will also be edu-cational resources available for theadults in attendance.

The Childrens Hospital ofPhiladelphia is sending injury pre-vention specialist Tracey Hewitt tothe play date to discuss how to keepchildren active but safe during play-time.

Hewitt will be bringing a range ofcar seats, which will be used todemonstrate proper car safety.

Shes prepared to be as helpful aspossible, Moore said.

ShopRite Market of Lawnside issending registered dietician JessicaMolinaro to the play date. Molinarowill offer advice on healthy snackingand eating. ShopRite will providefree, healthy snacks for kids at theevent.

Sammie Jammies and other funsnacks.

Its a play date, but there aresome real lessons to learn, Mooresaid.

Moore and other staff memberswill be handing out informationcards to each adult guest. The infor-mation cards will act as detailedevent guides.

With the harsh weather andother factors preoccupying theminds of busy Voorhees residentsthis winter, it was easy to forgetthat the Animal Welfare Associa-tion has been working hard toplan a lot of fun events for spring.

The major upcoming event is

the Paws and Feet 5K Race andDoggie Fun Day, scheduled forMay 17 at Cooper River Park. Thisyear will mark the events 17thanniversary.

The major sponsors for theevent are the Shreiber AnimalFoundation Enterprise, and J andJ Snack Foods.

Its a collective effort we tryto do fun things for people andtheir pets, Maria Clarke, theAWA events and business rela-tions manager, said.

The cost for individual racersor walkers is a donation of atleast $40. Teams of at least four to25 people are expected to raise no

less than $500.With more than 1,000 partici-

pants last year, the AWA is hopingfor even more to attend this year,all to raise money and awarenessfor shelter animals.

We have challenged the com-munity to help us raise over$100,000 this year, Clarke said.

According to Clarke, she andother AWA staff members and

volunteers are planning somehuge surprises!

Some popular events at therace are already no secret, includ-ing a super fetch area and ca-nine Candyland.

An area flyball group will bein attendance to expose dog own-ers to the doggie team sport. Fly-ball involves pooches racing,

jumping over hurdles, and catch-ing and retrieving tennis balls.

Police dogs and a high-flyingdisk-fetching group known as the

Jersey Disk Devils will performduring the day.

April 1 will mark the end of an era inVoorhees Town Hall as our municipalclerk, Jeanette Schelberg, retires afterserving our community tirelessly and pas-

sionately for a quarter of a century.Jeanettes service to Voorhees started in1988 when she became the planning boardsecretary. In 1994, she was promoted todeputy clerk, and in 1996 she became ourmunicipal clerk.

Jeanettes organizational skills andwork ethic led our clerks office to operateefficiently, professionally and compassion-ately. Among her many accomplishments,Jeanette implemented the DOC STAR sys-tem, allowing valuable records to be man-aged and permanently preserved.

Jeanette was persistent in pursuing ad-

ditional consumption liquor licenses forVoorhees through the state, creating signif-icant revenue for our community. More re-cently, she helped in the creation and de-sign of the townships updated website andFacebook page.

Jeanette has al-ways been willingto share her vastknowledge and ex-

perience withother departmentswithin town hall, tohelp our local gov-ernment betterserve our resi-dents.

While most peo-ple know JeanetteSchelberg theclerk, few peopleknow JeanetteSchelberg thewoman. She grew

up in Somerdalewhere she attend-ed Sacred Heart School, and then theCathedral Academy. Upon graduation fromhigh school, she spent time in Cuero,Texas, before joining the Navy at the age of

18.She attended basic training at Bain-

bridge, Md., followed by data processingschool in California. Jeanette first served

our country as a data processor for the Bu-reau of Naval Personnel in WashingtonD.C. She was then transferred to the NavalAir Station in Jacksonville, Florida, andwas honorably discharged from the Navyin 1971.

While stationed in Jacksonville,Jeanette met the love of her life, Rick, towhom she has been married for 42 years.She attended Miami Dade Community Col-lege and attained an associate in arts de-gree in 1977.

Jeanette then attended Florida Interna-tional University before moving back to

New Jersey, where she attended nursingschool in Camden. Fortunately forVoorhees, it was during nursing schoolthat Jeanette decided her calling was work-

start of spring. Whether Moth-

er Nature agrees, though, is anyones

guess at this point. Early forecasts

show that she will be good to us, but

how much can we actually rely on

forecasts?Spring is what we all need. We need

a nice stroll downtown, in the park or

on the beach to reinvigorate us, to get

us out of the doldrum into which win-

ter plunged us. Winter this year has

not just affected all of our moods, it

has affected our bottom lines, too.

Well all most likely be paying more

in taxes, in some way, at some level, for

the extensive snow removal, pothole

repairs and salt purchases.

Snow has affected local businessesas well, especially retail shops. Bad

weather kept patrons inside from what

seemed like October through now. The

arrival of spring will hopefully turn

that around, and quickly.

Snow kept our schoolchildren at

home which, at the time, they loved

but it will also keep them in school

much longer into the summer. Whoknows how that will affect summer

travel plans? It looks like June 2014

might be scratched off from summer

altogether.

Snow and biting cold has kept peo-

ple in the mindset of no end in sight,

and has prevented many from taking

day trips to our states wonderful good-

weather spots, or from planning future

trips, as well.In a little more than 60 days, the offi-

cial start of the summer beach season

will be here. Does that even sound

right?

New Jersey relies heavily on

tourism, especially at the Shore dur-

ing the summer. Last summer was

hurt by the aftermath of Hurricane

Sandy. Will this summer be hurt by

more bad weather?

Lets hope not.

In addition to her passion forher family and Voorhees,Jeanette has also been a tirelessadvocate for our veterans and vet-eran affairs. Her service to our

country has given Jeanette aunique perspective in makingsure those who have served aretreated honorably and fairly.

For 25 years, Jeanette Schel-

berg has been the foundation andcornerstone of our Town Hall. Inmy 12 years of service on town-ship committee, and my 10 yearsas mayor, whether in a work ses-sion or a public meeting, I simplyhave to look to my left to seeJeanette to know that all is right.While most people know ofJeanettes efficiency, courtesy andprofessionalism, only a select few

are aware of her compassion, loy-alty and love for her colleagues.

As Jeanettes reign ends, a newera begins, with the promotion ofdeputy clerk Dee Ober to the posi-

tion of clerk. Dee has been fortu-nate to work alongside Jeanettefor many years. A seamless tran-sition is expected by all.

like something we could definite-ly do here, Moore said.

In addition to the previouslymentioned play date activities,the fun-filled day will also includethree brief story times hosted bylibrarians.

Stroller parking and a familybreak room will be available onthe first floor.

Regarding strolling parkingamong other aspects of the BigPlay Date, were prepared for alot of people, Moore said.

The event is free and open toany parents and caregivers in thearea, but registration is required.

If the event is considered a suc-cess, the Voorhees Library staff

will be willing to help other Cam-den County branches have playdates, too, and Voorhees residentswould be able to attend any suchevents.

Another library event will

occur on Saturday, March 22. Thelibrary is offering something newwith Doonya, a fun fitness pro-gram driven by the poundingbeats and rhythms of Bollywoodmusic. The Doonya workshopwill take place at noon. Doonya of-fers an easy-to-follow cardio,strength-building fitness pro-gram, choreographed by instruc-tor Ritu Pandya.

Doonya dancing is not onlyfun, but it gives a total-body work-out as well, according toShyamoli De, the adult services li-brarian who scheduled the pro-gram.

Another special library eventplanned for this spring is a self-defense for women workshop.Karate master Tom Fitzgeraldwill help women ages 16 and uplearn the most basic yet effectiveself-defense techniques. Theevent will take place on May 3, at
