Volunteer Police Cadets Newsletter March 2017 #HantsCadetsAreAwesome Photo Gallery Congratulations to 100 cadets from Hedge End, Portsmouth North, Portsmouth South, Petersfield and Winchester Units who were attested in front of their proud families and volunteer leaders at Portsmouth High School. Cadets were also joined by many guests of honour including HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, High Sheriff Tom Floyd, ACC Snuggs, Deputy Lord Mayor, and Chief Specials Officer Haye to celebrate their attestation and recognise their valuable contribution to the Constabulary and community. Attestation Celebrations, 22nd March Winchester Unit HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Portsmouth North Unit Petersfield Unit Portsmouth South Unit Hedge End Unit Marlands Training Exercise, 19th February Over 50 cadets and 40 adult volunteers took part in a six hour training event at The Marlands Shopping Centre in Southampton. Cadetsskills and knowledge were put to the test in various activities including first aid scenarios, public order and crime reports. Cadets from Winchester Unit did a great job as role players and the cadets taking part from Cantell, Redbridge, and Basingstoke Units all did exceptionally well. A big thank you to Staff Prutz, Staff Binks and Staff Burns for organising such a successful exercise and to The Marlands for allowing us to use their premises. Havant & Gosport Unit Awards, 23rd March Havant and Gosport held a joint awards evening to celebrate 15 new cadets being attested, and six cadets being promoted into senior ranks. The event was also the first to present cadets with their Hampshire Constabulary Volunteer Police Cadet Awards. Four cadets achieved their Silver Award (having completed 150 hours of volunteering), 12 were awarded their Bronze Award (for 75 hours of volunteering) and 24 cadets received their Probation Award (for 36 hours). Congratulations as well to the cadets who received their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Gosport Unit attended the Safer Gosport Communities Day on 18th March and were kept busy providing free security markings on bikes to help prevent thefts. They also gave out valuable crime prevention advice to local residents and visitors and delivered Cyber Crime Awareness sessions in the library. Over in Southampton cadets from Cantell and Redbridge Units visited the Basset area with the local Neighbourhood Policing team to give out burglary prevention advice. Cadets from Southsea got their first taste of volunteering by taking to the streets of Portsmouth as part of the Stop the Traffik campaign and helped distribute over 900 leaflets on recognising the signs of human trafficking. Havant cadets were busy raising funds for their Unit by bag packing at their local Tesco for an impressive 6 hours. On Sunday 19th March Aldershot cadets were engaging with the community by signing local residents up to Hampshire Alerts, making sure they were aware of crime in their area. Cadets were a credit to the force speaking with residents and visiting close to 1000 households to raise awareness of burglary prevention tactics. Cadets took part in a plain clothes operation where they conducted test purchasing of knives in Southampton. In June 2016 when they first took part in test purchasing 80% of the shops targeted sold a knife to an under 18 year old. On the second operation in November 60% of shops sold knives to them. However in February 2017 after the cadet s efforts only 12% of shops targeted failed. The hard work put in by the cadets has resulted in a huge step towards making Southampton safer. Both events were enjoyed by leaders and cadets, with those taking part in the New Forest showing their determination to continue their practice walk despite the additional challenge of snow!
