SERVICE TRIPS FOR YEAR 10 AND 11 STUDENTS Projects Abroad is launching a series of two week service programmes aimed specifically at year 10 and 11 students. These trips combine volunteer work with cultural appreciation in small groups, looked after by our dedicated local staff. The programmes will run in Cambodia, India and Fiji over the summer of 2012/13, bringing together students from all over Australia and New Zealand to share in a group experience of personal development, leadership, service, and understanding a very different way of life first hand. Safe, sustainable and worthwhile, these programmes are a journey of discovery for students which will broaden their minds and develop self-confidence. PROJECTS ABROAD Recruiting volunteers from around the world, Projects Abroad operates volunteer programmes in 27 countries. The projects are designed to be safe, sustainable and worthwhile. Supported by our full time local staff, volunteers have a great support network with the opportunity to use their initiative and enjoy a unique constructive, cultural and educational experience. Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 and has supported over 30,000 volunteers in local communities, working on programmes such as teaching, human rights, and healthcare. PRACTICALITIES Students will work on a mixture of educational activities and manual work supporting disadvantaged children. Group sizes will be 12 - 15. Students can travel individually or with friends. The groups are made up of students from many different schools, all of whom will be introduced to eachother before departure. Accommodation will be with host families in Fiji, with two students in each household. The families are carefully chosen and have hosted many volunteers before. In Cambodia and India the students will stay in apartments or guest houses with a housekeeper providing meals and staff always on hand. The group will have a coordinator, one of our full time Projects Abroad local staff. The programmes are well planned and combine volunteer service with cultural appreciation through sight-seeing and activities such as language or cooking lessons. We ask for students to be positive, open-minded and show initiative; there will be challenges, but overcoming them is hugely rewarding. CAMBODIA 9th December – 22nd December 2012

The Care & Community programme in Cambodia combines working with underprivileged children in one of Cambodia’s many orphanages or care centres with some hands-on work within these communities. Volunteers will live and work in the capital city of Phnom Penh or the smaller city of Siem Reap, gateway to the temples of Angkor Wat.The work will involve fun educational activities with the children and your ideas for games, songs, and arts and crafts will be welcomed. Providing some focus and structure

to the day is the aim, making your time there constructive and positive for the children.Volunteers will also work on some renovations and painting, projects to improve the conditions of our partner centres. There is always plenty to do and when a group works hard much can be achieved to brighten up the centre.Cambodia is a fascinating and beautiful country. Part of the programme involves gaining an understanding of the Khmer empire, traditions and also the tragic history of the Khmer Rouge period. The weekend excursion will take place in the temples of Angkor Wat, a breathtaking site of international significance and renown. During the week the volunteers will be able to learn more of the history and culture of this vibrant and welcoming country.

INDIA 13th January – 26th January 2013

Taking part in our Care & Community project in India is a great way to experience firsthand this fascinating country and to be a positive force in other peoples’ lives as well as your own.The project is based in Madurai in southern India, also know as the Temple City, due to its gigantic Meenakshi temple complex. Off the tourist track, Madurai offers a taste of authentic, traditional India. During your two weeks here, you will work in either a local orphanage or school, painting or doing building work

in the mornings and getting the children involved in educational activities and games in the afternoons. Your work will make a valuable and lasting contribution to a placement that would otherwise be unable to afford a new coat of paint or renovation of a room. You will stay in hostel accommodation close to the area where you are working. Evenings are set aside for cultural or leisure activities organised by our local staff. At the weekend we will organise a trip to one of the national parks, allowing volunteers to experience the real beauty of India and enjoy the breathtaking views provided in a country famed for its temples, waterfalls and its scenic natural environment.

FIJI 9th December – 22nd December 2012

Volunteering on a Care project in Fiji is an ideal way to get involved in the local community of this fascinating island nation, while improving conditions for disadvantaged children. Volunteers are based in Nadi on the main island of Viti Levu.Constructive and educational activities are a great way to connect with the children, who will enjoy having you there to bring something new to their daily routine. The children have come to the orphanage from all over the islands and, while well cared for, need and value attention and support.

The orphanage has a number of more practical projects which need completing. Volunteers who take on a building or renovation programme are of great value and will leave something of lasting importance behind. Although two weeks is relatively short, it gives you the opportunity to be a positive force in the children’s lives, as well as broaden your understanding of real life in Fiji while challenging yourself and developing new skills and perspectives.Over the weekend you might sail to one of Fiji’s picture postcard island beaches or take a trip inland to visit a traditional Fijian village.Fijian culture is warm and friendly; your host family and the children at your placement will welcome you to their island home.
