My Father’s Life and Legacy
This coming March 6, my father would have turned 100.
It is my pleasure to invite you to Shabbat services on Saturday,
March 3, when I will display some of the rare Jewish and
secular books from his collection (and some that I have added
during my own years of bibliophilia.) I will also welcome the
opportunity to tell you a bit about David Hirsch Panitz.
Since he passed away a year and a half before I arrived
in Norfolk, you did not have the opportunity to meet him—except for a few members of
our congregation who remember him from weddings you attended at Adas Israel
congregation in Washington, D.C., where he served as rabbi from 1951-1959.
He was born of immigrant and Zionist parents, in Baltimore. When he was a
little boy, his father, Ezekiel, and mother, Nettie, attempted to make aliyah, so my father
began his education in Eretz Yisrael. They were not able to succeed economically, so
they returned to Baltimore and to the corner grocery store business. Wiped out by the
Great Depression, my father’s father took to kosher poultry slaughtering. Hard work and
long hours were therefore part of my father’s basic upbringing. Every Thursday night, he
and his father would work through the night, “chicken flicking”, preparing the poultry for
the reception that would take place that coming weekend at the Lord Baltimore Hotel.
My Dad’s first academic love was archaeology, and he wanted to go into that
career professionally. His mentor, the great Biblical Archaeologist, William Foxwell
Albright, counseled him that, as a Jew, he would not get the necessary permits from Arab
governments to conduct digs in Arab countries. He turned to the rabbinate as a strong
second choice, and then made his name as one of the leading Conservative rabbis of his
generation.
I’ll also share the story of how he met my mother. His initial attempt to impress
her failed miserably, although obviously, perseverance paid off… They were married in
June, 1942, and enjoyed 48 ½ years of married life together.
He cared about the causes of the day dear to progressive American Jews: racial
integration and social justice in America, Zionism and the welfare of the State of Israel.
He was active in the leadership circles of the Rabbinical Assembly (I wish I could ask
him if he knew our own Rabbi Joseph Goldman?—the chances are high, because there
were not so many rabbis in our movement back then, and they all went to the Concord
Hotel for the annual convention.)
My father represented the forward thinking of his generation, which was not in
the same place as my own. While he expanded pulpit opportunities for women, his
congregation remained non-egalitarian into the 1980’s, whereas my own moved to full
equality of synagogue standing for men and women. I also recall disagreeing with him
about whether a blind student ought to be accepted into rabbinical school. But despite
some areas of seeing things from a different generational perspective, I have always
celebrated the broad areas of shared vision that characterize our world view. I have
inherited many blessings from him, and I plan to voice them with gratitude. I hope you
can join me!
Shalom,
Rabbi Michael Panitz
P.S. If you enjoy this program, then we will do something similar in four years,
for my mother’s 100
th
birth anniversary…
A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Friendship
I began thinking of what to write for this column while lying awake in bed
on a morning when I couldn't sleep . . . we've all been there. Anyhow, here
goes.
Many of us are on Facebook with so many "friends." I wonder why it is that we spend so much
energy on Facebook, where we're asked to befriend people we hardly know or don't know at all!
This got me thinking about our congregation. We have an opportunity to create real face to face,
not just facebook --- friends. At shul, we see the same people with a fair degree of frequency
who can become real friends leading to a more cohesive congregation. This year our Men's Club
has gotten back on it's feet! We are planning many activities and face to face friendships are
developing!
And so, I want to address myself to those of you who don't often come to Shabbat services and
schmooze at the kiddush luncheon. It's you that I want to draw back into our worship service and
hopefully face to face friendships with your fellow congregants. I look forward to greeting you
at an upcoming Shabbat service.
I am very excited about Temple Israel’s spring fundraiser, Thanks for the Memories, to be held on
Sunday, April 29th. This theme is honoring the founding families and the important role they
played in the genesis of our Temple Israel congregation and this, our building, which is 65 years
old this year. We will also be honoring Rabbi Michael and Shelia Panitz for their 25 years of
service in our Temple family.
The evening will feature nostalgia from the past coupled with delicious food and dancing to the
sounds of one of the areas greatest bands, The Hotcakes. There will be a running slide show of
photos and old documents from the early years and recognition of the founding families and the
Panitz family. There will be something for everyone! The spring fundraiser is a crucial
component of the synagogue’s operating budget. Your support allows us to continue operating
self-sufficiently and debt-free 365 days a year. It’s sure to be a fun evening. Please save the date
and plan to join us!
See you in shul,
Jonathan S. Longman

WHERE DID THE MINYAN MONEY
GO THIS MONTH?
The Minyanaires contributed money
in January to:
TORAH AT THE BEACH
SECOND MONDAY of each month at 7:30 pm.
It still amazes me how nice an evening of Torah at the Beach can be for everyone attending. February’s study session was full
of information from Rabbi Panitz and participation from all there. It’s such a special way of learning!
This month we will meet on Monday, March 12, 2018 at 7:30 PM at the home of Jonathan and Linda Longman. We will
begin a three session topic of Yiddish fiction. Do you have any favorite Jewish authors? I remember going to the library and
taking out books by Sholem Aleichem for my grandfather. Rabbi will talk about fiction from Isaac Bashevis and many others. It
should prove to be an interesting study line. Why don’t you join us!

LEARNING TOGETHER
Every year, our congregation and our programming
partner, Kempsville Conservative Synagogue “K.B.H.”
jointly sponsor an adult education series at KBH (952
Indian Lakes Blvd, Virginia Beach).
This year, our series is entitled, “Torah Teachings
about Men and Women”at 7:30 PM on three successive
Tuesday nights: April 10, April 17 and April 24. The
format is a presentation by our rabbi, followed by a
spirited question and answer session.
April 10—Torah Stories about Men and Women. Why
does the Torah present stories about dysfunctional
marriages? What lessons about the ideal marriage are
implicit in these narratives?
April 17-- Torah Laws about relations between men
and women. What are the commandments regarding this
chapter of human relations? Is the Ultra-Orthodox
approach to modesty the teaching of Torah, or the
influence of the human cultures through which that group
has passed? Conversely, is the informality of current
western relations a challenge to Torah observance? Is
there a kosher but non-fundamentalist sexual ethic?
April 24-- Torah and Sexual Orientation. The Torah
calls certain homosexual acts “an abomination” (and
certain heterosexual acts, as well). Does this relate to
contemporary gender reality, or to the culture of
homosexual rape that characterized much of the ancient
world? How are we to interpret those verses today?

LET’S CONTINUE to HELP PUERTO RICO
Dear Congregation,
We wanted to share this update with you regarding the continuing needs in Puerto Rico.
Your generous donations of batteries, flashlights, tarps and insect repellent helped provide light, shelter, and
relief from mosquitoes which transmit the Zika virus. Because of this outbreak, death came to many of our
fellow Americans, especially in the rural areas in Puerto Rico, and many continue to become ill because of the
lack of sanitary conditions.
By helping to provide these essential items, it is truly a way, I believe, to perform a Mitzvah and Tikum Olam,
by giving and at the same time helping to repair a little part of our world and the lives of those who are so
devastated by the hurricane.
There is still an extreme need for many items, especially light because electricity has not yet been restored in
some of the areas. Even though the need for insect repellent continues, solar lighting is also a much
needed item.
Please plan to come to our March 10 Second Saturday Shabbat and meet the ladies from the Lynnhaven Dive
Center to hear of their personal experiences and sacrifices involved in going to Puerto Rico to personally
deliver all the donated items. Their stories of how they travelled to deliver these items, and where they slept in
the devastated areas are compelling. You will truly feel that your heart-felt donation helped bring some
comfort to those suffering.
Please let's go another round in aiding these ladies to deliver supplies to Puerto Rico. Let's bring the following to
the Temple office by March 9:
• Solar lighting -- (outdoor path lights will charge and can be brought inside at night to provide light)
• Insect Repellent-- still great need
Please feel free to contact us with any questions, and look forward to sharing this inspiring March 10 Second
Saturday Shabbat with you. David and Marilyn Suskind-Pearline
This evening will feature nostalgia from the past coupled with delicious food and dancing to the sounds of one of
the area’s greatest bands, The Hotcakes. There will be a running slide show of photos and old documents from
the early years and recognition of the founding families, as well as, honoring Rabbi Michael and Sheila Panitz
for their 25 years of service in our Temple Israel family.
The event begins at 6:00 pm with wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres on the Evelyn Eisenberg Atrium followed by
dinner in Brody Auditorium. Tickets are just $65 each.
Sponsorships are greatly needed because this is the main fundraising event at Temple Israel, and proceeds help
us cover the costs of operating 365 days a year. Your support allows us to continue operating self-sufficiently
and debt-free.

MITZVAH OF THE MONTH
MARCH
We are Men, At Your Service!
Our Temple Israel Men’s Club is planning a series of programs for the Spring to highlight its role as a service
organization. Please save the following dates and plan to take part in these programs:
Shabbat, March 3 -- The Men’s Club will hold its annual “Men’s Club Sabbath” and support the congregation’s
public worship. Men will be leading many of the prayers in that morning service, beginning at 9:30 AM, and the
Men’s Club will sponsor the Kiddush luncheon after the conclusion of services at noon.
Shabbat, April 7-- Commemorating the Holocaust. The Men’s Club will again support our Shabbat morning
program of worship, this time in a Sabbath dedicated to memorializing the victims of the Holocaust. We will have
a guest speaker at services to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing us as we attempt to educate the
younger generation about the Holocaust. The Men’s Club will distribute special yellow memorial candles to
everyone who attends the service. These candles are to be lit on Wednesday night, April 11, on Yom Ha-Shoah
itself.
Sunday, May 13—Treat a Mom on Mother’s Day. In our day and age, families often live in separate states, and
some of our mothers have no children living locally. The Men’s Club wants to make sure that none of our
congregation’s moms are without an escort for a celebratory brunch or lunch. CALLING ALL AREA MOMS: If
you do not have family plans for Mother’s Day, and you would like to go out to a restaurant to celebrate you on
Mother’s Day, call the synagogue office, and the Men’s Club will make arrangements to take you out. Our treat!
And we will handle all the transportation.
Sunday, June 10 -- A Family Outing The Men’s Club will assist the younger families of our congregation (and
all those who are young at heart), by underwriting the costs associated with a bicycle tour of the Yorktown
battlefield. We plan to rent a van to transport your bicycle up to the battlefield. Our own member, Nathan Brauner,
who knows that site well, will be our docent for the program. Family togetherness, healthy, fresh air fun, and a
history lesson, all in one!
March 10 Second Saturday Shabbat
